    3. Lilly--This sounds like it might just be correct. The children of this George appear to be 7 of your George & Caty's 13 kids. What do you think? 3. If I may join in on your discussion, where in Indiana? My Campbells were in Clark County, IN, in 1840, possibly earlier. Joseph B. Campbell, b.10/26/1788, PA; d. 07/05/1855, Clark Co., IN, and wife Mary, b 12/09/1791, MD; d.09/22/1864, Clark Co., IN, were the parents of (among others) Mary Ann Campbell, b. 06/14/1816; d. 06/05/1847, Clark Co., IN. Mary Ann married Samuel C. Overman 09/22/1836, Clark Co., IN, and was my g-g-great grandmother. Any connection? 1. George Campbell & Charles Campbell in the "Childs-Chiles Family History," compiled by Mary C. Chiles
    2. Steven Campbell
    3. I recently found information on a webpage <http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/e/t/Marilyn-S-Petty/GENE8-0001.html> by Marilyn Thrush Petty that related to the line I've been researching. The following is copied from the Childs-Chiles Family History compiled by Mary C. Chiles: There is a legend that has been passed down from one generation to the next that Charles Campbell, allegedly born in Ireland in 1693 and died in Ireland in 1749, was abducted into the British Navy when he was only 12 years old. History has been recorded that back in the early Colonial days, that sometimes the deck hands, sailors, cabin boys, and other help that was needed to man the sailing ship was abducted or kidnapped to get the help that was needed. The ship that he sailed on came to the new America and while on shore a local Virginia man learned of his fate and helped him hide out until the ship sailed back to England. He worked and, in time, accumulated land and wealth. He returned to Ireland when he was about 30, married, accumulated land there, and raised a family. His wife's name is not known but it is said they had three children, Tabituth, George, and Elizah. Charles Campbell allegedly died and is buried in Ireland - somewhere. George Campbell, son of Charles, was born in Ireland in the year 1724. He died in Virginia in the year 1790. It is not known the exact year that he came to the Colonies but it is believed that he may have come for the settlement of his father's estate. He led an uneventful life, but did obtain more land and wealth. He had settled in Nelson County, Virginia. He had married but his wife's name is unknown. They had seven children, Mary, Sarah, Ambrose, Cathy, Joel, George, and John. George Campbell died while living on his land in Nelson County, Virginia, and is buried there somewhere. This George Campbell is my ancestor. I'm trying to find a copy of this "Childs-Chiles Family History" compiled by Mary C. Chiles. I have tried to search the Web for the document, and the author, with no success. I also attempted to contact Marilyn Thrush Petty, but the contact information on her webpage was no longer correct. Can anyone help me find this source? Or, if not, any other source that may confirm some of this oral history information?

    2. Sandy, The info I have from Dr. Sam Massie's genealogy is that John Spirgen Massie(called "D") was the son of Charles Massie (b.???; d. 1887) who married Sally Miller(1821-1896). Dr. Massie listed the children as: 1. Lowell- died young - no issue 2. Dirwood or Durwood m. Virginia Hatter and had 2 girls 3. Everett- married - one child [This is probably "Emrel"] 4. Margaret - married twice and moved to Ohio 5. Lucy married???- LivesinPennsylvania 6. Ella married 1st??Chittum and 2nd ??Via- one child by Chittum 7. Josie married Fletcher Cash - children 8. Doris married 1st Alla Swayer and 2nd??? with 2 daughters He only had Lonnie Maddox listed as John's wife, but no other info. Hope this helps. 1. Re: [CAMPBELL] George Campbell (?-1791), husband of Caty (?)

    3. Hello Steve, I am in the same boat! I don't have any EARLY information on my ancestor George Campbell, who married Caty. His birth is usually given as 1720, approximately. Some researchers feel strongly that he was the son of George Campbell b. 1700, who was married to Margaret b. 1725, and they also lived in Amherst Co VA. If George b. 1720 is the son of George b. 1700, then he would be from a first wife, not Margaret, as she was younger that George b. 1720. The fact is that both men were named George Campbell and both lived and died in Amherst Co VA in the same time frame, so this is what has tied them together in the minds of many. I personally have never seen anything which ties the 2 men or families together. Without actual documents, we can only 'guess' at the storyof George Campbell b. 1720, who married Caty. Here are a few theories which can be researched, to prove or disprove: #1. Did he come directly from Scotland or Ireland to Virginia, and then come into and settle in the Amherst Co VA area? #2. Was he born in Virginia, of a Campbell line which had come earlier? #3. Was he from Pennsylvania? Did he come down the "Great Wagon Road" from Philly into VA? These 3 possible scenerios as as far as I have gotten in my research. Was he a foreign born immigrant? Was he from a Campbell line well established in Virginia from the earliest days? Was he from a Northern family line, which came into South and settled in VA? Each one of these possiblities are interesting. I hope that some other Campbell researchers will step forward and come up with some additional help and suggestions.
