Lilly; Excuse me as I am not attempting to give you a history lesson regarding the Massies of Nelson County. However, there is an excellent book, "The Campbells, Coffey's and Fitzgerald's of The Tye River Valley" written by Dr. Lynn Nelson, a professor at Tennessee State University. The book is available for loan by the W&M University, Williamsburg. The book is about farming by the Massie Family after the Revolutionary War; the techniques they employed and the problems they encountered with his neighbors. This is not a genealogy book but mainly agriculture in the very early years of the 19th century. As I understand it: Major Thomas Massie, after the Revolutionary war removed from the Fredericksburg area to the The Tye River Valley in mid-Nelson County to a location now known as Massies Mill - a village named after the Massies, Major Massie and his brother Doctor Massie owned thousands of acres of land in the area. His plantation home "Evergreen" still exist near Massies Mill and the Massie family cemetery; a large rockwall constructed cemetery, is just adjacent to the home place. The Massie built and operated 3 grist mill; one at Massies Mill, one at Tyro and another he constructed near the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Montebello. At one time he owned what is route 56 today as a toll road, and yes at one time he owned 110 slaves. Lynn Nelson obtained his doctors degree at W&M. Surprisingly, Lynn stated that the Massie papers, books, legers, etc, are housed at the University of Kansas!! Hello Marvin, I don't know of any connection. I do know there is a HULL Association, you could find them on google, you probably already know them? I have a Hull connection in Civil War era in Ohio. Apparently, the Hull Association keeps records on all the various Hull families. Concerning the name MASSIE: in the area in Amherst Co-Nelson Co. the name MASSIE was used alot in reference to a Massie family there. I am not a Massie descendant, so I can not tell you all the Massie genealogies, but I recall that in one of the Heritage Books a writer/descendant mentioned that Billie Massie was one of the largest landowners, and slaveowners in the area. So the Massie name was prominate in the area. I have seen the name MASSIE was given to babies which did NOT have any Massie ancestry, in other words, they were not connected to the family, just used the name in honor of a prominate family of the area, but not related in any way (many time the Massie was the MIDDLE name). So in this case the name Massie could have entered the family and been used by several geneations, but will not go back to any Massie family line. So that is just a location name, and that name could have gone anywhere in USA or the world later. Donna, my Campbells "seem" to have originated in or near Tioga County, Pa and then to Warren County, PA and ended up in Columbiana County, Ohio. Then spread out all along both states. My family mostly grew up right along the Ohio/Pa state line near Beaver Falls, PA. Hello Rebecca, I have sent to you privately 2 files, on each man, the research was done by myself. Those 2 files may be slightly old, there may be a few more details to add, so if you see something interesting and need more, just email me back. Tell me and the whole list what you are working on right now? What name? Do you see any connection to either Amherst Co or Nelson Co VA? The descendants of William Campbell and his brother Henry Campbell could have gone anywhere in USA or the world, but they started out in the Nelson-Amherst Counties area originally. What location is your Campbell family from? Let's see if we can all help you. Hello, I study the name CAMPBELL in Amherst and Nelson Co VA, so I have a marriage listing of all Campbell groom and bride marriages from official courthouse records, not hearsay. This is from an index of marriages occuring in Virginia from 1761-1852, and is found on microfilm at the Library of Virginia, at Richmond. I also have separate unrelated ancestors involved with the Fort Germanna community in Culpeper Co VA and Madison Co VA. I am sending this email to both the Campbell masiling list and the Germanna Colonies mailing list, as it affects both. If you are reading this, and need a basic explaination of WHAT is Fort Germanna, and when , where, why, please go to www.germanna.org I will now list all the Germanna/Campbell marriages. 1. George Campbell, m. Mary CLORE 12-3-1807 Madison Co VA 2. Matthais Campbell, m. Martha Ann Huffman 2-10-1848 Rappahannock Co VA 3. Morgan Campbell, m, Mary Huffman 5-16-1807 Chesterfield Co VA 4. William Campbell, m. Lucy Ann Huffman 10-16-1837 Madison Co VA 5. Joseph Keiffer, m Pheobe A. Campbell 10-28-1831 Rockingham Co VA 6. Simon Camper, m. Polly Campbell 7-7-1810 Botetourt Co VA 7. Simon Camper, m. Polly Campbell 1-11-1809 Botetourt Co VA I have no more info on these names, nor do I KNOW 100% that they are Germanna descendants, this is guesswork on my part. My own Campbell ancestry is NOT part of Fort Germanna. Best regards, Lilly Martin
I have Campbells on both sides of my family. Some came from Scotland, to the us, and some came from Ireland. some went to North carolina, then scattered themselves between there and Alabama. Those are the ones on my mothers side. The ones on my fathers side went from Tennesse to Kentucky and on up into Indiana. It really wouldnt surprise me to find out they are related some how. I still have a lot of looking to do. Marvin <marv3@redrivernet.com> wrote: Donna, My Campbell's were from PA to OH and KY then IN and IL. I really try to stay away form these discussions but I feel compelled to share my information. My Great Grandfather was John Wesley Campbell, born in Ills. and living near Grand Junction Colorado by 1895. I have a letter that he wrote before 1910 where he stated that it had been snowing for several days and he had been worrying about the Indian families as he had not been able to check on them for several days. I know that my Grandfather, Henry Campbell, and son of John Wesley, married my Grandmother in Colburn Colorado in 1908. My Grandmother was a nurse and she was hired by the state of Colorado to take care of the Indian children that attended school there. Several of these children lived at the school all year long. Our family gave food and money as they could to the Indian School. This school is still in operation or was a few years ago. When I was small (several years ago) I remember my Grandfather talking about the Indians coming over and helping out with chores. I certainly never heard them called slaves. They were in need of food and starving and the folks that could helped them out with sharing what they had and the Indians in turn would come over and do work for the ones that were helping them. Lilly; There was a Huffman family that moved from Fort Germanna to the Pedlar Mills area of Amherst County prior to the Revolutionary War. Both father Frederick and son Henry served with Major William Cabell's Amherst County soldiers during the war. Frederick had a daughter Mary that obtained a marriage bond to marry John Smith in Amherst county in 1779 but there was never an indication the marriage was finalized as shortly thereafter Mary Huffman married a Craig from Augusta County and moved to Kentucky and John Smith married Mary Whitehead!! Howdy Cousins. Lilly & Phyllis, I will not Say no to the Posibility of Abigal/Abigail as having been a Slave, BUT I was raised in that area, I personally Know of There being, Afro American Youngsters being taken in & given a home, ONE in particular, There were abt a Dozen kids in the Family, of Afro Americans, The Whole Family existed on Less that three Should have had to call life Bearable. One of the Girls used to Do My Mothers Laundry for the ONLY full Meal she Had that Week. Mama Taught her to Cook & SEW & Patch Clothes, Her only Problem was NO CHANCE at home. Her Brother Went & Lived at the home of My Fathers Sister & Family of 7 Children, Now Believe me Cousins in the mid 1930,s one more mouth was a Burden. But this Afro American lived Worked With & For My Aunt & Cousins for a home, but was not a slave, as was just as likely for Cousin Henry Campbell & Abigal/Abigail. Check out the Census Records that we Come by & often there is an Extra head with Another Name & Race. I am not trying to Defend Slavery, But, Rather Attempting to Better understand the potential Hardship of so many people. What was AS bad if not worse, was the treatment of so many people in that Central Va area, was the Policy of the officialdom that would take a Wayward Girl as they Called it, comit her to the Training center, Sterilize her & Farm her out to a family as a domestic. This is not MY biased opinion there have Cases taken to court & Proven that the People were missed treated. In a Case in Particular in Albemarle County Va NOT very many Years ago. This treatment was in effect From 1924 to 1942 Promoted By a misguided State official in charge of the Vital Statistics, WHO went so far as to OFFICIALLY state that there were No Indians in Va because their Skin did not Match the Texture of the Indians of Colorado. NOW this may not sound like GENEALOGY, to some people, but when there arises a question as to Cousin Henry Campbell leaving $25.00 to one, <Abigal/Abigail a Servant Indian Woman> I Believe that a More in-depth observation becomes Nessary. I hope that this will not be Misinterpreted. A T POWELL,Jr. <atpowelljr@aol.com>
