    1. [CAMONTER-L] Cypress Lawn Cemetery??
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Lorraine, I've been looking at a Santa Cruz County map, and there is an IOOF Cemetery in Soquel, but no Cypress Lawn. Santa Cruz has Home of Peace Cemetery, Evergreen Cemetery, IOOF Cemetery, and Holy Cross Cemetery. The Aptos area has Calvary Cemetery. Felton and Boulder Creek each have an unnamed cemetery . Watsonville has St. Francis Cemetery and Pajaro Valley Memorial Park Cemetery. 3. The Soberanes name goes way back in Monterey County. One of the original 79 land grants was to Mariano Soberanes. In 1851, the following Soberanes owned land in Monterey County: Mariano Soberanes had an assessment of $10,693.00; $500.00 (this listing indicates that Mariano died before 1881); and $21,547.00 (Still living in 1881). Guade Soberanes had an assessment of $7,000.00 (Still living in 1881). Telciano Soberanes had an assessment of $23,880.50 (Still living in 1881). The rate of taxation was twenty-five (25) cents on the $100.00. >My greatgrandmother was Amada Soberanes. Trying to fill in a whole bunch of >empty family files. 3. I found a Maria Isidora Vallejo baptized May 15, 1792 at Mission Santa Clara to Ygnacio Vallejo and Maria Antonia Lugo, record #2102. I show 3 other children born to this couple. 1794, 1796, 1798. I don't know if this next information is the same person, but you can look up the record to find out. I found: Isadora Vallejo married Mariano Soberanes on August 14, 1815 at Mission San Carlos de Monterey, record #829. (The record should list her parents). Also have: Isidora Vallejo died August 15, 1850, Mission San Carlos, record #2769. (The record should list her spouse) Tayberry At 04:12 PM 1/14/99 -0800, James C. 1. [CAMONTER-L] SOLEDAD CEMETERY
    2. Larry Kuttner
    3. Earlier today someone on one of the lists I subscribe to asked about a cemetery at Soledad, CA. At that time I mentioned that one of my ancestors had been buried there in 1919. Since then I opened my mail and found a self-purchased gift from Santa in the form of a Thomas Bros. map book on Monterey County, CA. Page 289A shows a map of Soledad and says that on Metz Rd. there is a Soledad Cemetery. On line telephone directory shows following: Soledad Cemetery District 831-678-3491 1711 Metz Rd Soledad, CA 93960-2805 Think this is the place that was being looked for. Sorry, but I managed to lose the original message. Larry K.

No cemetery name is given so it may have been a cemetery near and not at Soledad or maybe the cemetery no longer exists. She was an old lady at the time and was living with one of her daughters in Willits. Larry K.

    3. Edward, The USGS township information listing for Monterey County lists a couple of townships in Soledad, Monterey County- (off the Monterey County Page at <http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/montecty.htm> )- however, the USGS listing of cemetaries in Monterey County doesn't list any in Soledad. Using these two pages together, looking at Latitude and Longitude, it looks to me like Greenfield Cemetary in Greenfield, and Gonzales Cemetary in Palo Escrito Peak are the two closest cemetaries. It is very possible that the USGS listing does not contain all of the cemetaries in the county, but I find it a good place to start. (USGS home page http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/). I haven't spent much time with their website, but someone at the US GenWeb's Tombstone Project may be able to help (http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/)- No one has signed up for Monterey County, but the California coordinators name is listed- she might be another lead. good luck- Joel Edward A. 3. Is the father of Robert WHITE named Thomas WHITE? Thomas White was also known as Tomas BLANCO. He owned one of the smallest land grants in Monterey County. During the late 1800s, there was a post office at Blanco (1873-1941). >From Monterey County Place Names: Tom White, who deserted ship in Monterey in 1840, and who was known as Tomas Blanco to his Spanish-speaking neighbors, received on August 24, 1844, a small grant on Salinas River. His place became known as Blanco Crossing, and in the Fall of 1872 the name was given to the Southern Pacific Station. Thomas White, or Tomas Blanco, died around 1850. In 1886 Blanco was "a small town of 100 inhabitants." Today nothing exists of the post office, school, or general store that once existed at the intersection of Blanco Road and Cooper Road.
