He was Joshua Wood, 79, native of that area. He died in the San Luis Obispo hospital on New Year's Day following a brief illness. With other members of his family, Wood pioneered in Southern Monterey County, living in one of its most remote areas three miles from a mailbox and without a telephone until last year. Winters the Woods packed in groceries on horseback. He attended the old Pleyto school in early days. Wood is survived by his widow, Bessie, and numerous nieces, nephews and step-children. Two brothers and two sisters of this pioneer family preceded him in death. They were sons of Job Wood, prominent in the establishment of early Monterey County activities. Though Wood worked for a short time in the San Joaquin Valley he spent most of his life near Pleyto, never leaving the state.
