Phyllis' You are on the Rootsweb site where all the Campbells in the world are researched..... The Campbell-kids Yahoo Group, the site that is devoted to George and Caty Campbell is a private website that is controlled by Rosemary Bell. Of course we always have included Henry Campbell, Neil, Joel and Ambrose, and all the siblings of Henry; Lawrence and his family, etc and any and all Campbells within Amherst and other areas around the area. Perhaps we should allow Rosemary to define what her website is devoted to since she pays the bill. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 12, 2010 19:13 Subject: [Campbell] CALLING ALL CAMPBELL'S !!!!!!!! > > > Some of the responses posted may give the impression that this is a closed > site for one only Campbell.....George and Caty Campbell and their > descendants. Hi Susan; 1835 is a tough time in Ontario to locate folks, Census records aren't much help and it's before civil registration got going as you probably already know. If you can find it there is a book called "The Campbells and Other Glengarry-Stormont and Harrington Pioneers" by R.B Campbell pub 1983 that might be helpful. HI Susan, Yes I am on Ancestry. No Gallaghers so far in my line but that doesn't mean much as I'm constantly finding branches no one knew about or lost track of. I'm working on a number of lines right now with the main surnames including: Campbell, Blackwood, Parminter, Graham, States, McDougall, Putnam, Hadley, Ingles, Deeprose, Bull, Losie, Wright, Cooper and Tibbles. The Campbell line I'm working on so far includes Blackwood, Pegues, McDougall and Parminter at the moment. Susan; George and Caty Campbell do have their own list. Its Campbell-kids a Yahoo group and the Moderator is Rosemary Bell. And there are about 180 members on this list and it has nothing to do with the Campbellrootsweb list. other than members of the Campbell-kids list also belong to the rootsweb list.. I am not the admin to the Campbell-kids yahoo group but I hope this satisfies your question. So if you are working one only one family , maybe you could create a list just for them?. I am also looking for Campbell's from Ontario, and my James Campbell may be related to the Campbells of Martintown Ontario. James Campbell was born in Canada about 1835, then came to Michigan in the 1860's. I can't find anything about his time in Canada, no parents no siblings, zip... Debra, "John Campbell born c1784 in Scotland, a weaver by trade...." Many men emigrated from Scotland and Ireland, trained as professional weavers, about the time your John came to this continent. There is a well-known and well-documented John Campbell, trained in Paisley, who was a prolific weaver in Ontario during this same period. I don't know if he is the same John for whom you are looking but his weaving records have been preserved and might contain familial information. "Keep Me Warm One Night: Early Handweaving in Eastern Canada", Burnham and Burnham, 1972, Univ. of Toronto Press, has several pages on this John Campbell. Since he lived and worked in New York for a while, he is also listed in weaving histories about the United States. "The book "The Campbells of Martintown...." I'm not related to these Campbells and therefore am not familiar with the book you wrote about above but if it discusses your John's weaving in any way, I would be interested in how to obtain a copy. I'm happy to scan and send you the information I have if you think it would help you. Jan Thomas Textile Historian
Unfortunately the book "The Campbells of Martintown..." is mainly a genealogy of the various Campbell families in the area of Martintown, Glengarry Co, Ontario and gives very little information on the particular family I'm looking for and nothing further about his weaving. I suspect because none of the family was left in the area at the time the book was created. There may have been descendants of the daughter Janett but so far I've not been able to locate a marriage or death record for her. It would be interesting to learn more about his weaving and where he was trained. I'll keep working on it. Debra; Since no one else has stepped up to the plate to respond, let me inform you of our Campbell-kids program, our commitment and objective. Our goal is to develop a FTM file on the family of George and Caty Campbell of Amherst County Va. Our George Campbell was born in about 1720 and died in 1791. He and his wife Catherine had 13 children that we are attempting to document their lineage, So far our research has not strayed from this specific family which is quite earlier than your John Campbell born in Scotland in 1784. Regrets, but I see no connection what so ever. Good luck in your hunt. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debra Parminter" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 11, 2010 14:03 Subject: [Campbell] Campbells of Martintown Ontario > I've been monitoring the list for some time and hoping someone out there > can > help. > > John Campbell born c1784 in Scotland, a weaver by trade, member of the > Kirk > of Scotland, married to Grace unknown surname also born in Scotland. Thanks Lynden; My folks were only in Canada as far as I know at this point, not going to say they didn't wander though. I should have been a bit more informative in my original post, apologies. Martintown is in Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada. Maureen I hope not, I understood it was a general Campbell List.
Is this list dedicated only to the George and Caty Campbell family project? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lynden Harris Sent: Sunday, July 11, 2010 5:10 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Campbell] Campbells of Martintown Ontario Debra; Since no one else has stepped up to the plate to respond, let me inform you of our Campbell-kids program, our commitment and objective. I've been monitoring the list for some time and hoping someone out there can help. John Campbell born c1784 in Scotland, a weaver by trade, member of the Kirk of Scotland, married to Grace unknown surname also born in Scotland. They had 2 children that we know of Neil Campbell b. 1831 in Martintown, d. 1892 in Barkerville BC and Janett born c1832 in Martintown. The family is listed on the 1851 census for Martintown and the 1861 census for Charlottenburg twp just John and Grace are listed, after that I've not been able to locate them yet. The book "The Campbells of Martintown...." indicates there may have been another son but so far we've not located anything to confirm this. Neil's line we have, he married Barbara Blackwood of Franklin Que in 1862 and while the family remained in Martintown for some years Neil travelled to BC several times to the gold fields before bringing his family to Victoria BC sometime between 1881 and 1891. Neil and Barbara had a family of five children who all came and settled in BC as well. Any suggestions on locating further information on John, his wife Grace or their daughter Janett would be appreciated.
