    3. The Rockfish flows down the Rockfish Valley and flows into the James on the south East side of Nelson County. George and Cathy lived on the upper North branch of Piney and on the south west side of Nelson County at the base of Main Top or Priest Mountain. From the Piney area or Lowesville today could be anywhere from 10 to 20 miles apart from the Rockfish. If George and Caty were on the Rockfish or anywhere in the Amherst/Nelson area prior to 1761, they were in Albemarle County. 3. Steve; Alexander Brown, listed most of the individuals "taking up" lands in Amherst/Nelson county prior to 1761. Only John Campbell and his son Robert were listed. According to Brown, John immigrated from Ireland in 1725 to PA, and from there to Augusta County in 1730. They took up lands (550 acres) in what is Nelson county today in 1749. Neil Campbell is mentioned in the history of the Cabells in early Albemarle!! 3. Steve; Yes, a George Campbell did buy land in 1764 from a John Robertson (Deed Book A page 183) but the location was on the Rockfish River. Figured this to be some other George Campbell. The documents from 69-71 were for land in the Piney River area. 3. Lilly; As suspected, George and Caty Campbell were late arrivals in Amherst/Nelson County, or, at least he was late in "taking up" lands? I stopped in Amherst today and look at his acquisitions( deeds) which were 1769-1771. When his children say they were born and moved to Amherst, that perhaps is true. It is possible that he moved there in the 20's and done what most of our ancestor's done - became "squatters" and farmed vacant land at their pleasure. BH

    3. There are several other DAR Applications using Ellis R Campbell as the patriot. I was looking for others who may have information on this ancestor. Perhaps by comparing notes from the different applicants, we can figure out where his children ended up. Marge

    3. I thought someone had land deeds from George Campbell in Amherst Co. from 1760 or 1761? 1769 would make John 19 years old, and he said he moved to Amherst when he was a "small child." Henry Campbell, according to his pension record, was born in February 1764 in Amherst Co., VA, “in the part which is now Nelson.” So we know they were there by 1764. I have scribbled in my notes, "They must have moved between 1761 and 1763," but I can't remember what in my notes made me draw that conclusion. I'll check my land and pension records and check back, but I'm certain the move occurred between those years. 2. Larry Campbell
    3. Ran across this while sorting thirty years of files. As printed: The next Source on Campbell-- Annals of Newberry (S.C.) by Chapman & O'Neall originally published 1892 page 168 " In 1781, a party of whigs, under the command of Col. Hays, passed in the neighborhood of Coats' shop, (Newberry Court House,) to Jacob Brooks' ,(now the plantation of Harrington Pope.) Two of the party, James Tinsley and John Campbell , a lad, son of Captain Angus Campbell, of Laurens, and brother of the present Dr. Robert Campbell, diverged from their direct route to have a horse shod at Coats' shop, at the Cedar Spring, just below the village grave yard. Having accomplished this they started to rejoin their companions at Brooks'. They were fired upon about where the barn of Drayton Nance, Esq., now stands, on Higgins' Road. One ball took effect in the bridle arm of Campbell; his mare jumped from under him , and accompanied Tinsley in his flight to Brooks'. There the command turned out, and retracing Tinsley's steps, they found Campbell dead. The persons, whoever they were, who had wounded him, had completed the work of death. His companions bore him to Coats' shop. On the margin of Scotts Creek, he was buried; and there he slept the sleep of death until, in 1849, the excavations for the railroad laid bare the remains. They collected, with pious care, by his excellent brother, Dr. Robert Campbell, and buried in the family burying ground.

    2. Kevin & Nancy Caldwell
    3. Looking for information for Thomas Campbell b. 1866 who lived in Chippewa County, Michigan around 1890 +. He had 4 brothers that emigrated with him: Hugh Russell Campbell b. 1864 (married Matilda Yahnke, and settled in Minnesota), and Alexander Campbell b. 1859 (married Martha Jane ? and settled in Pontiac, Michigan), William Campbell b. 1861 (married Margaret Jane Jory), and Donald Campbell b. 1852 who settled in Duluth, Minnesota. They were all born in Canada to Scottish parents (from Petty, Invernesshire, Scotland). Thomas might have moved to Minnesota, but not much is known about either him or Donald. We believe Thomas died February 15, 1928 in Duluth, Minnesota, and Donald died January 6, 1922 in Duluth, Minnesota. Does anyone know these families? Any help would be appreciated. Nancy Caldwell

Campbell has a younger woman and 2 children living with him. She is Arrana M. Campbell, b. 1827. Her father is said to be Cornelius Campbell, but that is not confirmed, and is disputed by some. Benjamin M. Campbell, the son Arrana, did marry Julia Ann Campbell, d/o George T. Campbell b. 1824 and Eady B. WRIGHT. George and Eady are my ancestors. It is possible that this John H. Campbell was NOT married to Arrana Campbell, but she was only living with him, perhaps he was an older relative? If she is the d/o Cornelius Campbell, then he was her mother's brother. Because there was another man, also named JOHN Campbell, also in Nelson Co, but I believe you will find his land, and his census records, close to COFFEY names, in Nelson Co VA. Also, John H., s/o Henry, is 18 years YOUNGER than the other man named John Campbell. Additionally, I always see the H. intial used on the younger man, so that might be one more way to distinguish the 2 men, who are neighbors, but not related. The older man was John Campbell married to Amelia Coffey. " [4] "I think this man might be listed in the 1820 census at Nelson Co, and possibly listed in 1830, 1840, and in the 1850 census at Nelson Co he is definately listed. In the 1850 census is says he is 60 yrs old, and has a young woman named Jrena Campbell, 22 yrs old, living with him. This lady is Arrena Campbell b. 1829, and is the daughter of his sister Catherine Campbell, d/o Henry. Catherine Campbell married Cornelius Campbell in 1816 in Nelson Co VA. This Arrena (Irene?) was John H. Campbell's niece, did they marry and have 2 kids? Or did she have 2 kids with an unknown man, and she simply raised those 2 kids in the household of her Maternal Uncle? That is the question." [4] "In the 1860 census, John H. Campbell 71 yrs, and Areena M. Campbell 33 yrs, are still listed together in the same house, and now she has 2 children with them: Virginia M. Campbell b. 1851, and Benjamin M. Campbell b. 1853." [4] They are living at Rose Mill, Nelson Co VA, next door to the house of Catherine Campbell, widow of Cornelius, and next door to William H. Campbell b. 1818, married to Martha (Mays). "In the 1870 census, John H. Campbell is not listed (dead), I can not find Arrena (Irene-Irena?) at all, I can not find her daughter Virginia, but by then she would be 19 yrs old, and may have married by then, her son Benjamin M. Campbell b. 1853 is living in with his Maternal Aunt, Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820, in Nelson Co VA."[4] "Next clue: there is a marriage record for a John H. Campbell married to Harriet B. Bryant 6-9-1848 Nelson Co VA. John would be 58 yrs old at that date, this is possibly his second marriage, but I have no info for a first marriage for him, so it could be his first, late, marriage. I feel that this marriage 'looks' like it should be him, and no one else. Possibly this Harriet Bryant died between 1848 and 1850 census, and Arrana M. Campbell then appeared in the household with John H. Campbell, in the 1850 census." [4] 1.12.5 George H. Campbell m. Mary Ann [4] 1830 Nelson. Co. Census George H. Campbell , s/o Henry and Sarah, s/o George and Caty 1 male 30-40 George H. Campbell 2 females 20-30 Mary Ann (from 1835 court doc) Is she P. Drake , m. 11-24-1817 Nelson Co. ?? P. aka Polly, aka Mary? George H. Campbell is in house 653 on 1850 Amh. Co. Census age 65, with wife Mary age 65 daughter Elizabeth, age 50. They are between Benjamin Campbell & Elizabeth Campbell. 1.12.7 Catherine Campbell, b. 1795, in 1816 she married Cornelius Campbell, s/o George Campbell and Elizabeth, s/o George and Caty. Cornelius Campbell died in 1840, and in the 1860 census Catherine Campbell is listed as living next door to her older brother John H. Campbell at Rose Mill, Nelson Co VA. She has living with her a Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820, who is either her daughter, or a widowed daughter in law. They also have a young boy named George M. Campbell b. 1846. Is this George M. Campbell the son of Sarah W. Campbell? Who is his father? In the 1880 census there is a George M. Campbell listed in Nelson Co married to a Margaret b. 1848, with kids: Cary Lee b. 1874, Thomas W. b. 1875, Daniel W. b. 1877, and James B. b. 1879 This could also possibly be the G. M. Campbell, who in 1888 directory is listed as an Undertaker at Rose Mill, VA. ARE THERE any RESEARCHERS out there working on that family group??? Catherine and Cornelius Campbell are said to have the following children: Shannon D. Campbell 1.12.7.1 William H. Campbell 1.12.7.2 b. 1818 Benjamin Campbell 1.12.7.3 George T. Campbell 1.12.7.4 b. 1824 d. 1856 Arrana M. Campbell 1.12.7.5 b. 1829 Maurice P. Campbell 1.12.7.6 Sarah W. Campbell 1.12.7.7 b. 1820. 1.12.8 Nancy Campbell b. 9-1-1794, married Joel HITE (Hight) 1815 in Nelson Co, VA. 1.12.9 Susannah Campbell, married William A. Hite (Hight) 1.12.10 Sarah "Sally" F. Campbell, married John Allen 1.12.11 Elizabeth Campbell, as of 1835 not married.

William George Campbell Taken from the Nelson Co. Heritage Book (middle name may have been George) Campbell, b. Cr. 1754 in Albermarle Co., VA. Fought in the Rev War (America). He is not mentioned in his Father's Will, but his older brother John Campbell does identify him as a brother, so this serves to establish his identity as a son of George Campbell and Catherine, one of 13 children, in Amherst Co VA. 3. Hello, I am hoping a few old hands may be able to provide much needed information. The 7th Earl of Argyle, went to Spain and within his retinue were the three son's of the McLea Baron of Linsaig, from Cowal. These son's took refuge in Ulster, after their time of service and never returned to Scotland. I believe that the 7th Earl, also never returned to Scotland, ending his day's in London. Is any further information known about the relationship the McLea family of Linsaig had to both the 6th and 7th Earls ? And if any further information is known about the three son's once in Ireland? All the best! Grant South FSA Scot.

    3. This is something that I have always wondered about so here goes the silly question. Is there a website where you can read or find out what information that has been submitted and accepted by the DAR or do you have to go to their library to find this information? It seems that at one time Ancestry.com had some DAR information but I didn't become a member when they started to charge to read the information that had been donated to them.
