Yes, Prunedale is in the northern part of Monterey County. Highway 101 bisects the area of rolling hills known as Prunedale just before Salinas. There are at least two newspapers in which the obituary would have appeared--The Monterey County Herald (published in Monterey) and The Californian (published in Salinas). I have old copies of The Herald stored in a shed but it will take me some time before I have a chance to sort through them. I would suggest contacting the newspapers directly since the obituary is a fairly recent one.
