Helena was born in India where her father was a missionary. She and her mother Helena "Nellie" (Johnson) King moved to the U. s. and lived on a farm owned by her brother and sister-in-law, Alex abd Alta (Cheatham) Johnson. Helena and Charlie have a son James Frederick or Frederick James. He was known as Jimmy as a child. Jim is a Vietnam-era veteran of the Marines.
