Cancio Leonardo M. Cancio, a prisoner of war during World War II, died Friday at his Salinas home. He was 82. Born July 31, 1907, in Nueva Ecuja, the Phillipines, Mr. Cancio had lived in Monterey County for 45 years. Along with 23 others, Mr. Cancio was a candidate in the 1972 Marina City Council elections but was defeated. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Cancio retired in 1957 after 32 years of service. During World War II, he was a prisoner of war in Bataan, the Philippines, and survived by the Bataan Death march in 1942. Mr. Cancio was a member of the Survivors of Bataan & Corregidor, the Fil-American Civic League of Salinas, the Filipino Community of Salinas, the Fil-American Legion Post 652, the Caballeros Dimas Alang of Salinas, the National Association of French and American Vererans of the Wars 1914-18 and 1939-45 and the Lions Club Eye Foundation of California and Nevada. He was president of the Philippine Scouts and U.S. Veterans' Association in Salinas at the time of his death, and he was commander of the Ex-POW's of Monterey County. Mr. Cancio is survived by his wife, Carmen, three sons, Capt. Len Cancio of Fort Ord, Leonard of Salinas and Rudi of Stockton; two daughter, Eva Tulud and Rita Madronio, both of Salinas; one sister, Feliza Manansala of Pam Panga, the Philippines; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Ritualistic guarding by the Caballeros de Dimas Alang will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Healy Mortuary Chapel. Recitation of the rosary is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Entombment with full military honors will follow in the Garden of Memories.
