Hello, I thought I would make a list, with sources, for some CAMPBELL men who were located in Colonial Virginia, USA, in 1600-1700's time frame. Not all the men located in Virginia in 1750, for example, named Campbell are related, some might be related, some may not. I wish we had a LIST of every Campbell man in Virginia up to 1750, but that is probably not yet available. It would be a very handy tool! #1. My ancestor is George Campbell born about 1720, originally in Albemarle Co VA, and was located in Amherst Co later, where he died in 1791. Thanks to Steven Campbell, I know now that his land which is today called Nelson Co VA, was 300 acres, and he bought it in 1-16-1760. He would have been 40 years old at that point in time. 4 years later he bought another 110 acres, and 5 years later another 162 acres, which was on both sides of the Piney River, which means that land is today considered half in Amherst Co and half in Nelson Co, because the Piney River is the dividing line between the 2 counties. This is the reason that I have focused my research on Amherst Co VA and Nelson Co VA, as many of the descendants of George Campbell and his wife Caty remained in that area, but some did in fact move elsewhere. My own Campbell ancestors remained in Amherst Co VA until 1882, but left behind a large group of relatives who never left the ancestral area of our Campbell line. Now add 300 acres, to 110 acres, to 162 acres, this equals= 472 acres of land. This is the land that he died and left to his children, but not in an equal distribution, which prompted a legal dispute among his children and heirs. The son of George and Caty Campbell, named John Campbell, m. Frances, had the personal goal to re-consolidate his father's original land holdings, and become sole owner of the original family estate. He accomplished this goal, but had to "BUY-OUT" his siblings and co-heirs through court recorded documents. These documents establish the identity of the children of George and Caty Campbell, they had 13 children, of which 9 were SONS. My ancestry comes from 2 of those sons, and possibly 3 of those sons, (I have one ancestor named George T. Campbell b. 1824 d. 1856 who is a mystery). My personal nichname for my ancestor John Campbell, s/o George and Caty, is "Buy-Out John". According to the "Childs-Chiles Family History, by Mary C. Chiles this same George Campbell was the son of Charles Campbell b. 1693 Ireland d. 1749 Ireland. According to this family history, George was the only son noted for Charles. Steven Campbell is trying to find the SOURCE of this family story to prove or disprove this legend. Steven Campbell is also likewise a descendant of George and Caty Campbell. Can anyone shed light on this story, the author, or Marilyn Thrush Petty's email or regular mailing address? Thanks to fellow researcher Beth Craig, she found some early Campbell men noted in Augusta Co VA. This is important to my own research, because Augusta Co., VA is right next door to Nelson and Amherst Co VA. It has been proven that some Campbell men of Augusta, did have descendants in Amherst-Nelson area. #2. Robert Campbell, s/o Duncan of Scotland, went to Ireland in 1700, and then to Virginia about 1730. He is buying land in Augusta Co VA in 1745, then again he is noted there in 1750. #3. John Campbell b. 1674, m. Grace Hay, they are in Augusta Co., VA. He immigrated 1726 from Ireland, married Grace Hay, they were in Augusta Co VA, but many of their descendants did not stay in the area, but moved to SouthWest Virginia by 1750. This Campbell line is refered to as "The WHITE David Campbell line", which refers to hair color, not skin color. There is alot on the internet about this line, and I have NOT researched it at all, because I never could see any connection to my line, so I left it alone. This "John and Grace" group has matched to alot of the Campbell DNA test results. #4. Andrew Campbell, bought land in 1748 at Staunton, Augusta Co VA. Best regards, Lilly Martin
