    1. [CAMONTER-L] 1850 Monterey/Santa Cruz Census Records
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, I made my own personal copies of the actual 1850 Census Records for Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. Some of the film was not too good, occasionally the handwriting is a little tough to read, and naturally the spelling sometimes leaves a great deal to be desired. However, I am willing to do lookups for people who beleive their ancestors were in the Motnerey Bay area in 1850. Please include as much of the name as you know (first and last), and any family members as well as state or country of birth (sometimes it's easier to find a person by their nativity). Age can vary greatly, particularly if they were Spanish. My ancestors have a wide range of birth years, depending on which census year I am looking at (I have four possible birth years for my g-g-grandmother alone). Anita

If you contact the Monterey County Historical Society at the Boronda Adobe (see web site above), they should be able to put you in touch with a Boronda Descendents organization. You could also try contacting normhat@aol.com, who is a Boronda descendent. --Good luck --Sheila P. 1. Re: [CAMONTER-L] CROWDER, WALTER LEE
    2. Norma: I found your obituary yesterday, as well as a funeral notice. Walter died in Gonzales, California (17 miles south of Salinas), and was buried at the Salinas IOOF Cemetary. I also got Walter Crowder's death certificate from the Monterey County Recorder's Office. If you will email me your address, I will send these to you. The death certificate cost me $8.00 and the microfilm obit copies were $.25 each. Please send me $8.50 at the return address on the envelope. No one else with the surname CROWDER died in Monterey County from 1936 to 12/98, according to their death index. I did find a listing in the marriage index for a Roy V. CROWDER and Clothilda N. GONCALVES, dated 2 December 1907. (Book 6, pg. 87) Are these yours? --Sheila P. He worked in the lettuce and produce fields. I do remember that because that's why he was coming to get us. There was more work out there then in Hunt County, Texas. I knew he died in 1940 or 1941 but I wasn't sure which. When the war started (12/7/41), I was in the 1st grade and we lived in the next house down the road. We must have moved there between the time he died and the war started. All else I remember is that it was Salinas, CA. Probably not the city but in the surrounding area. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net and ; sj@censusmicrofilm.com I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". 1. Re: [CAMONTER-L] Re: James Francis CADI
    2. Jill: I found the obit for James E. FRANCIS today. It was in the 2 January 1985 issue of the Salinas Californian. Here is what it said, and I will send it to you if you email me your address. "James E. FRANCIS of 348 Iris Drive, Salinas, died Thursday at Skyline Convalescent Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 74. A native of Ponca, Neb., he had lived in Salinas nine years. He was a retired truck driver for Fruehauf Trucking and was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. He is survived by two daughters, Debbie HERR of Salinas and Charlene FREY of Buena Park; a step-daughter Beverly MALONEY of Salinas; a son, Franklin FRANCIS of Anaheim; a step-son, Thomas KNATCHER of Salinas; a brother, Leo FRANCIS of Seattle, Wash., and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie FRANCIS, in 1983. Memorial services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Wendell J. BROWN and Rev. Russell JOHNSON, pastor and associate pastor of the church respectively, officiating. Private inurnment is to be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Healey Mortuary." In the Recorder's office I found the death date of his wife, Marie Catherine FRANCIS. She died 27 April 1983. I found no death for Clarence FRANCIS, but I see from the postings today that he died in Los Angeles County. I found a lot of other FRANCIS's in the Monterey County Death Index 1/63 through 12/98, but I don't know who else might be related since he apparently only lived there for about nine years. I found a marriage for a James Edward FRANCIS to Colleen Ann ROMERO, 31 July 1962, in the Marriage Index. (License #0074 0126). Don't know if this could be one of his marriages. There were also 3 marriages for an Urban Leo FRANCIS or FRANCIS, Jr. in this Index. Also, I looked up all of his local children and step-children in the Monterey County phone book under the Salinas listings, and found none of them for sure except that there are two MALONEY listings for males. Good luck. --Sheila P.
