    1. Re: [CAMONTER] Pacific Grove
    2. Mary: The newspapers which covered the Monterey/Pacific Grove area are located in the Monterey Public Library on microfilm. I will be there next week and can look up obits for you. Do you have one for William? As far as Delia, do you have an exact date of death? If not, it will be more difficult. During that time period the newspapers may be weekly, and deaths or articles about them are not always listed in one place, so the whole newspaper must be searched. Have you tried to find Delia in the pre-1905 death records of either county? If not, I can look at those for you. --Sheila P. 3. I'm not related, just a volunteer. Checked the CA death index for Joaquin Valencia and could not find that person dying in CA from 1990-1997. Do you think he is still alive? If not, do you have any idea when he was last heard from? I have access to CADI 1940-97 and could look at other years for you. 1. [CAMONTER] McMenamin Obituary
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, Sometime back I saw requests for information about the McMenamin surname. THe following excerpts appeared in today's [Friday, April 14, 2000] "The Monterey County Herald": Actor Emmett dies in N.Y. Born McMenamin in Monterey, his wife was also an actress Robert EMMETT, born Robert McMENAMIN and known during his screen and stage career as Bob Emmett, died Satrday, April 8, after surgery for acute appendicitas at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. He was 78. At the time of his death, Emmett lived with his wife, the actress Kim Hunter … in the Greenwich Village apartment they occupied since the birth of their son, Sean, in 1954. They were married in 1951, after meeting as actors in the road company of "Two Blind Mice," starring Melvyn Douglas. A playwright and actor with many television credits, Emmett is perhaps best known as the head writer for the 1962-63 Emmy award-winning satirical television news show "That Was The Week That Was." The son of former Monterey Mayor and longtime Monterey County clerk, Emmett McMenamin, he was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Monterey. … …In changing his name for the theater he chose his fsther's first name as his surname, something his brother GEORGE had done when he was in radio. … Emmett is survived by his wife, Kim Hunter; two children, Kathryn and Sean emmett, both of Stamford, Conn.; six grandchildren; and a brother, Emmett McMenamin Jr. of Del Ray Oaks [CA]. NOTE: The obituary details Emmett's entire educational, military, and professional career. If anyone is interested in the entire obituary, with photo, let me know. Hope this helps someone, Anita C. 3. Friends, My great aunt Elaine CARTER (1907-1993) and her mother, (Marie) Louise RICE CARTER (1876-1945) lived in Carmel in the 1930's and 1940's, and perhaps as early as the late 20's. Elaine worked for the post office, and may have been postmistress there toward the end of that time. Elaine married George O'NEIL and they moved to Camas, WA, near Portland, OR, after some time in Chicago. I think Elaine may also have been a waitress in and around Carmel. She was a bright and interesting woman; I only got to know her in 1975. I would love to know more about them if there is anyone here who might know of them. 3. Posted on: Monterey County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Monterey?read=273 Surname: HILL, PECK, DICKENSON ------------------------- I have a printed copy of the biograpy of "Hon. W. J. HILL" printed in "Biographical Notices of Residents" in "History of Monterey County, California, 1881". Perhaps this biography is familiar to our host. Per the biography: "W. J. HILL is the editor and proprietor of the Salinas Index, and present State Senator from the Sixth Senatorial District, embracing Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. He is of Scotch parentage, and was born on the farm of his father, John HILL, near Prescott, Canada West, in the year 1840. He is the eldest of 10 sons and 3 daughters, all of whom, together with his parents are still alive. He came to California by water in 1862, arriving in San Francisco in April of that year. He went to the Cariboo (B.C.) mines and penetrated the wilds of Alaska the same summer, returning to California in the fall." "...his wife being Miss Belle PECK, the first child of American parents born at Stockton...whose grandfather, the late Col. G. D. DICKENSON, in 1847, erected in the town of Monterey the first brick house ever built in California." "They have one child, a bright little boy of seven summers..." I will send a copy to anyone who gives me their snail mail address to mail it to.

    3. Posted on: Monterey County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Monterey?read=272 Surname: McKINNON, HEBBRON, WALKER, SOTO ------------------------- I have a printed copy of "Biographical Notices of Residents" from "History of Monterey California, 1881". The biography is of "Duncan McKINNON, born in York Co., Canada West, June 15, 1836. His parents were natives of Scotland, and had emigrated from there in May, 1835." I will mail a copy to whomever gives me a snail mail address to send it to. The biography includes Duncan McKINNON's travel to British Columbia hoping to strike it rich in gold mining, his falling ill with smallpox, the threat of murder by Indians falling victim to the imported disease, a return to Canada to a changed home. Per the biography: Duncan McKINNON eventually settled in Monterey Co. with his brother, Anthony, on a parcel rented from J. M. SOTO's Santa Rita Rancho in 1867. By 1874 with the knowledge of farming gained on their mother's farm in Canada after their father's death, the brothers bought 1100 acres of the Sausal ranch for $60,000. The biography states: Alice Maud HEBBRON was 2nd daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. R. HEBBRON of Natividad, Monterey Co., formerly of London, England. On Jan. 1, 1877, Alice married Duncan McKINNON and on that date at the same place Miss Ida C. HEBBRON, eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. R. HEBBRON, married J. M. WALKER of Canada. Per the biography by the year of print: Children born to Duncan and Alice McKINNON: Duncan Florent McKINNON born Dec. 6, 1877 and William Elmer McKINNON born May 12, 1880

    1. Re: [CAMONTER] cemetaries south of King City (in Monterey Co.)
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Rich, I checked the Bradley telephone directory and there is no cemetery listed. That does not mean that there might not be a cemetery, just that it is not listed in the phone book. Monterey County has a lot of little cemeteries known only to the locals. I would suggest calling the Bradley Post Office at 1-831-472-2377. Most of the little post offices in the county are run by long time county residents. They are usually very knowledgable about their local area. Another possible source of localized information is the Bradley Branch Library at 1-831-472-9407. Again, the library staff would be local residents and would know if there is/was a cemetery in the Bradley area, and what happened to it, if anything. Between those two sources, you might even be able to connect up with someone who remembers your ancestors, where they lived, etc. Many South County residents have been there for generations, often on the land their ancestors originally homesteaded. Hope this helps, Anita C. Monterey County Dorman wrote: > > I am new to the list. I am trying to find burial site of Charles Hagan (d > 1898) and Sarah Kilborn Hagan (d Dec 1902).
