    3. Hi AT, My first Campbell ancestor in America (John Campbell of Hampshire County, VA, now WV) was one of these "transported" or forcibly removed from the UK and sold as a servant for his part in "The '45," or the Jacobite uprising of 1745. He was captured at the Battle of Golspie (aka Littleferry) and eventually convicted of treason at Old Bailey. Another Campbell cousin was able to find the information, and a book called "The Prisoners of the '45" proved useful to her in tracing John back to his hometown (Ardclach, Nairnshire) and finding his parents. This is a very hard book to get hold of, but you can find libraries that have it here: http://www.worldcat.org/title/prisoners-of-the-45/oclc/5770648 She also found the following interesting bit about him producing ramrods for Washington during the French and Indian War (Gunsmiths of West Virginia Fred R. Lambert and James B. Whisker, Ph.D. 3rd Edition Bedford, PA: Old Bedford Village Press Page 10): John Campbell ( -1789). gun repairman. On 15 October 1755 Campbell made some gun parts, including ram rods, for George Washington [8 Frederick County Historical Society Papers 35-38]. Campbell was listed on the Hampshire County tax lists of 1782 and 1784. On 12 September 1786 he bought land in Mill Creek District, Hampshire County, from John and Elizabeth Glaze [Deed Book 7, p. 114]. On 7 July 1789 Campbell obtained 439 acres near Romney from the governor of Virginia [Deed Book 9, p. 590]. His estate was appraised in late 1789 and showed no tools of the gunsmiths trade [Will Book II, p. 228]. My family is also one like you mentioned in your last mail about moving from VA to PA. They moved from VA to Fayette County, PA then Fayette County, OH, and finally to Henry County, MO. His birth date was 10 Sep 1727. Each individual who paid the transportation costs of an emigrant received fifty acres of land. The term "headright" refers both to the imported person and the claim. Headright lists constitute almost the only record of early emigration to Virginia. (The patent was not necessarily issued the year the immigrant arrived.) The headright system was not used in the Northern Neck (the area lying between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers). Those people did have the right to express them selvges, IF & When <ONE did do as they were Supposed to according to some one ELSE, they Wound up in the DUNGEN? & on a Boat to SOME Other Country, A little Known FACT about OUR Later SCOT Cousins After AMERICA WAS SETTLED, & the LAND BARRONS IN SCOTLAND, Descided that they needed More Land to Raise SHEEP, they rounded up the Under Privileged SCOT PEONS & relocated them to AUSTRAILIA. This was LONG AFTER OUR ANCESTORS WERE, Relocated. AND I am very sure that there is much Information that has been secured OR lost <ON PURPOSE> In & About THE MIGRATION PORT of TAPPAHANNOCK< VA. Many of the Descendants of the ORIGINAL People of the Northern NECK AREA of Va Know that THEIR & Some of OUR Ancestors Were Either ENDENTURED OR From THE Jails of the BRITISH ISLES. MAY BE, there were someb trans-shiped, BUT realisticly, What would be A reason to ship people to the OUTER Islands off of AMERICA, Then take a Person in Bondege & reship them to America, MAY BE CHEAP LABOR, But the Suply of CHEAP LABOR was still available in EUROPE Then the Unlimited Suply from AFRICA, & with out the Stigma of Socity LOOKING down on Enslaveing ANGLO, PERSONAl. This BIT of OUR Ancestrol Past <HAS & STILL IS TRIED TO BE Swept under the RUG, <OH AT,> JUST DOES NOT ELIMANATE THE hard SHIP that our Ancestors EXPERINCED. 1. [Campbell] TIDEWATER RECORDS AT FREDERICKSBURG CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK HISTORICAL SCOIETY
    2. Made a search of the records located at the Rappahannock Central Historical Society located in Fredericksburg today and really came up with a blank as far as adding to our Campbell heritage file. The Society did have what they advertised. A Caroline County deed index starting in 1758......but none of our known Campbell kin showed up between the beginning date and 1800. I have attached the index to the Caroline Survey book for the period 1729 through 1762 and as you can note none of our Campbell kin are shown. They have a copy of each plat that applies to each survey if any one is interested. They had some mid 1700 Church or Parrish records as well as many cemetery records, including early found cemeteries but nothing or none could be specifically identified to any of our direct relatives. They have basically the same records that Caroline maintains – the main record being extracted Court order books. The same for Essex County. They possess I would assume all genealogical books written regarding Caroline County. I went through the indexes of all the books that I had not already researched and found nothing of consequence. For Rob Richmond: They possessed a book, call number 2005-050-1300-01 titled Virginia County Records Spotsylvania County, that contained in a published book all wills and deeds between 1721 and 1800. I noted an entry for Lawrence Campbell wherein he witnessed a deed in 1752. The 1752 could be an error in transcription or Lawrence may have been born prior to 1735 by several years. Be glad to answer any questions. Regards BH

Ms. Harker's post is merely an excerpt from the book by Virginia Davis. Many trees on Ancestry show the parents of the above Joseph Campbell as James Campbell and Mary Catlet. I guess you're discounting all those folks' ancestry? As for me, I don't know who his parents were so I guess you can claim whatever you want.
