    3. This has just been added to the Sanchez File. Encarnacion Ortega's daughter, Virginia Crane, married a man, Eugene Munch, when she was 13, then was beaten and abandoned in Europe, pregnant. Munch wrote a letter to her in 1878 which included this paragraph "Would to God I had married an Irish or any other kind of girl and lived happy, instead of marrying such a Mongrel mixture as you are." 3. I have uploaded the first 13 chapters of my story, The Sanchez File, to my home page, America Hurrah, with photos and rancho maps. It's a story of murder, conspiracy and fraud against Encarnacion Ortega of San Juan Bautista, Monterey County, California. She was the widow of Jose Maria Sanchez, who drowned in the Pajaro River, Christmas Eve, 1852, leaving her and her five children an estate valued at $300 thousand. Easy pickings for ex-soldiers of the NY Volunteers in Monterey. I would appreciate any comments. I put in everything concerning the probate; testimony, depositions etc. If there is too much detail please let me know. Tnx- Bill Select Sanchez File at http://www.americahurrah.com/

    3. Lorraine -- There is one grocery store in Spreckles. It is vey old which makes me tend to think it was probably there in the eary 1900s. There is a Fire Station (don't know how long it has been there), a post office and, more recently, some other small businesses (mostly farm oriented, if I remember correctly). Hey, why not CALL the post office & ask about the store? I lived in Spreckles a little over 10 years ago but was born & raised in Salinas & the Salinas Valley so my knowledge of Spreckles is not real specific. My dad was a farmer so I made many trips to the sugar beet factory, however, that gave me no knowledge of the residents of the town (which is VERY small -- it is exactly 1 mile walking completely around the town & coming back to the same point!). I had a real good friend that lived there since childhood but she has since moved into town. As far as the Steinbeck Library, check to see if they have an on-line address (or an 800#). Perhaps for a small donation some kind reader of this list, or a member of the Historical Society, would do a look-up. Hope all this helps. 1. [CAMONTER-L] Cypress Lawn & burials
    2. Richard & Carolyn
    3. Many thanks to each and all of you who so kindly responded to my inquiry regarding Cypress Lawn cemetery, and especially to Dorothy for volunteering to check in Colma. Just FYI - It appears that "Cypress Lawn Cemetery" is definately in Colma, and definately is not in Montery or Santa Cruz counties. No such place there. Several folks kindly responded with information about "long distance burials". Seems many folks lived and died in one place, but were buried in another with no known connection. That was news to me, and seems kinda odd, but, oh well. One person even related that her family lived & died in San Francisco, but is buried in Santa Cruz - the reverse of my situation! thanks again to all of you for the help! 1. [CAMONTER-L] Cypress Lawn Cemetery??
    2. Richard & Carolyn
    3. Hi to all, Am trying to find out if there was/is a "Cypress Lawn Cemetery" in the Monterey Co/Santa Cruz Co area? The only one I can find on GNIS is the one in Colma. But I now have 3 folks from Soquel (died 1907, 1910, 1912) whose death certificates in Santa Cruz Co say they are buried in "Cypress Lawn". They were in Soquel/Castroville/Watsonville forever - starting 1870s, with no known connection to SF. Maybe there's an old Cypress Lawn somewhere in Santa Cruz or Monterey counties? Any info would be great. Thanks in advance, Carolyn Carter Johnson (mailto:rhunterg@ix.netcom.com)
