William George Campbell Taken from the Nelson Co. Heritage Book (middle name may have been George) Campbell, b. Cr. 1754 in Albermarle Co., VA. And d. 4/16/1836 in Nelson Co. was tobacco farmer and a partner in the warehouse business. He married Sarah "Salley" Goode, daughter of Daniel Goode 12/22/1785 in Amherst Co., VA. Fought in the Rev War (America). He is not mentioned in his Father's Will, but his older brother John Campbell does identify him as a brother, so this serves to establish his identity as a son of George Campbell and Catherine, one of 13 children, in Amherst Co VA. James Thompson was witness. She was the daughter of James S.Thompson, Jr. and Elizabeth Stevens. [4] "Mary P. Campbell, wife of Washington Campbel, died 8/15/1871" (per [18} family Bible). His second m. was to C. J. "Mate" Funkhouser 11/6/1874 after Polly's death. It is said Washington was a controlling person. He locked the sewing supplies in his trunk and if they were needed Polly had to ask. He was supposedly the High Sheriff or tax assessor of Nelson Co. Mate manipulated him into making a settlement on her before their marriage. Daniel, his son, said the only thing he got from the estate was a mule. 1840 Nelson Co., VA census 1 male 5-10, male 20 to 30, 1 male 30 to 40 and 2 females under 5, 2 females 5 to 10 and 1 female 30 to 40. 1850 Nelson Co. Census: Washington Campbell, age 40, a farmer, Mary,Wife, is 41, Elizabeth 18, Sarah 16, Thomas 14, Phoebe 11, Martin 8, Daniel 5 and Abraham 1. 1860 Nelson Co. Census, Washington Campbell, 50 and wife , 52, Thomas 23, Martin V. 18, Daniel 15, Abraham 11. 1870 Nelson Co. Census Washington is 60 a farmer, Mary 62, Abraham 21, Elizabeth Long 39, Fayette 10, Benjamin Camden 14 and Mary E. Campbell 2. Campbell b. 7-1-1831, d. 7-31-1908 buried in the Tommie Kidd Campbell Cemetery at Lowesville. She was Mary Jane Thompson, daughter of James and Elizabeth V. (Harvie) Thompson III and they were married 6/9/1857. Mary Jane was his first cousin. [4] On the 1860 Amh. Co. Census George W. Campbell is 26 and wife, Mary J. is 26. Only 2 children listed; ie., Charles B., age 2 and Gus M. 5/12 mo. On the 1880 Amh. Census George W. is 46, Mary J. is 48. Sons James W. 18, Geo. W. 17, Wm. T., 14 and Granville is 7. On the 1910 Amh. Co. Census, Temp Dist, is George W. Campbell, Sr. in house #174 (next to son #173 George, Jr. in #174) He is 74, married 24 years and a widow. Fletcher's parents were Thomas Massie b. cr. 1787, d. cr. 1870, m. 11/3/1823 (the son of John and Susannah (Wright) Massie) and Nancy Maddox. (Nancy Maddox's was b. cr. 1800 to John and Betsy (Campbell)Maddox and d. 3/1880. Mary's parents were Archibald and Elizabeth (Wright) Baird. George W. Campbell b. 12-27-1861 (listed on tombstone and 10-27-1861 from a 2nd source; d. 5-15-1949 and a Lola M. Campbell b. 10-18-1868, d. 5-25-1942 buried in the Tommie Kidd Campbell Cemetery on Rt. .. near Lokey Massie. 1910 Amh. Co. Census of Temp. Dists. lists George W. Campbell, Jr. age 48, married 24 years. Wife is 41 with 13 of 13 children living. They lived in a house that was up in the Crawley's Creek area, on property now owned by Dick Fleming family. Kate Rozelle (Wood) Campbell. She was the daughter of O.B. and Ella R. Wood and was 21 when she married William; she was b. 3/17/1899. Per MR 4:180 dated 7/14/1919, Amh. Co. W.C. died in WWI. This is the Bill Campbell that owned the Woodson Hotel and lands of which the Bee Tree Lumber Company was located at Woodson. The Bill Campbell house is the only house left (where Julie Rose now lives, 1996) from that lumber yard standing down in the field from the shell of the Woodson Hotel with Mr. Page Tyree running the post office so the saying was "Campbell town and Tyree Street and Bill Campbell's Hotel and nothing to eat."
