Hello Buck and other researchers: On the question of where the Amherst Campbell's originated, you have listed a couple of them that I have some information on. Neill Campbell: He never married, but had one "natural" daughter who inherited, and he also named a sister's children in his will. Her name was Catherine Brugh of East Mill near Perth, North Britain. This may or may not be where Neill came from. Lawrence Campbell: In his papers from the Library of Virginia, there is one with a transcription from "History of Caroline County" by Marshall Wingfield (pg. 395) Lawrence's family, or at least Lawrence, owned land and married his wife Henrietta Catlett in Caroline Co., VA before moving to Amherst Co., VA. The reprint is about the Campbells of Argylshire, so one may make the assumption that that was originally the ancestral home.....if the account is in fact true. It's a little lengthy to reprint here, but the last two paragraphs are: "He (a descendant of the Duke of Argyle) took up his residence in France & was there many years before he was permitted to return to Scotland. While in France one of his sons fought a duel with a Frenchman & killing his antagonist was compelled to flee the country. England being closed to him, he came to the Colony of Virginia arriving at Jamestown about 1650. He married & removed from Jamestown to a settlement in Accomack, thence recrossed the bay to Gloucester where he died. His family later came to King & Queen and of this family one son, James, came to Caroline and established himself at Poplar Grove near Golansville. Later the Caroline family acquired Aspen Hill near Milford now owned by Mr. & Mrs. John Henderson and are now strongly established in both Caroline & Hanover counties. (1924)" The only thing I am certain of is that Neill Campbell had a sister named Catherine Brugh who lived in East Mill near Perth North Britain (Scotland). Phyllis in CA
