    1. RE: John J Campbell

    3. Sometimes being an "expert" does not matter. Once, when I was volunteering at a FHC, a lady was there discussing this very thing with a new patron. She said she was viewing films & had her 9 year old grandson along. She allowed him to "help"..gave him a film and said find any persons by this name.. And we are looking for his birth around this year... Awhile later the grandson said "Gramma, I found one.. What does d-e-c-'-d i-n-f mean"? Sure enough, the man she had as her oldest ancestor had died an infant! 30 years of research gone in one sentence. She is the one who told me to NEVER say NEVER.. Don't let a state, county, or the spelling of a name stop your research. We see this all the time now that census records are so available...census takers made mistakes, all humans make mistakes. This Hugh and Mariah are back in Darlington SC in 1880. They are on page 36, and John is on page 25 (or vice versa, it was early when I checked the census). 10 pages, and a couple townships away..but then again people did not stay in one place back then. It could be they didn't move & boundary lines changed, but more than likely, they moved. Remember new lands were opening up for very little cost, one just had to have the guts to make the journey. Look at my recent line (me & hubby growing up): 1946 - Wayne Kirk born in Grass Valley, CA 1946 - Jo Weaver born in Joplin, Mo (my oldest's mom in law) 1949 - Lonnie Campbell Sr born in Bismark, MO (my hubby) 1952 - Margie Buren born in Los Angeles, CA (me) 1956 - Jo Weaver moves to EAST Vine Street in LODI, CA 1956 - Margie Buren moves to WEST Vine Street in LODI, CA 1960 - Margie Buren moves to Stockton, CA 1962 - Margie Buren moves to Clover Lane in Stockton, CA 1964 - Lonnie Campbell Sr moves to Clover Lane in Stockton, CA 1967 - Margie Buren is in La Puente, CA - Lonnie visits on weekends (yes we were young) 1968 - Thomas Eugene Kirk born in Grass Valley, CA 1969 - Corinna Campbell b in French Camp, CA (Stockton) 1979 - Margie & Lonnie move to Spanaway, WA 1979 - Tommy Kirk moves to Parkland, WA to live with his mom & her new husband. Note: Parkland and Spanaway are adjoining suburbs of Tacoma, WA 1984 - Someone sets up a blind date for Corinna's Jr Prom...it's Tommy Kirk 1989 - Lonnie & Margie move back to Stockton, CA 1993 - Lonnie and Margie move to Lodi, CA 2004 - Lonnie and Margie return to their Stockton home. 2005 - Lonnie and Margie move to Galt, CA even though they bought a farm in Littlefield, TX Now, Lonnie & Margie have two other children... Connie & Lonnie Jr (no not twins) In 1989 Connie becomes Connie Curette, lived in the Tacoma WA area (several places). They have Keri in Tacoma WA In 1992 she is in Stockton with us, has baby Kevin in Stockton, CA..hubby in Ft. Leonardwood, MO (service) 1993 they are in Tacoma again In 2000 she becomes Connie West, lives in Spanaway, WA & has son Bobby West there. In 2002 she Robert & Bobby are in Lodi CA with us In 2003 she is in Winton, OR and has baby Emali - Keri & Kevin are in Tacoma with their dad. In 2004 she is now Connie Yanz and living in Myrtle Creek, OR & has all her children with her. Lonnie Jr went to college in Miramar (San Diego) CA in 1990 lived there about a year In 1992 Lonnie was in Stockton with us. In 1993 he lived in Stockton by himself (we moved to Lodi) Late 1998 he moved home again... Oh and brought his future wife. In 2002 he married Monique & they moved to Sacramento, CA .. Where they are at present. Now, in 100 years, is one of our descendant's going to be able to place us as a family unit? Probably, as I am leaving a good trail... But had I not done our family tree... They could easily miss the connections. Oh.. Forgot for six months in 2003, Tommy & Corinna Kirk lived with us in Lodi, CA... About 1/2 mile from where me and Tommy's mom lived in 1956-58! Another reason to NEVER say NEVER: I was contacted by a lady several years ago.. She was looking for James Freman Campbell, born 1916 in MO & I had the only one she could find online. Could he have been in San Francisco in 1945-6 working in films & in the service? I asked my mother in law.. She said she had never met Freman & that he died in 1949, having never left MO. Pretty cut and dry, so I told the lady no, not possible. She contacted me by email & mail several times.. I finally decided to let Aunt Myrtle (James Freman's sister) tell this lady NO... Forwarded the email to Aunt Myrtle.. Not ten minutes later.. Myrtle calls... HOW DID I FIND THIS LADY? Myrtle and her siblings had looked for decades for Carol! Seems Freman (James Freman went by Freman) was father to many children.. And this lady was one of those children! Freman was in SF, was in the service, and lastly my Mom in law new Freman well enough that he may actually be my husbands biological father, not his brother Russell. So... Do your own research, and come to your own conclusions, and until someone can show documentation otherwise, go with the paper trail you have. My gut feeling is Hugh is your John's dad. Seems Carol may be my husband's sister.. Oh, and we can't forget Donna...Russell's girl born shortly before Lonnie & Bonnie...while Russell was married to Rebecca.. Another sister for Lonnie Sr. At least it was kept in the family for the most part & Lon is still part of the same Campbell line... Or did his gramma have a milkman or two? He assured me that this John and Hugh was not my John as other people had done research on them and had proved who "John of Hugh" was. However he never offered or would show me the research. For a long time now I have wondered about that, especially the fact that they were not in the census in 1860. Could they have gone back to NC and then only John came back to SC to marry? John was a ripe age for service in the War of the Northern Aggression, but the only John J from SC was the one in Marion Co, and I know that is not the right family as it is quite documented. However, I have never checked one from NC. I guess that one of these days I may have to apply the old "Duck Adage": If it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck, then most likely it "is" a Duck. The probably is my John J Campbell. However, Horace Rudisill told me that this John had a different middle name, but would never tell me what it was. I will ask about it on the list and see if I can get any bites. Old Horace was a great documentarian and historian. He had everything filed away by his system and he horded it well. I have not been since he has died. I need to do that and let the new person help me. Thanks again for your help. You are special.
