If one wants to accept the research of the most famous Amherst and Nelson county researcher, Alexander Brown, and I know of no better source, then we should accept the fact that, one of the earliest Campbell's into what is Nelson County today is a John Campbell. Below is what Brown had to say about this John Campbell. " John Campbell and his son Robert in 1749 owned 5504 acres of land on the branches of Mechums river near the present Nelson County Line. He was born in Ireland, migrated to PA in 1725; from there to Augusta county about the year 1730 where he died. Five grown sons and several daughters migrated with him from Ireland, and from these have descended many of the Campbells of the West, of the Holston and of Virginia!!!" ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandy Harris" <sundymundy@frontiernet.net> To: <CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 05, 2006 3:43 PM Subject: Re: [CAMPBELL] CAMPBELL's from Nelson, Amherst, Albemarle > Did your Aunt Florrie have any Campbells of the 1600s in her family > history? > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <noliver3600@comcast.net> > To: <CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, January 04, 2006 4:02 PM > Subject: [CAMPBELL] CAMPBELL's from Nelson, Amherst, Albemarle > > >> Lilly, AT and other researchers, I have something to throw out there. >> My great-aunt Florrie Campbell who wrote a family history (although I >> have found mistakes) included the statements that I will include and I >> would like you opinion. >> 1. Lilly, AT and other researchers, I have something to throw out there. My great-aunt Florrie Campbell who wrote a family history (although I have found mistakes) included the statements that I will include and I would like you opinion. 1. She stated that three Campbell brothers came to the America, one was Thomas who settled in Bedford Co., VA William who settled in Nelson Co., VA and the third she didn't know his name settled in King George Co., VA. 2. She also stated that Washington Campbell only had one sister, Betty who in her later life lived with Washington's son Martin. 3. The following is information I've summarized from Revolutionary War pension records for John, William, and Henry Campbell, sons of George Campbell (d. 1791). Does this help give anyone new info? John CAMPBELL was born in 1750 in Albemarle Co., VA and moved to Amherst Co. when he was a small boy. He married Frances (--) in February 1779 in Amherst Co., VA. Frances (--) CAMPBELL was born about 1761. She was still alive o! n March 11, 1842 according to pension records. John CAMPBELL was drafted in Amherst, VA. in 1781. He served as a private in the militia under Captain John Loving for four months and was at Yorktown. John was also on the Guilford Expedition in a volunteer rifle company commanded by Captain James Dillard for not quite three months. He died on January 29, 1838 in Amherst Co., VA. William CAMPBELL was born in 1754 in Albemarle Co., VA and moved to Amherst Co. when he was a small boy. In 1832 he was a resident of Nelson Co., VA. He married Sarah Salley (--) CAMPBELL on December 22, 1785 by Rev. Benjamin Burgy of the Baptist Church with a license from Amherst Co., VA. She was born about 1763. Sarah (--) CAMPBELL was alive on January 29, 1849, but did not appear on the 1850 Virginia census. William and Sarah Salley named three children in the pension records: James Campbell, born October 7, 1786; Nansey Campbell, born December 25, 1788; and Wil! liam Campbell, Jr., born August 17, 1796. William CAMPBELL entered military service in 1779 and marched from Amherst Co. to Holly Springs, ten miles south of Richmond, where he served for three months. He returned home and after a short time marched under Captain John Loving from Amherst County to the lower part of Virginia and to several positions and finally York where he was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis on October 19, 1781. William died on April 16, 1836 in Nelson Co., VA. Henry CAMPBELL was born in February 1764 in Amherst Co., VA, in the part which is now Nelson. Henry married Sarah (--) CAMPBELL on May 19, 1786 in Amherst Co., VA, by the Rev. Benjamin Coleman of the Baptist Church. Sarah was born between 1764 and 1765 and was still alive on January 25, 1844, according to pension records. Henry CAMPBELL was drafted in the militia of Amherst Co. as a private and marched on a tour of three months, except for a da! y or two, under Capt. James Dillard from Amherst Co. to North Carolina. He arrived on the battle ground of Guilford just before the termination of the engagement. The company was not in the battle. He was again drafted from Amherst Co. in 1781 and marched under Capt. John Loving for four months and was at the siege of Yorktown. He lived in Nelson County until his death on January 13, 1835. ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers. I think I discovered the reason for my problems with Ambrose Campbell. Lilly Martin said that an Ambrose Campbell, born in Scotland in 1740 to Henry and Charity Campbell, died in Nelson Co. in 1811. I explained that there was only one Ambrose Campbell in VA on the 1810 census, but I believed it was the son of George and Caty Campbell. Upon further review, I found the "Ambrous Campbell" living in Nelson Co., VA on the 1810 census. The "Ambrous" spelling sounds much more likely to be of someone born in Scotland. This Ambrose was living with a woman over 45, he was over 45, and the couple had a young woman 16-25 living with them, most likely a caretaker. I'm certain, based on the name spelling, and location, that this Ambrose is the son of Henry and Charity, while the Amherst Co. Ambrose is son of George and Caty. As for Lilly Martin's information that Ambrose sold his land share to his brother John in the mid- 1820's. I still can't find Ambrose on the 1820 census. I can find Ambrose, married to Dorcas in 1811, on the 1820 census, but he's the only one. I suppose I'll keep hunting. Does my separation of Ambrous and Ambrose sound legitimate?
Steven; I can understand your inquiry on both the number of Ambrose questions and also the difference in RW data. Lilly may be able to satisfy your questions on both. If not, when I return I will see if I can give you the data that would seem most logical. I'm going to be gone for a week or so in Richmond with my wife in the hospital. I will tell you that the Ambrose son of George and Caty D1791was married to Nancy and I am confident that he is the one that was under Major Cabell during the War. The Ambrose, son of Henry and Charity served under a different command. He is in the Clan of Phyllis Pengilly. I have seen his pension information. Ambrose, the son of Edward Campbell (son of George and Caty) was not in the RW. Dear Campbell researchers, My ancestor George Campbell is thought to be born about 1720, and we know that he died in 1791 in Amherst Co VA. I am NOT sure that we know positively who his FIRST born child was but I 'guess' that is was John Campbell b. 1750, that is not proven, I am guessing on my own. That would make George Campbell about 30 years old when he started haveing kids, give or take a few years. If George came as a young man from abroad, then he might have arrived in 1740 time frame, up to 1749 approximately. He could have arrived with a wife, but he could have arrived as a single fella. Maybe he was born in America, maybe his father was the immigrant? By 1720 he could have been second or even third generation born in America, I do now know who was the FIRST immigrant named Campbell to the shores of America, maybe at Plymouth Rock, or Jamestown, or Manhattan. I just don't know the name of the first man named Campbell, maybe someone does know. If we use the theory that George Campbell came as a young single guy, then got married, bought land, had kids, then I would 'guess' he might have been the one in the records listed below as: 1. George Campbell arrived in Virginia 1740. 2. George Campbell arrived New York City, 1742 3. George Campbell arrived 1743, bonded passenger to America These three records above would fit nicely. The last one does not give a LOCATION of the arrival, perhaps the book tells more? I noticed in a recent posting, someone listed the Campbells which appeared on the 1787 Tax List for Amherst Co., VA. Lilly Martin then attempted to identify the Campbells on the list. I would like to somehow sort out my Ambroses. I have one in three consecutive generations. Ambrose, son of George and Caty Campbell. I have no information on him at all. I assume he was born in Amherst Co., because all his siblings were born there or in Albemarle Co. On the 1810 census there is an Ambrose Campbell. The other two Ambroses wouldn't have been old enough to be on the census yet, and were in different counties, so I assume this is the son of George and Caty. The census showed: Male over 45; female over 45; male 16-25; female 26- 44; female 16-25; 2 females 10-15; female under 10 This would have made the Ambrose born in 1765 or earlier, right where he would need to be to be a son of George and Caty. This Ambrose is not on any census after 1810. There's a marriage between an Ambrose Campbell and a Nancy Gillispie on July 2, 1799 in Amherst Co., VA. I'm not sure if this is the son of George and Caty, considering he'd be at least 34 when he married, a bit late for the time, unless it was a second marriage. There's an Ambrose Campbell on the 1783 Tax Lists for Amherst Co., VA. Lilly Martin believes this was an Ambrose Campbell born in 1740 in Scotland, son of Henry and Charity Campbell. To me, it would make sense that the Ambrose on the tax lists in 1783 was Ambrose, son of George and Caty. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Lynden Harris has an Ambrose Campbell from Amherst Co., VA on a muster roll. I'm guessing this is Ambrose, son of George and Caty too. However, if there is an Ambrose, son of Henry and Charity, in the same county, and in his 20's or 30's, it could be him instead. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I didn't even know there was another Ambrose Campbell, son of Henry and Charity, in Amherst Co. in the 1770's and 1780's. My other Ambrose Campbells, which add to the confusion: Ambrose, son of Edward and Frances Campbell. This Ambrose was born in either 1782 (headstone), or 1790 (county death register), or 1789 (1850 census), depending where you look. He married Dorcus Edsall in 1811, and died in 1857. He lived and died in Rockbridge Co., VA. Ambrose, son of Joel and Esther Campbell. This Ambrose was born in 1809, married Nancy Anna Crist in 1834, and died in 1887. He was born, lived, and died in Rockbridge Co., VA.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, Campbell Cousins Steven Campbell & Other Descendant's of George & Catherine. NOW: Both John & William Campbell were my 4th Grt Grand Father's. Though, John Campbell was born in Albemarle Co. Va. This is the reason that I do not Believe that he Moved from Albemarle, County to Amherst County, PLEASE permit me to explain why I do not believe that he MOVED Because: Nelson County was formed in 1807/8 From Amherst, Co. Va. Which was formed From Albemarle Co. in 1761, Albemarle Co. VA/ was formed in 1744 From Goochland & Louisa. Louisa Co. Va. was formed From Hanover Co. Va. in 1742. Hanover Co. Va. was formed from New Kent Co. Va. in 1721. This information is from: <RETRACING OUR FAMILY LEGACY> Evolution of Virginia Counties. I am sure that My 5th Grt Grand Parent's Lived in All three, Albemarle, Amherst & Nelson Counties in Va & IF as My records Show These Campbell's Came to the U. S. the First George Campbell Settled in New Kent County in Early 1700__?, When it was in New Kent County Boundry, They very likely Settled in the area that is to day Nelson County Va. & their County Name Changed With the Formation of new Counties & not by the Campbell Family Moving. To give my contention Credit, George Campbell owned land in the area that is to day Nelson County when it is shown that he FIRST owned land. My Ascendency> George Campbell & Catherine, <5th Grt Grand Parent's: John Campbell M Frances <Wright> to Son Jesse Campbell, M. Poly Harvey to Dau. Rohda Campbell Married to Joshua W<BOSS JOSH> Campbell, <The Grand Son of William Campbell & Sarah <SALLY> Goode> To BOSS JOSH, Son Jesse Washington Campbell M. to Saphronia Mitchell to Their Son Tom Josh Campbell M Ora Lee WILMER To their DAU Myra Campbell To ME <AT> I am confident that My Campbell family lived right where they say that they lived & when they said that they lived there But it was the County Line that Moved & Not the Campbell Family. I thought everyone already had these records, but now I'm led to believe this may not be the case. She was still alive on March 11, 1842 according to pension records. William and Sarah Salley named three children in the pension records: James Campbell, born October 7, 1786; Nansey Campbell, born December 25, 1788; and William Campbell, Jr., born August 17, 1796. Henry CAMPBELL was drafted in the militia of Amherst Co. as a private and marched on a tour of three months, except for a day or two, under Capt. He lived in Nelson County until his death on January 13, 1835.

i agree, the more info one throws out when asking for help the better chance of getting help.also if someone has information thats a little different don't get mad if they throw it out there. thats why this is research. every one doesn't have access to the same things, but if you put it together and work to prove it>>>>>>>> sheri horton josehp and rebecca chambers campbell (nc)
