Happy New Year; The Family Cemetery Drifts into That, UH-`AH-UR, I/we never Dreamed it could get to this Point, The Cemetery where My Mothers Parents are burried in Amherst County, Va, Grand Daddy Died in 1947, By 2000 it had gotten to where it took a Buldozer to Clean it, WE had A <C. S. A. Iron Cross ceremony for My G G Great Grand Father in 2008 it looked Great then. Recently I have Seen on line; Where there is AnIDEA, That Some one Plus the State of Washington & Cal Have & are Useing GOATS to Clean the Under growth, YEA/OK- Laugh, BUT I am sure That some of My Country Cousins have seen JUST what a Hed of Goats can do to under Growth??? JUST think; We have every kind of help/Protect, Something/Any & every thing, NOW WHY NOT; A small herd of Goats, AW 4 or 5; IT would take a Bit of Effort to shuffel them around, But I bet that the <Sons & Daughters of the Confederacy would lend a Hand I have a Cousin with a Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy in Amherst County, Va Pluss Some Family Lists. Older people are getting older - younger prefer the speedway. We have family buried in Talladega. If I ever win the Million dollar lotto - might be able to help. Good luck on what you can do. Cuz AT As a certified country bumpkin, living in the rural South, I have a little experience in the maintaining and reclaiming of old burial grounds. We have used Crossbow and Remedy and a couple of other selective herbicides. The easiest thing to do is spray the briers and small shrubs and after they die off, clean up what ever else you want to be rid of. Get the local Co op "expert" to aid in what is legal and effective in the location that you are cleaning. Using Roundup only opens the door to things you might not want to try and control later. Most areas require a licensed applicator if you pay to have it done. Just get someone to do it without charging and you will be in good shape. The woody plants should have been sprayed just before the first frost for best results but you can get some control if you spray after all the leaves are fully emerged. Once you clear out the ones you want gone, fertilize and introduce the plants that you want to take over.
