I really try to stay away form these discussions but I feel compelled to share my information. My Great Grandfather was John Wesley Campbell, born in Ills. and living near Grand Junction Colorado by 1895. I have a letter that he wrote before 1910 where he stated that it had been snowing for several days and he had been worrying about the Indian families as he had not been able to check on them for several days. I know that my Grandfather, Henry Campbell, and son of John Wesley, married my Grandmother in Colburn Colorado in 1908. My Grandmother was a nurse and she was hired by the state of Colorado to take care of the Indian children that attended school there. Several of these children lived at the school all year long. Our family gave food and money as they could to the Indian School. This school is still in operation or was a few years ago. When I was small (several years ago) I remember my Grandfather talking about the Indians coming over and helping out with chores. I certainly never heard them called slaves. They were in need of food and starving and the folks that could helped them out with sharing what they had and the Indians in turn would come over and do work for the ones that were helping them.
