Her brother Frederick was also born in Monterey but in 1872. Her father was Frederick Ray born about 1829 in Nantucket Mass. Frederick Ray's ancestors were Nantucket whalers and the family had been on Nantucket Island since about 1697. Frederick died in Monterey in 1913 but is buried in the Mother Lode town of Jackson. My great grandmother's first name was possible Ewina or Euina or ?, but it did appear to start with an E according to the 1880 Monterey census. Also would greatly appreciate any information on my great grandmother.

Dottie: I was able to transcribe Maud Weck's death certificate, but have not gotten to Otto's yet. I'm sorry, as I know that is the one you are really interested in! However, they have a different procedure at the Recorder's office for certificates before 1963, and it is more time-consuming for them to pull them for me. This will answer some of your questions. You do not owe me anything; if I am able to find obits for you, it will be helpful if you can send me the costs of the copies and postage. --Sheila P. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ DEATH CERTIFICATE Source: Monterey County Recorder; Reel 28/1880. Posted on: Monterey County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Monterey?read=294 Surname: Helm ------------------------- In my previous message concerning the Sherwood family in Monterey County the following mistake should be corrected: Susan Elizabeth (Helm) Shrum (1952-1922) should read Susan Elizabeth (Helm) Shrum (1852-1922) It helps to get the proper century in the date; although I suspect in this case it was probably obvious.
Linda, Vivian Louise Carlson Gilmore was my great aunt. I don't know if they had children. There are 6 Gilmores, only one looks to be in Seaside: Charles Gilmore, 831-393-9619. If you wish, I can call the Gilmores and see if they were related to Vivian and wish to have the betrothal card. If no one else wishes to have it, I would be happy to add it to my family heirlooms. Posted on: Monterey County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Monterey?read=293 Surname: Helm, Shrum, Berry, Sherwood, Hebbron, Burby ------------------------- Stansfeld Sherwood was the fourth child of Eugene (1827-1912) and Rhoda Jane (Upsher) Sherwood (1836-1919). In 1852 Eugene Sherwood's oldest sibling and sister, Mary Jane (1816-?) married Halton Hammer Stansfeld (1793-?) thus the name Stansfeld (notice the spelling..ends in feld, not field) Mrs Stansfeld Sherwood was born Nellie Cordelia Shrum ( 18Oct1878-13Dec1932) daughter of Susan Elizabeth (Helm) Shrum (1952-1922) and Andrew Jackson Shrum ( 1839-11Jul1878)in Round Valley, Mendocino County, CA. Andrew Jackson Shrum was murdered by James Anthony with complicity of Jesse Anthony and Mrs Shrum. Jesse Anthony and Mrs Shrum were not convicted due to inadmissable evidence. See "History of Mendocino County, California, pg 340. Susan Elizabeth (Helm) Shrum married Duncan Berry about 1881. Duncan Berry became the step-father of the three Shrum children: William Edward (Shrum) Berry (1871-1948), Mary Etta (Shrum) Berry (abt 1872-bef 1900), and Nellie Cordelia (Shrum) Berry (1878-1932) Mrs Stansfeld Sherwood divorced Stansfeld Sherwood about 1924. She died 13Dec1932 of Influensa-Pneunomia with myocarditis. She was employed as a nurse at the Monterey County Hospital. There is no Sherwood Theater in Salinas, California. Eugene Sherwood, father of Stansfeld, donated the land for the present California Rodeo grounds and the 60 acre Sherwood Park, the railroad station and right-of-way through Salinas as well as schools and churchs. The Sherwood Park and the Sherwood School are named after Eugene Sherwood, a founder of the City of Salinas and one of the chief movers to have the county seat transfered from Monterey to Salinas and the creation of San Benito County out of Monterey County. Thus we have in five generations the following line: Eugene Sherwood, Stansfeld Sherwood, Eugenia Bernice Sherwood, Wava Jean Hebbron, and Nancy Sue Burby (1952-). In retrospect, and with notice to the tendency of present day Salinas to revere John Steinbeck, also add that Eugenia Bernice Sherwood, Thomas Duncan Sherwood (1901-1985) (her brother), and John Steinbeck were all graduates of Salinas Union High School class of 1919.

I had a friend do the CAMI search for me. Today I visited out library and looked at CAMI myself to verify the information. The marriage in 1971 was to a John E. Phillips and Cheryl West. The license was taken out in Monterey county and the marriage was recorded in Monterey county. I don't know if marriage records can be searched at the county level in Monterey for free but I will email a friend that can give you that information. John E. Phillips, age 18 Cherly L. West, age 16 20 May 1971 county #785 state #50510 I also found two other marriages that might fit your John E. Phillips given the age at the date of marriage. John E. Phillips, age 21 Janet Palmieri, age 20 Santa Clara county Aug. 5, 1974 county cert #4976 state #102252 John E. Phillips, age 31 Debra K. Mattson, age 28 Santa Barbara county July 30, 1983 county #1573 state #80597 I know researchers in both counties that could transcribe these marriage certificates also. I will cc them this message and you can compare data from all three certificates. With the birthdate from the certificate in Monterey you can use the use the DMV mail forwarding service and hope that he's in CA and will answer you. Now if the marriage license cannot be transcribed in Monterey county you might write them telling them the circumstances and maybe a friendly clerk will supply the information to you. Some counties have closed records and require payment for any information. Most are open and allow free transcriptions. Sheila is the volunteer that I am ccing this to and she can answer that question. Phillips, Was that a misprint were the F. is suppose to be an E. or is it an actual F. And do you know how I might get a copy for free as I am extremely poor due to workers compensation. The reason I want to get a hold of him is because Cheryl is dying of AIDS. Are you relatives of a Steve Norby hear in Northern Oregon?? Thanks again, Chad Tyson West
To WEST4U@worldshare.net Your return address that you've used on the Monterey query board is not good for either Chad Phillips or Ingles. >From the CA Marriage Index PHILLIPS, John F. age 18 married WEST, Cheryl L age 16 on 20 May 1971 in Monterey County, California Registrar# 27 785 State File# 50510 The marriage license should tell the names of the bride and groom's parents and where they were born. Was he born in CA? From the CA birth index: 1951-1954, there were no John F. Phillips listings, these are the only John E. Phillips born in CA and recorded with the state: Last name, first name, date of birth, sex, mother's maiden name, county of birth PHILLIPS,JOHN,EDWARD,01/08/1952,MALE,IPPOLITO,LOS ANGELES PHILLIPS,JOHN,ERIC,03/25/1952,MALE,GRIEBEL,FRESNO PHILLIPS,JOHN,ENGLAND,10/23/1953,MALE,ENGLAND,KERN None of these will work because of the birthdate and his age at marriage....the person needs to be born between May 21, 1952 and May 20, 1953 to be age 18 at date of marriage.... I will cc a fellow researcher that might be able to transcribe the marriage certificate in Monterey county.
