Okay, unless Carmel is Robert's and not Rosa's daughter by a previous marriage. Carmel's marriage to John occurred about 1891. Rosa and Robert were married in about 1886. Were they living in Monterey county at that time? Next step would be to try and find a record of the two marriages. Rosa's first married name and Carmel's maiden name, assuming she didn't adopt Robert's surname should be the same and hopefully will be that of Rosa's first husband. You might also check 1910 census for Robert & Rosa and see how many marriages they each have had, assuming that it shows in census. I'm fairly sure that LDS library in Salt Lake City and local family history centers have access to some pre-1905 marriage records for Monterey County. Not sure what years are involved, but it's worth a try. Just found that FHL Film #1290904 has a copy of volume B register of marriages for Monterey County, CA. FHL film #1290898 has the Montery County index to marriage licenses (book 1) for the years 1893-1906. Haven't checked on exactly what else is available.
