Hello Mary -- You can request birth & death info from volunteers in California by sending a request to mailto:CA-DEATH-INDEX-D-request@rootsweb.com & put the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the msg (leave subject blank). The CADI is the CAlifornia Death Index & the CABI is the CAlifornia Birth Index. The single list, just mentioned, covers both. These indices both begin in 1905 & go to present. From 1905 to 1939 the records are bound in books (I believe) but from 1940 on the info in on microfiche &, now, on CDs (VERY expensive -- $10 per year!). There is also a way to search online but you have to do it each year. That address is http://amaty.simplenet.com/gen/ca/ca_.htm & you then choose whether you wish birth or death records & follow the prompts. The volunteers I mentioned either search at their local libraries or some have the CDs at home. You can also request a copy of obits. They are a wealth of knowledge & have assisted me numerous times. Each time with marvelous info above & beyond what I had hoped for! For info regarding Historical Societies in California, go to http://cyndislist.com/ca.htm . This is the page on Cyndi's List for California. Near the bottom of the website there will be a large "box" with links to each county. Choose whichever county you desire & the website should then tell you what Historical Societies are available for that area. If email addresses are avail, they will be listed as well as the "snail mail" & physical addresses. Oh, to determine what county a certain city is in go to http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi & put in the city & 2-digit postal state code. Hope this has helped. Good luck in your research! William Johnson died in Pacific Grove 5 October 1928. His wife Delia J. died either in Hollister or Pacific Grove in 1898. Both were buried in Hollister. My question, what newspaper would have carried the obituary or obituaries if Delia died there also. Is there a local genealogy society that would look up this obituary for a donation? Thank you all.
