Hi All! I am really enjoying the many discussions. While I have also been successfull in many branches of my family tree, I've hit a deadend with my Campbells. Maybe someone has run across this Canadian bunch. My GGGrandfather- Burton Curtis Campbell- b.1864 Ontario,Canada m. May 28,1883 to Sarah Jane Dicey Bay City, MI. He deserted his family for a teacher from his school (he was a principal). We think they married and moved to the Jackson, MI area, but have found nothing. GGGGrandfather- William John Campbell- b. 1838 Canada m. Mary Elizabeth O'Kelly d. May 31,1869 Elkland,Tuscola Co.,MI GGGGGrandfather- Abraham Campbell- m. Havannah ? Canada? Scotland? Any help with either Burton's whereabouts at death, or Abraham's origins would be GREATLY appreciated!! Lynn Heckerthorn
Hi Lynn, Well, I think the law caught up with Burton for deserting his family! I just searched the 1900 census and found Burton C. Campbell in the State House of Correction and Reformatory in Easton Twp, Ionia Co, MI. Here are the details: (Remember that census details can be incorrect!) Campbell, Burton C., white, male, born Dec 1865, age 34, married for 17 years, born in Canada, father born in Scotland, mother born in Canada, immigrated in 1869 and is naturalized, occupation - schoolteacher, can read, write and speak English Sarah Jane Campbell and her 4 children are living at 702 North Catherine St (there are 2 other families living at the same address) in West Bay City, Bay Co, MI in the 1900 census. Campbell, Sarah J., head of family, white, female, born Apr 1862, age 38, married for 17 years, has had 5 children, four are living, she was born in Michigan, her father was born in New York, her mother was born in Michigan, she does house work, can read, write and speak English. Campbell, Sarah E., daughter, white, female, born July 1884, age 15, single, born in Michigan, Father born in Canada, mother born in Michigan. Campbell, Edwinna A., daughter, white, female, born Mar 1886, age 14, single, born in MI, Father in Canada, Mother in MI. Campbell, William B., son, white, male, born Apr 1889, age 11, single, born in MI, father in Canada, mother in MI. Campbell, Florence A., daughter, white, female, born Feb 1891, age 9, single, born in MI, father in Canada, mother in MI. I found Burton's father's death just as you noted: Campbell, William, age 30, male, white, married, born in Canada, died June 1969 in Elkland, Tuscola Co, MI. He was a teacher and he died of heart disease. His widow Elizabeth and two children Burton and Emeline are living in Elkland in the 1870 census. Beside them are living an O'Kelley family! In the 1880 census in Almer, Tuscola Co, MI, I found Mary Elizabeth, Burton's mother, remarried to Daniel McCrea and Emeline is called Emma Campbell, step-daughter. I can just imagine poor Burton not getting on with his step-father and running away. Can't find Burton anywhere in 1880. Hope this helps.
