Lilly, AT and other researchers, I have something to throw out there. My great-aunt Florrie Campbell who wrote a family history (although I have found mistakes) included the statements that I will include and I would like you opinion. 1. She stated that three Campbell brothers came to the America, one was Thomas who settled in Bedford Co., VA William who settled in Nelson Co., VA and the third she didn't know his name settled in King George Co., VA. 2. She also stated that Washington Campbell only had one sister, Betty who in her later life lived with Washington's son Martin. 3. She also said that Washington's father was Thomas (which turned out not to be so). She also said that Thomas (Washington's father) had a nephew who was named Thomas who was a "preacher" and a brother Judge J.B. Campbell. I am just throwing this out there to see what the rest of you think. I don't post often, I do read your post but due to other forces in my life I don't take the time to post a reply. I follow your post with much interest. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
Did your Aunt Florrie have any Campbells of the 1600s in her family history? ----- Original Message ----- From: <noliver3600@comcast.net> To: <CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 04, 2006 4:02 PM Subject: [CAMPBELL] CAMPBELL's from Nelson, Amherst, Albemarle > Lilly, AT and other researchers, I have something to throw out there. Dear Nancy and all other related to George and Caty Campbell, I feel that your Aunt Florrie was truely trying to put down on paper what she felt, or what she perceived to be the truth. But I don't believe her story is correct in all points. In fact you stated that you have found faults to her story. That is OK, my family has a manuscript written in 1868, on file at the New York Public Library, Manuscripts Division, and it took me only 3 years of research to prove it was all wrong, and I was really hoping it was true. What this tells me, is that the old folks years ago did not know their own family lines any better than we all do today. They just lived and tried to remember their closest folks and kin, but once people start dying off, the old connections fall away, and stuff is just plain forgot. Here are my comments: 1. As to the story of 3 brothers to America, we don't know yet, but from the DNA test results on the line of George and Caty Campbell of Amherst Co VA, it appears a very good chance that George was born in America, and was not the Immigrant ancestor. Concerning Bedford Co, VA there was certainly plenty of Campbell families in that location, my mind goes to Moses Campbell who was in Bedford Co as of 1789. Moses Campbell was in Amherst Co VA prior to moving to Bedford Co VA. 2. Washington Campbell had 2 sisters, not one, according to the official document, which was the Revolutionary War Pension file of William Campbell, it states he had a daughter named Nancy Campbell b. 12-25-1788, according to Deb Tower this Nancy married a Mr. HITE. Perhaps they moved away, and this is why Aunt Florrie was not familiar with her? The other sister of Washington Campbell was Elizabeth Campbell, and perhaps she never married, and perhaps in her elderly years she lived with her nephew, that makes sence. We could look on the census report for Martin Campbell and see if she might be listed? 3. The father of Washington Campbell b. 1810, was William Campbell b. 1754 Albemarle Co VA, the son of George Campbell b. about 1720, and he was married to Caty, and they owned a 460 acres farm which at the time was Amherst Co, but later became both Amherst Co and Nelson Co, because this farm sat on both sides of the Piney River, and in 1808 when Nelson Co was formed, the Piney River was the boundary line spliting Nelson Co from Amherst Co.VA The name THOMAS was not used very much by the descendants of George and Caty Campbell. I have gone thru all my files and found these names which are Thomas, and I have listed them here. If anyone thinks they might have been a PREACHER, can you please reply with that info, so we will know whether the story Aunt Florrie remembered is true or false. 1. Thomas Cary Campbell b. 1854, s/o Joshua, s/o Lawson, s/o William, s/o George and Caty. 2. Thomas J. Campbell b. 1837, s/o Washington, s/o William, s/o George and Caty. 3. Thomas J. Campbell b. 1832, s/o Henry, s/o William, s/o George and Caty. 4. Thomas G. Campbell b. 1826, s/o Cary, s/o George, s/o George, s/o George and Caty. As you can see, 3 of the 4 go back to William Campbell, s/o George and Caty. It looks like Thomas might have been a name which William Campbell's line liked. Concerning the JUDGE Campbell, I have found a B. B. Campbell b. 1847, listed in the 1880 census at Sandiges, VA, married to Lucilla, with kids: Leonidas b. 1875, and Nelley b. 1880. This man was said to be a JUDGE. I do NOT know his ancestry, or if the 1880 census might have spelled his initials wrongly? Does anyone recognise this man?
