    1. Help finding George T-son of Andrew Campbell - and a short research lesson
    2. Margie Campbell
    3. Lorene, what records have you checked? I think I did a little snooping and came up with what you have. Which Campbell are you seeking more information on? George T, or Andrew? Did George T or Andrew first marry Tava Rose? What kind of information are you seeking? And the Campbell lines have been well researched, we just have not found all the answers..yet. Here are some clues: McCreary county Kentucky formed in 1912 from Wayne, Pulaski & Whitley counties in KY. This tells us George T was NOT born in McCreary county KY. Let's see if we can find which of the other counties you can look to: You may be in luck... Next earliest change in boundaries that may affect your research is: 1825- Laurel from Whitley, Clay, Knox, Rockcastle (org 1826). I give these because they are close to the border of the three counties McCreary formed from, and there is a slight chance that Laurel may have been in a part of Wayn county that one of your ancestors lived in. So, for the most part, you have three counties in question... Now let's see if we can't locate when these parent counties came into being: 1780, the area you want is in newly formed Lincoln county KY 1792, add Green county, which formed from Lincoln co KY 1798, add Cumberland and Pulaski county which formed from Green & Lincoln 1799, add Knox, which formed from Lincoln 1800, add Wayne, which formed from Pulaski & Cumberland 1818, add Whitley, which formed from Knox Note that the above formations were the UNORGANIZED formations, so they would be considered as becoming counties officially, usually one year later. Guess they needed time to form governments. Genealogical research is not just looking for a name in a certain county.. It is comprised of many of the things we were taught the basics of in school..geography, history, math, and some basic research skills (remember trying to look up a word in the dictionary, when you had no clue as to how it was spelled? That was to teach us basic research, with a bit of patience added in). Ok.. We know that George T was probably born in one of these three counties...but which? Well, only one George T in any of our counties in 1900.. Whitley county... 1900 US census. 1900 United States Federal Census Record Name: George T Campbell Home in 1900: Eagle Creek, Whitley, Kentucky Age: 7 Estimated birth year: 1893 Birthplace: Kentucky Race: White Relationship to head-of-house: Son So, let's look at this page... Well, William Campbell was born in PA, in July of 1847, and his parents were also from PA. Wm was a farmer. He and Rhoda were married for 10 years, they had 6 children, but only 3 were living in 1900. Rhoda was born in Dec of 1862 in KY, and her parents were also from KY George T shown as born June 1892 (note the difference from the index above..which is why you can't go with just the index). George T's parents were from PA & KY (we know that already from the above, but if he would have been from the 1st marriage, we may have seen a difference). James was born in Jun 1894 Nancy E was born in March of 1896. You don't say what you have already found, or where you have already looked. I found the above in less than half an hour. Had I only looked for a George in McCreary county..would never have found him. As a matter of fact, I figured this out by putting just the place name of McCreary co KY in the search area for county location for KY... Should have had tons of results, not one. Well.. Try different spelling for the county..nothing. I then opened ANIMAP program.. Ah... Last county change was 1912..hmmmm that is when McCreary formed.. If you don't have the ANIMAP program, do a websearch for "federal census maps"..you will find many free sights showing these. What is your next step? You look for William Campbell's born 1847 (give or take 5 years) in PA. You can also look for his marriage to a Rhoda, Roda, Rodey, Rhode, Rode, Ok, didn't see a marriage in Ky Checked death records for KY.. Kentucky Death Index, 1911-2000 Record about Wm A Campbell Name: Wm A Campbell Death Date: 15 June , 1912 Death Place: Jefferson Age: 064 Volume: 38 Certificate: 15126 this man is right age..Is this your Wm A? Well..you have to do some checking on that. There were several Wm A Campbells..this is closest in age. I next decided to look for Wm A Campbell in the 1850 census..55 Williams within 1845-1849 age range.. Only 2 Wm A Campbell's... One born in 1847... Name: William A Campbell Age: 3 Estimated birth year: abt 1847 Birth place: Pennsylvania Gender: Male Home in 1850 (City,County,State): Brownsville, Fayette, Pennsylvania Worth a look: Fam & dwelling 453 William F Campbell age 39 b Fayette Co PA Elizabeth age 24 b Fayette co PA William A age 3 b Fayette co PA L Campbell age 1 b Mong. Co VA Lucind Cramer (Chamer?) age 18 b Mong. Co VA Lucind Hufman age 17 b Fayette co PA What does the above tell us? That we definitely need to check the other census for 1850 (don't discard this one though) Name: Wm Alex Campbell Age: 4 Estimated birth year: abt 1846 Birth place: Pennsylvania Gender: Male Home in 1850 (City,County,State): North Buffalo, Armstrong, Pennsylvania Why include this Wm? He is 4 on census... So 1846 is correct...ahhh the census was taken in September 1850..had it been in the first part of June..this Wm would have been 3, thus born 1847. There are about 200 more Wm Campbell's born in PA within a two year spread.. Too many to put here. 1880 United States Federal Census Record about Wm. Campbell Name: Wm. Campbell Age: 33 Estimated birth year: <1847> Birthplace: Pennsylvania Occupation: Fireman On R.R. Relationship to head-of-household: Self Home in 1880: Upper Augusta, Northumberland, Pennsylvania Marital status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Spouse's name: Mollie Campbell Father's birthplace: PA Mother's birthplace: PA ******************************************************** Oh..here is only Tava Rose reference I find in KY: Kentucky Birth Index, 1911-1999 Record about Morton F Campbell Name: Morton F Campbell Date of Birth: 27 Jul 1916 County: Mccreary Mother's Name: Tava Rose State: Kentucky Volume Number: 74 Certificate Number: 36610 Volume Year: 1916 I find NO Campbell of any spelling born within five years of 1847 in KY on the 1880 census. I hope the above gives you some places to check. I am guessing, but it's my guess that William A came to KY around 1900, or just before. He may have stopped several places on his way to Ky from PA. My suggestion to anyone who is doing research: NEVER say never...Gosh I almost missed my husband's half sister/cousin (we aren't sure) that way. NEVER let the spelling of a name stop you. (How would a Swede pronounce & Spell what a Scottsman said was his name (Cummel, Kamble, Gumble, Gummel?) NEVER let the date of a person stop you (unless it's years off or more)...my grandfather put down 1857 as his year of birth in 1900.. That he was born in 1881 is a bit off, don't you think? I can see him, blue eyes twinkling, pipe in his mouth, as he told the census taker that one! NEVER let a location stop you.. Our country went through tremendous changes right up to the present time. In this case, George T was most likely born in the same spot he died in, the county changed, not the location of the property. DO check out every lead, no matter how remote it is from what you have. I kept that 1900 census...just in case.. In 1910 there he was..grampa Buren..same address... Wife, all his kids (hmmm even Uncle Fred, who was supposed to be born in 1911) & his father in law, Louis Hermes..my first finding of my great grandfather. DO check the actual films for information, remember an A to one transcriber, may look like a V to another..but actually be an N... Check the actual page. Keep accurate records of the WHEN, WHERE, WHO & HOW of your research... I am very guilty of this one! I have made up my own research log pages.. They end two years into my research...excuse..and it's just that...we packed for a move, and I never took the binder out of the box...three moves ago! If you keep your research in a log file, at your computer... You can tell right where you found an item, who found it & where. None of us are absolute experts in researching..we have gained some skill by doing the research for our own & for others along the way. (I have been plugging away at good ol' Ellis Campbell/Cammel/Camel for over 35 years now). I don't know how many times, in looking up things for others, I have found clues to my own lines. SHARE, HELP, Take the time to help others & PLEASE share what you find. Yes, it took you time & money to find what you did, but by sharing, you could gain so much more... You don't have to share it all..few names, where to look for the information you have..then let them go find it..they will be so happy to have the help. With Christmas every year, we get folks who have just gotten their first computer & will be brand new to genealogy & research...let's use the upmost of patience in guiding our new friends onto the road of finding their roots. Don't get upset when they do.. Let's make their experience on this list a good one! Lastly, The Campbell surname is one of the largest around...I would almost rather look for Jones & Smith instead of Campbell (alas, only Smith in my family is this generation, and with my Buren line)! The Campbell lines have been well researched, but even that is only the tip of the iceberg. Total time on this note 2-1/2 hours, including answering my other mail. Marge Campbell On our way to Texas Dec 31 Merry Christmas everyone! -----Original Message----- From: lorene [mailto:donaldandlorene@comcast.net] Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2005 10:03 AM To: CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CAMPBELL] Fw: ARCHIEBALD CAMPELL - SCOTLAND I am sorry but i have to disagree , because i have asked many many times on information on George Thomas Campbell born in McCreary County Kentucky June 16th 1892 and died May 3rd 1967 McCreary County Kentucky . .
