Ancestry is a wonderful tool for doing genealogy..but there are a lot of transcription errors there..comes with the territory...that's also why there are errors on the actual census...and other records. I've put in several change requests due to obvious errors in transcriptions also in the past few weeks...some understandable, some I have no clue how the transcriber couldn't read a clear name..life...at least someone is trying to help. Here is what I do when looking for a person on Ancestry (or any research site): I put in the full name, birth, and state...everything I think I know, and I always use SOUNDEX, not EXACT spelling. If I don't get a hit, I omit the place of birth (sometimes that is left blank on a census), and I put in a 10 year spread on the birth year. If still no hits, I omit the state...then I omit the first name..and weed through (usually not a whole lot to go through)... If I know for certain the state..I will omit the birth year info all together...and the first name. If it's a female or the first name is not a popular name..like Zora, Ansetta, etc... I will omit the last name and search the state and first name only...this helps if the person remarried, or married for first time. By this time, I've usually found what I am looking for...but sometimes the person was just not on that census (maybe moving, or lived too remote..who knows).
