    1. George Campbell (d. 1791) of Virginia
    2. A while back I posted a story about George Campbell from a "Chiles-Childs Family History" book. It said his father was a Charles Campbell who was born in Ireland. I wanted to find the book to see if the author provided any sources for the story. I managed to find where the only copy of the book is located: The Cincinnati Public Library. I haven't contacted them yet, but plan to this week, unless someone lives in Cincinnati and is willing to visit the library to check for the information. I have a feeling the book will say that the story of Charles Campbell was an "oral history passed on from generation to generation". I still haven't found any proof that the Charles Campbell--allegedly born in Ireland in 1694, purchased land in Virginia between 1712-1724, and died in Ireland in 1749--ever existed.

    1. Campbells in Abbeville County, SC USA 1830 +
    2. Judy C
    3. Fellow researchers, Hello. I'm looking to connect with anyone researching Campbell lines in Abbeville County, South Carolina in the 1830 + timeframe. Specifically, I'm looking to share with anyone researching Thomas Campbell, Matthew Campbell or William Campbell from the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Abbeville County. Thomas Campbell who was enumerated in Abbeville County, South Carolina in the 1830 and 1840 censuses _may_ have been the Thomas Campbell enumerated in 1800, 1810, and 1820 censuses in Laurens County, South Carolina. This Thomas Campbell would have been born circa 1770-1780, based on his ages in the census records: 1830 (age 50-60)and 1840 (age 60-70). Thomas Campbell _may_ have been related to my husband's 2nd-great-grandfather, Matthew Campbell, as Mat Campbell was enumerated in the next household after Thos Campbell in the 1840 census for Abbeville County. Matthew Campbell was in Coweta County, Georgia for the 1850 census and died in Carroll County, Georgia in 1887. I believe Matthew Campbell was born circa 1812 in South Carolina and married Rebecca Edwards, daughter of David Edwards, of Abbeville County, per an Abbeville County Equity Court case. In the 1830 census for Abbeville County, the Thomas Campbell household is followed by the William Campbell household. I am looking to find anyone researching any of these Campbell lines to share information. Thanks to anyone who's read all of this, and I look forward to hearing from a new-to-me cousin! 1. Sharing information
    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Dear all Campbell researchers, We all started in Scotland (I presume), then some went to Ireland for several political/economic reasons. Some stayed put, some moved to Canada, USA, and who-knows-where-else. The ones named Campbell that got to USA (Colonial America) could have arrived from England, Ireland, Scotland, the Carribean Islands, which were British controlled, places like Jamaica, Barbados, etc. My Campbell family happens to be in Central Virginia in 1751, but they may have previously been in New York City, New Jersey, Conneticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, or even Canada. My Virginia Campbell family could have come right off the boat from Scotland to Jamestown, VA. or perhaps they came to some NORTHERN colony and then worked their way downwards, looking for land, looking for other men named Campbell, the feeling of "Clan", the same names, the same ancestry, the same religion, the same basic culture? Did Nelson Co and Amherst Co VA resemble their hilly country in Scotland, their ancestral homeland area? Was there some 'super-duper' land deal going on that caused them to pick Amherst-Nelson Co VA area? What was the reason that so many men named CAMPBELL, but yet unrelated, all showed up at the same point on the map? Pure coincidence, or by design? When we have more people participating in the DNA project, we might find that the Campbell's in Virginia are related to earlier Campbell up North in the New England colonies, or maybe even in Pennsylvania. It just takes time to get the pieces to fall together. So we do all need to share our lines, because someone looking for a Campbell in the 1600's in New England, just might turn out to be the ancestor to a Campbell born in 1900 in Oklahoma. Plus, when you do post your information occasionally on the mailing list, it gets on the internet, because the messages are archived, so years from now, some new researcher might be doing a "google" search for their ancestor, and Up Pops your original posting on the mailing list, and they will email you and connect that way. Best regards, Lilly Martin, of George and Caty Campbell, Amherst Co VA.

    3. Been a busy few days.. Have two prospects to see the house today, so had to rush to finish packing this computer room/office (kept out these last Campbell pages, didn't tape the box yet). Remember that this information was gracefully shared with me by another researcher, much came from Rutger's College archives (I think that is how it's spelled). I have added the sources as they are in these handwritten notes. The location of docs, etc... I have no other information on most of this...a bit on the Ellis R. Campbell line, but will post that here. I have Ellis R. Campbell's Rev War files (Penison), and also a copy of an application to DAR (Daughter's of Amer. Rev.)listing him as their patriot ancestor, and the typed will excerpt from NJWillbook. My interest in this Ellis R Campbell b 1756 in NJ was reason this kind person sent me the information on the Campbell's from the area, as they were researching for a Campbell in same area. 1. Brooke County, VA (W.Va.)
    2. Lee Ann Dauphinot
    3. In 1840, there were several Campbell families in Brooke County, Va., now W. Va. Heads of household include about 3 Alexanders, Daniel, David, William, James, and Robert. I believe I am descended from Daniel. I understand that Alexander Campbell, who started the Campbellite movement, was also in Brooke County and was possibly one of the Alexanders listed in the 1840 census. Does anyone have information concerning these Campbells? How were they connected? Who were their wives, parents, siblings, children? Thank you. Lee Ann Dauphinot

    3. I looked at the 1860 census and found a William M. Campbell born in Illinois with his father Robert born in Penn and his mother Susan born in North Carolina. It says he is 12 not 10 but I would think this would be the family. They are living in Jefferson Twp, Switzerland Co, Indiana. Hope this helps, Diane Campbell Montreal, Quebec, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "C .Dossett" <cdossett@woh.rr.com> To: <CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 1:49 PM Subject: [CAMPBELL] MY CAMPBELL'S > Dear list, > With everyone talking again about their "Campbell's" I thought I'd give it a go! > William M. 2. ATTENN JEAN BUNCH, I have been subscribed to The Campbell list Among others for Some time. We have many Cousins that very liberally share Family information. What have you shared, in as much as this is the first time that I have noticed your E-ADDY, YES I wonder Just what some SUBSCRIBERS ever Contribute to the Enhancement of the Clan Campbell. There fore I still believe that Cousin Shirley has a very good point. I wonder are you referring to Cousin Shirley's Reference to those who choose not to share. I like to help if I can, & I also Sincerly believe Constructive Critssisiom is very GOOD for genealogical Research, it would be more benefit to a researcher to receive some Constructive Criticism in stead the resarcher DOING A lot of Work & one to devote time & effort & then learn that their Record is false, SO Cuz you see the point that Cuz Shirley & I are advocating, SHARING is FAMILY LIKE. I had much see some one making an effort to correct me than to say something & seat back & see nothing, & feel that any thing that I said to have been DELETED CUZ A T &Leona <atpowelljr@aol.com>

    3. Thank you for your response to my email. It is not that I am unwilling to share my Campbell search but my family was in Connecticut from 1738 to 1887. I am only finding yours in New Jersey and Virginia. So they don't seem to connected to yours. Mine begins with Hugh Campbell b 1694 and Mary Patterson b 1684 m 1706. they were all in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland. If you see a connection, I will be happy to share what I have. As I said, I am a novice on the computer so don't know how to do many things. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Atpowelljr@aol.com> To: <CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 12:01 PM Subject: Re: [CAMPBELL] RE: New Jersey Campbell's- part 4 -FEW New York mentions) > ATTENN JEAN BUNCH, > I have been subscribed to The Campbell list Among others for Some time.
