    1. [CAMONTER] NY Volunteers Update
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, Since posting my first email, I've started a database of all the names. The original book has no index and it was rough going searching through page after page for individual names. So far I am about halfway through the names. Here's how it stands: Field Officers: 3 Staff Officers: 7 Captains: 9 Lieutenants: 30 Non-commissioned staff: 4 Regimental Band: 21 Non-Com. Officers and Privates: 770 Total members of NY Volunteers: 844 As of the present, I have 410 names in the database, only 434 more to finish. I decided to create the database for my own use, as well as help other researchers. I will find a free location on the web to put all the New York Volunteer information I have accummulated. I searched the web and could not find any good information on the NY Volunteers. It's quite interesting how many former members went into California government, both at the local and state levels. For Jeanne: the founder of "The Sonoma Bulletin" in 1852, Alexander J. COX, was a private in Company C of the New York Volunteers. He was living in Mendocino City in 1882. Hope this helps, Blurry eyed Anita C. Monterey County ------------------------------------ BTW: I'll answer all the lookup requests I received after I finish the database. Sorting the names alphabetically will make lookups much easier.

    1. [CAMONTER] New York Volunteers/Mexican War
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, I have a complete roster of all members of the four companies [A, B, C, & D] of The First Regiment of New York Volunteers who fought in the Mexican/American War of 1846-1848. With a little cross referencing I am able to attach rank to all of the Volunteers. I am willing to do lookups on these fellows. The author sometimes knew what became of the men and sometimes he didn't. In any case, there is only a line listing for each individual. Hope this helps, Anita C. Monterey County FYI: The NY Volunteers were recruited in New York City and sailed around the Horn to fight in California. By the time they got to California, they weren't needed in Alta California and were sent to Baja California where they did see combat. Three of the four companies A, B, & D were mustered out in Monterey in 1848, just before the Gold Rush. Many went to the gold fields and thereafter scattered around the state. Some re-enlisted and fought in the Civil War while others were content to consider their fighting days over. The Volunteers were recruited with the understanding that once the Mexican War was over, the men would settle in California "to help populate the state." That idea was conceived before gold was discovered ;-0

    1. [CAMONTER] CA Annual Precipitation [Rainfall]
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, A few people have asked about the variations in California rainfall over the years. I found this URL <http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/coop-precip> which includes not only California, but all states. The text file is very lengthy but shows year-by-year, month-by-month rainfall for all the reporting stations in California. Only a few stations have data going back to 1900. Most start around 1931, or later. You will need to know the names of surrounding towns or cities to the location you are interested in to get an accurate idea of the rainfall for that specific place. I'm still working with the data, but it is pretty interesting stuff. Hope this helps, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [CAMONTER] 2nd Attempt/Divisions of a Township Section
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. A township is divided into 36 sections of 640 acres. Each section is further subdivided into quarter sections., half-quarter sections, or quarter-quarter sections. Examples of these subdivisions within a township appear below. _____________________________________________________________ | | | | | | | | | NWNW | NENW | | | 40 Acres | 40 Acres | | | | | | | | | NE | | _____________________________ | 160 Acres | | | | | | | | | | SWNW | SENW | | | 40 acres | 40 Acres | | | | | | | ___________________________________________________________ | | | | | | | | | | N*SW | | | | 80 Acres | | | | | | | | | W*SE | E*SE | ______________________________ | 80 Acres | 80 Acres | | | | | | | | | | S*SW | | | | 80 Acres | | | | | | | | | | | | _______ ______________________ | ______________ | _____________ | There are 4 quarter sections [NE, NW, SW, SE] in a township. Each = 160 acres. There are 8 half-quarter sections in a township. Each = 80 acres. [The first letter indicates compass direction — N, S, E, W — the separator is an *, and the two letter combination indicates which quarter] There are 16 quarter-quarter sections in a township. Each = 40 acres. [The first two letters indicate compass direction, and the second two letters indicate which basic quarter section.] If there are no compass letters, then it indicates the whole section, except in the case where the section abutts an old land grant. Then it is the area not in the land grant. NOTE: If the designation "Lot" appears on the patent, then it can get real complicated. If Lots are used and there is no "or" mentioned, it is best to locate a good township/range map. [County Assessor's Offices, Recorder's Office, and/or Elections Department may have older maps indicating original land divisions.] I hope this worked, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [CAMONTER] How To Research BLM Patents
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, I thought I would share some of the research techniques I have been using on the Internet to locate and isolate individual BLM land ownership in the Monterey County region I am currently researching. STEP 1: To find out whether an individual received a BLM land patent anywhere in California, or the United States, go to: <http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp> and type in the individual's name. You can do a broad search of all BLM patents nationwide using just a surname, or you can be more specific. There are all sorts of criteria that can be used. In the case of California land patents, a statewide search on a surname will display all patents along with the county. [Make a note of the County and Meridian Name as well as the Township/Range/Section numbers.] Click on a promising name and it will display more detailed information. Select "Legal Land Description." This will display the exact location within a Section that the individual received. NOTE: The Homestead Act only allowed for one 160 acre plot of land per person as a homestead and a Section contains 320 acres, so most often there are more one claimant within a Section. If the same individual is listed more than once, then it is likely one patent is for a homestead and the others were cash sales. If you have trouble figuring out what stuff like "E*E*", "SESW", etc.means under the "Legal Land Description", I can help you decipher the exact location. STEP 2: To find out what type of California land patent was made — homestead, cash sale, military scrip, Spanish/Mexican Land Grants, etc.—go to: <http://www.ca.blm.gov/landpatents/>. Scroll down the page and select the county you are interested in reviewing. Select to either download a PDF of the land patents for the county you are interested in, or the Excel spreadsheet version. Open the County PDF file with Acrobat Reader and scroll through until you locate the Township/Range/Section and then look for the individual's name on the right-hand side. In the middle of the page it will state the land patent type. NOTE: Through cross-referencing with Census Records I have been able to establish that family members — husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters — tended to apply for land within the same general area. Once you find your individual, try scrolling around in the sections immediately preceding and following your individual's section. You may find a relative you didn't know about before. STEP 3: Once you have the Meridian/Township/Range/Section information, a great place to go is: < http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html>. Remember to use the either "North" or "South" with the Township number and "East" or "West" with the Range number. You must also enter the Section Number. You will then get a page filled with all kinds of information. Select "Switch to TerraServer" and you will get a topographical map of the section. These maps are a lot of fun. You can zoom in or out to get a rather precise feel for the land your individual originally patented. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: You may be surprised at the lateness of the patent date. Do not assume that your individual only moved into the area five years previous to the patent. The individuals I am researching I have been able to document as residents of the area for upwards of twenty years prior to the patent dates. In my area of research, the great flood of patents were finalized in the 1890s, although some of the people had been there since the 1870s. On a more personal level, my paternal great great grandmother applied for a land patent after she had been living on the land for over 15 years, and received the official patent six weeks after she applied. Hope this helps, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [CAMONTER] Homestead vs. Residence
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, FYI: BLM land patent owners did not always live on the pre-emption property. The land was often rented to others, either an outright rent per acre or shares of the crop/stock profit. In other cases, they employed individuals to work the land for them. In the case of Southern Monterey County, the primary farm products were either grain crops [wheat, oats, barley] or livestock [sheep or cattle]. Many men [18-50ish] worked on the land as either "farmers," "stock raisers" or "shepherds" but they did not own the land they worked on. There were a number of severe drought years during the latter half of the 19th century that caused some major population shifts. For example, in Southern Monterey County [SMC] many of the livestock owners had their herds moved north to Santa Clara Valley [or possibly east to the San Joaquin Valley]. The hired hands were the ones responsible for moving the herds, many never returned. The drought years also drove many of the land owners and tenants out of the area. The worst drought years occurred in 1850-51, 1863-64, 1870-71, 1876-77, 1880-81, and 1898-99. In between those worst years were some nasty flood years, such as 1853-54, 1861-62, and 1867-68. Both extreme weather conditions had the same result for farmers: either the crops withered from lack of water or drowned from too much water. For those not familiar with California agricultural history: During most of the latter half of 19th century, the homesteading farmers and ranchers were not aware that California did not get rain year round. It took quite a number of years to development irrigation systems. In the case of the Salinas Valley in Monterey County, it wasn't until the 20th century that farmers discovered that the valley sits on a gigantic underground lake of fresh water. Until then farmers and ranchers were at the mercy of "Mother Nature." During drought/flood years when homesteads were abandoned by disallusioned residents, land speculators acquired title to those homesteads. Some made good gambles while others gave up. Hope this helps, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [CAMONTER] Got "Section 1106" Question Answered
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, It took a bit of time squinting at a microfilm reader but I finally got a definitive answer to the question I previously posted. In the July 19, 1877 issue of "The Salinas City Index" there was a two-column article that detailed the "current" regulations regarding Great Registers. [Fascinating reading. I've transcribed the entire article and anyone who would like a lengthy email copy, please contact me offline.] As regards SECTION 1106: it is the provision for "When Entry Must Be Cancelled." There are ten specific reasons when a person "must be cancelled" and I will try to summarize these: 1. The registered person requests the cancellation 2. The registered person has died or been removed [moved from the district]. 3. The registered person has been legally proven insane. 4. The registered person has been convicted of a felony. 5. The registered person did not vote in the preceding three years in any general or judicial election. 6. The registered person is found to be incapable of managing their affairs. The other four sub-sections of Section 1106 are simply more indepth descriptions of one or more of the above cited reasons. FYI: I have yet to do further research but it does appear that in order to register to vote in the 1870s, a male had to appear on the Tax Assesssment Rolls. There are a number of places in "The Registry Law" that mentions the co-ordination of the County Clerk of Elections with the Assessor. ---------------------------------------- BTW: SECTION 1116 of "The Registry Law" stated that one copy of each published Great Register would be transmitted to the: State Library, Mercantile Library, Mechanic's Institute, and Odd Fellows Library of San Francisco. This is in addition to placing a copy in a public place at the County Court House and delivering on demand one to each County and Township Officer. One copy to was also to be delivered to each elector [registered voter] who applied for a copy until the remainder of the published Great Register was exhausted. Take care, Anita C. Monterey County [The next big question I am determined to locate the answer to is: "Why did it take 16 years for voter registration to begin in California?" The legislation pertaining to Great Registers was enacted in July 1866.]

    3. Hi Carol, I noticed the surname CLEVELAND in your email. In Monterey County there is a "Cleveland Rock", elevation 2,510 feet. There is a little bit of information about it in "Monterey County Places Names:" "Cleveland Rock Rises in Sec. 30 T19S R11E. One WILLIAM C. CLEVELAND, a native of Illinois, recieved a patent to 160 acres in this section on November 3, 1891, and LOUIS CLINTON CLEVELAND, also a native of Illinois, received a patent to 160 acres in nearby Secs. 19 and 29. I have yet to learn their relationship. While the patent date is 1891, a CLEVELAND had landed here as far back as 1868." Cleveland Rock is almost due east of San Lucas, in Monterey County, very close to the San Benito County line. I just did a little cross referencing on one of the BLM sites and found the following: CLEVELAND JOHN H ;San Benito ;CACAAA 098907 CLEVELAND WILLIAM L ;Monterey ;CACAAA 103246 CLEVELAND WILLIAM L ;San Benito ;CACAAA 103260 CLEVELAND WILLIAM SENIOR ;San Benito; Monterey ;CACAAA 103257 Here are the rest of the CLEVELAND listings statewide: CLEAVELAND CALVIN ;Kern ;CAV 0006245 CLEAVELAND MATTHEW S ;Sutter ;CACAAA 035002 CLEVELAND AARON S ;Modoc ;CACAAA 070595 CLEVELAND ALBERT H ;Del Norte ;CACAAA 139770 CLEVELAND ALBERT H ;Del Norte ;CACAAA 147635 CLEVELAND ALILA ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 026629 CLEVELAND ALOYSIUS ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090552 CLEVELAND AMASA B ;Tehama ;CACAAA 010857 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051736 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Yuba; Sierra ;CACAAA 051737 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051738 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051739 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051740 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051742 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051743 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Yuba; Sierra ;CACAAA 051744 CLEVELAND AND SIERRA HYDRAULIC;Sierra ;CACAAA 051745 CLEVELAND ANDREW ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142221 CLEVELAND BEVERLY CAMERON ;San Bernardino ;CALA 0131930 CLEVELAND BONA ;Lake ;CACAAA 017161 CLEVELAND CHARLES ;Sacramento ;CACAAA 048146 CLEVELAND CHARLES ;Nevada ;CACAAA 049046 CLEVELAND CHARLES HEIRS OF ;San Joaquin ;CACAAA 050453 CLEVELAND DONALD D ;San Bernardino ;CALA 0116127 CLEVELAND EARL GORDON ;San Bernardino ;CALA 0107919 CLEVELAND EDWARD WARREN ;Fresno ;CAS 0010317 CLEVELAND EPHRAIM M ;San Luis Obispo ;CACAAA 100953 CLEVELAND EVERETTE C ;San Bernardino ;CALA 0115501 CLEVELAND EZRA ;Sonoma ;CACAAA 014578 CLEVELAND FLORENCE JANE ;San Bernardino ;CALA 0107920 CLEVELAND FRANKLIN J ;Amador ;CACAAA 060131 CLEVELAND GEORGE ;Butte ;CACAAA 001130 CLEVELAND GEORGE ;Butte ;CACAAA 035596 CLEVELAND HATTIE ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142221 CLEVELAND HAUCHATS ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090543 CLEVELAND HOWARD L ;Riverside ;CALA 0100256 CLEVELAND HOWARD LESLIE ;Riverside ;CALA 0099796 CLEVELAND IVA M ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 026892 CLEVELAND JAMES ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090540 CLEVELAND JAMES ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142664 CLEVELAND JAMES ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142705 CLEVELAND JESSIE ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142221 CLEVELAND JOHN D ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 147960 CLEVELAND JOHN S ;Amador ;CACAAA 051306 CLEVELAND JOHN S ;Amador ;CACAAA 055399 CLEVELAND JONES ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090550 CLEVELAND JOSEPH ;El Dorado ;CACAAA 061178 CLEVELAND JOSEPH ;Placer ;CACAAA 064339 CLEVELAND JOSEPH ;San Joaquin ;CACAAA 096519 CLEVELAND KITTIE ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142221 CLEVELAND LAURINE ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090560 CLEVELAND LENA ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 142221 CLEVELAND MARGARET ;San Joaquin ;CACAAA 050453 CLEVELAND MARGARET ;San Bernardino ;CALA 0031407 CLEVELAND MILES W ;Kern ;CACAAA 128984 CLEVELAND MITCHELL ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090545 CLEVELAND NAPOLEON B ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 022843 CLEVELAND NEWTON D ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 026629 CLEVELAND OLIVER ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 023183 CLEVELAND OLIVER ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 023613 CLEVELAND QUISACOO ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090563 CLEVELAND RAFAEL ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090546 CLEVELAND REBECCA ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 022874 CLEVELAND ROBERT L ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 021626 CLEVELAND ROBERT S ;Mendocino ;CACAAA 022980 CLEVELAND RUBEN ;Tuolumne ;CACAAA 066562 CLEVELAND RUTH ;Imperial ;CACAAA 090562 CLEVELAND WILLIAM B ;Del Norte ;CACAAA 147632 CLEVELAND WILLIAM C ;San Benito ;CACAAA 103266 CLEVELAND WILLIAM G ;Trinity ;CACAAA 152225 CLEVELAND WILLIAM M ;Humbolt ;CACAAA 144411 The above information was found at: <ttp://www.ca.blm.gov/landpatents/>. 1. [CAMONTER] Naturalization & Voter Registration
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Norcalers, I discovered an interesting correlation between getting naturalized and registering to vote in the late 1800s in Monterey County. This same might hold true for other counties as well. Monterey County is a very large county, it over 100 miles north to south. In the 1870-1880 period, a number of people squatted on government land in the south of the county, 60 miles or farther from the county seat. In compiling a database of the registered voters for a remote valley in south county, I discovered that everyone who was born in another country and had not yet been naturalized, were naturalized the same day as they registered to vote. Comparing registration numbers and dates of registrations, it appears that there was some sort of voter registration drive going on. There are blocks of voters registered on the same date with consecutive voter numbers. If not a citizen, they became a citizen on the spot. Something to think about if you're trying to find out when and where someone was naturalized. In the January 9, 1879 issue of "The Salinas City Index" they included the following list: Admitted To Citizenship: C. Douglas BROWN, Scotland Francis GIRARD, France Joseph GIRARD, France Peter S. Erickson, Denmark Hans C. SCHMIDT, Denmark Peter FROST, Denmark Marcus BUND?SON, Germany Joseph FISHER, Germany John HERBERT, Ireland Maurice FENTON, Ireland John A. PERCY, Canada Leroy V. 3. Hi Everyone, A friend is researching the history of an old homestead and small cemetery in Long Valley, located in southern Monterey County. The company that currently owns the land is planning to preserve the old farm house and cemetery. They are interested in contacting descendants of the old pioneer families that were living in Long Valley in the late 1800s. Long Valley is located along State Highway 198 that runs from San Lucas, Monterey County, to Coalinga in the San Joaquin Valley.
