Hi Hilda, I sure would like to see if Earl would take the DNA test! I visited him about 2 years ago and he's the one who told me that at one time they had a list of who is buried (even the unmarked graves) where E. J. and Matilda are buried. My great grandparents Ellis and Mary Jane are buried there too. I live in Hampton and try to get to the mountains every few months but have been kind of limited since I started babysitting my 2 grandsons, 7 and 8 months old. I might try to contact one of my cousins who lives up that way to see if he might Earl. Do you know the cost of the DNA test? Maybe several of us could go together and cover the cost if Earl will do it. It would be great to see if we connect with any of the other Campbell families in Amherst and Nelson. One of my aunts told me that there was a picture of E.J. and Matilda Campbell in our old homeplace that washed away during the flood of 1969. Don't know if anyone else has a picture, if so would sure like to see it. If anyone in our family has one it might be Ellis Coffey, son of Susie and Leslie, but I don't know if anyone keeps in touch with him. Keep me posted. Sylvia
Hi Sylvia and Lily - I have to jump in here because this is my line as well. I descend down from Francis and Isabel Campbell Joel and Nancy Coffey Campbell Reuben Lee Campbell William Frank Campbell Minnie Beatrice Campbell Lowery Sarah Virginia Lowery Palmer And me Hilda Palmer Austin There is a living male Campbell - Earl Campbell that is the son of Richard Campbell son of Oscar Parker Campbell son of (also brother to Ellis that is Sylvia's line) Edmond Joshua Campbell son of Francis son of Francis Since my direct male stops with my Great Grandfather William Frank Campbell, I have often thought of going and asking if we could get a sample from Earl Campbell that still lives on Campbell's Mountain in Nelson County. Up for this adventure, Sylvia? Maybe we could then connect them with the other Campbells that lived nearby there? Are there any others on this list that come down from the Francis & Isabel Campbell line? Another question, does anyone have a picture of Edmond Joshua Campbell - 1822- 1896? Those Thaxton Campbell's are mine. Looking for more current information on this line. Van Thaxton Campbell, b: 1917. Martinelli is my mother's maiden name. Martha, I have a land record of "Polly Campbell" with a list of Campbell heirs from the Probate Court in Laurens. I'll find it and scan it for you. Another of John and Mary Campbell's children is Elijah. Elijah Cammel first appears as witness for his father John Cammel when he sells to George Adair 2a. & 17 rods for $8.50 including the house where George Adair now lives. In 1820 Elijah Campbell is in Laurens Co., SC census, he is between 26 and 45 years of age. He has 3 females to 10, 1 female 10/16, 1 female 16/26. We estimate his birth before 1783. In 1830 Elijah Campbell appears in Spartanburg Co., SC. He is between 50 & 60 years of age. There is one male 30/40 years of age, one female 10/15, one female 15/20, two females 20/30. The other Campbell's in this area are: James, James S., Jason, William Are all of these Campbell's related? Is this the same Elijah from Laurens? In 1840 Elijah Campbell is between 50 and 60, one female 40/50. The other Campbell's in this area are: And , Eph., John, Mary, Samuel, Thomas, Jacen Cammel Are these Campbell's related? Elijah was on a tax list in Spartanburg in 1843, nothing after this. Does anyone have any information on this Elijah or other Campbell's in Spartanburg area? Martha
Folks, As a researcher with the same brick wall for over thirty years, having followed countless undocumented trails, spent untold hours researching posted but incorrect lineages, and spent unknown assets on materials and postage, I would urge very strongly anyone doing research on a line as vast and complicated as the Campbells to support the DNA Project. If you can't be the one submitting the sample, offer to underwrite a portion of the cost, however small, of someone willing. There is a very real chance you will find something unique in your markers to guide you in the direction needed to find that single document to overcome your wall or at least to connect you to the proper group with whom to exchange information. I figure I could have saved about two decades of work for a couple hundred dollars. Housework even pays better than that. According to " Descendants of Capt. Angus Campbell of Laurens, South Carolina", written by Thomas Campbell , Angus had the following children: John who died in 1781, Angus Jr., Lewellen, Patsy, Robert, Jane and Sarah. Does this mean the other Campbell's living next to John Campbell in 1790 belong to this John Campbell family? 2 John Campbell's found on page 73 I assume one Sr. and one JR. The Sr. Campbell is my line. Marcus Campbell found on page 73 Samuel Campbell found on page 75 William Campbell found on page 75 and one Mary Campbell found on page 75. Hello Earl, We have a Willis Campbell, who married in 1827 in Nelson Co VA to Hannah Painter. We have never found an ancestral line for this WILLIS, for all we know he came into Central VA from anywhere. He does not seem to fit into our Central VA Campbell families of Amherst and Nelson Counties. When you listed a WILLIS Campbell b. 1806, this birth year would be a good possible match to someone who married in 1827. Also, the name WILLIS is not commonly used in the Campbell families our the time frame in Amherst and Nelson Counties VA. Do you have any further info on this Willis? The Willis who married Hannah seems to have died while young, because he left his wife with young kids in the census of Nelson Co VA. My father was Van Thaxton Campbell d: 1977. I don't find the Thaxton name in his Campbell line but could be thru marriage. His father was Ervin Haywood Campbell, and his father Hugh Campbell. Haven't found any recent information from early 1900's. Christine Campbell Martinelli
