To determine the CITY of death you will need to order the death certificate or find a volunteer to transcribe the information at the county recorder's office. Here's the info site for CA vital records: http://vitalrec.com/ca.html Make sure you visit the link for the county of death listed - quite often it's much faster to deal with the county for a copy of the death certificate than it is with the state. Hi Jennifer, Did a search of the new CA birth index. Chase is exactly 3 days younger than my son who turned 18 in March. He's probably a senior in high school and getting reading for graduation. Mine has his license and has already been solicited by the army and navy so I guess it's okay to share his listing from the birth index since he is considered of age for everything except alcohol consumption. Hello Mary -- You can request birth & death info from volunteers in California by sending a request to mailto:CA-DEATH-INDEX-D-request@rootsweb.com & put the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the msg (leave subject blank). The CADI is the CAlifornia Death Index & the CABI is the CAlifornia Birth Index. The single list, just mentioned, covers both. These indices both begin in 1905 & go to present. From 1905 to 1939 the records are bound in books (I believe) but from 1940 on the info in on microfiche &, now, on CDs (VERY expensive -- $10 per year!). There is also a way to search online but you have to do it each year. That address is http://amaty.simplenet.com/gen/ca/ca_.htm & you then choose whether you wish birth or death records & follow the prompts. The volunteers I mentioned either search at their local libraries or some have the CDs at home. You can also request a copy of obits. They are a wealth of knowledge & have assisted me numerous times. Each time with marvelous info above & beyond what I had hoped for! For info regarding Historical Societies in California, go to http://cyndislist.com/ca.htm . This is the page on Cyndi's List for California. Near the bottom of the website there will be a large "box" with links to each county. Choose whichever county you desire & the website should then tell you what Historical Societies are available for that area. If email addresses are avail, they will be listed as well as the "snail mail" & physical addresses. Oh, to determine what county a certain city is in go to http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi & put in the city & 2-digit postal state code. Hope this has helped. Good luck in your research! Karen: I can do a death certificate transcription and look for an obit for Blaine Byal for you. I will try to get to this next week, but please be patient. I am backed up with lookups. Since I don't know where in the County he died, I will have to check the death certificate first, and I may not get to the Recorder's Office until late in the week. I have about 20 death certs and obits to post to various lists right now, so it may be awhile before you hear from me. --Sheila P.
