Death 7 Dec 1811 , Nelson County, Virginia, USA Note: This appears to be a confusion between the two Ambrose Campbells living in Amherst/Nelson County during this time period. 1 2 Change Date: 3 Dec 2004 at 21:11 Note: !BIOGRAPHY: From WorldConnect Post-em by Phyllis Pengilly: Note: You have mixed up two Ambrose Campbell's. There was an Ambrose Campbell (my ancestor) who was born in Scotland in 1740 and married Margaret (unkn surname). He served with the Amherst Co. militia and then in the regular army during the Rev. War. He was with the forces that fought at Yorktown under Gen. LaFayette who was a Gen. of George Washington's. He was in Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis. This Ambrose died in Nelson Co. in 1811. This area along the Piney River was, until 1808, part of Amherst Co, VA. Ambrose wife's name was Margaret, and his son, Tandy was my ancestor. His will named all of his children, and there is NO Ambrose Jr. nor a Sandy. His and Margaret's children were: Peter, Lucy, Rachel, Frances, Tandy, Elizabeth and Polly. Ambrose parents were HENRY CAMPBELL b. 1706 in Scotland, and CHARITY CAMPBELL (maiden name unkn.). Henry died in 1772 and is buried in the Campbell Cemetery at Bethal Place, Amherst Co., VA. The Ambrose Campbell who was a son of George Campbell, married in 1799 to Nancy Gillespie, daughter of George Gillespie. See George Campbell's will, 1791. !BIOGRAPHY: from the Childs-Chiles Family History compiled by Mary C. Chiles Ambrose Campbell was the third child born to George Campbell. Records show that he was born in 1751 in Nelson County, VA and that he died on December 7, 1811, in Nelson County, VA, while living on one of the farms that he had inherited from his father. Records show he died of consumption and that he served in the Virginia Militia under General George Washington in the years of 1777 and 1778. He was wounded in action. He had done some surveying in this area and was the owner/operator of a Tavern and Inn in Amherst County, VA. His wife's given name was Margaret but her last name is unknown. Their nine children are, Peter, Lucy, Rachele, Frances, Sandy, Tandy, Elizabeth, Polly, and Ambrose, Jr. Ambrose, the father, is said to be buried on his land, somewhere in Nelson County, VA. !BIOGRAPHY: From internet note from "crice@panetworks.net": My husband's grandfather's mother was Alice Mae Ruby (married Charles Rice, 1903 in MO). born in Lee Co. IA whose parents were Elias Ruby and Mary Roark. Elias Ruby was born in 1847 in Lee County IA son of an Elias Ruby and a Catharine Campbell. I have that these two married 3-19-1839 in Columbus, OH by a Joshua Glannville and then in 1844 moved out to IA. I have that Elias was born 7-7-1818 and that Catharine was born in Roanoke 5-18-1823. I have that Catharine's parents Rhoda Cheatham and Ambrose Campbell, Jr. went in 1823/24 in a covered wagon to Franklin Co., West Jefferson, OH and that Rhoda Died 1826 and Ambrose died from malaria in 1828. I have that in 1740 Ambrose Campbell, Sr., was born in Scotland and died 1811/12 . Also he served in the Revolutionary War as 401 189 Amhurst Co., VA, had a wife Margaret and that both are buried in Nelson County, VA. I am a descendant of Andrew Campbell born about 1842 in Canada and his wife Matilda. Andrew and Matilda had three children who were born in Toledo, Ohio. William Campbell born 7/17/1872, John Campbell born May 4, 1878 and Mary Campbell born 10/15/1875. The family legend is very sketchy but it is as follows: Andrew Campbell died in Toledo, Ohio in 1881. His wife Matilda married a Robert Huntsman in Toledo Ohio and they took John and Mary with them, but left my great great grandfather William behind. Is there a way someone could trace the Huntsman name in any of the Canadian Census of 1901? Thank you for any information that you can help me with. Rochelle Begovatz
