My uncle was Geroge Smith Jr and was married to Loretta Jean. I know they had a child and am looking for my aunt and cousin or cousins. George was born in Pennsylvania in 1919 and his parents were George Smith and Mary Ann Brown. George had served in the miltary from 3-26-1940 to 6-24-1945. The VA has no information on George or his family. George died in Nov of 1949 and lived on Lincoln Ave, Pacific Grove, Monterey County. He died in the U. S. Naval Hospital in Oakland and was buried in Pacific Grove, California by the Grant D. Miller Mortuaries, Inc of Oakland, California. Robert L. Robertson was the funeral director.

Is anyone familiar with East Alisal St. in Salinas? I've recently found out that my grandfather lived there in 1910 with his parents. I'm going to be visiting Salinas in September and would like to see where they lived so long ago! Do you know if there are houses still on that street? The house # is illegible on the 1910 Census - is there somewhere else I can find out what the # is? I'm pretty sure the census says they rented the house. Any info will be greatly appreciated!!! Candice

In 1840 Larkin sent his six year old son, Oliver, to Oahu for his education. The child living in Monterey spoke mainly Spanish and Larkin was unable to converse with him in English. Other children would follow: Spence, Watson, Kinlock, Wilson and Fitch. Larkin writes nothing of little Oliver's feelings on the day he departed Monterey on a small sailing ship for a voyage of thousands of miles, leaving his mother and father. There are other letters from Oliver to his parents and they will added. Bill http://americahurrah.com/Larkin/Oliver.htm -- http://www.americahurrah.com The History Company bill@americahurrah.com
Hi Everyone, Now that I am close to halfway through the genealogy cards [594 cards/1112 entries complete], my next big transcription may be the "First Admitting Census of the County Hospital of Monterey County" [if the original database is no longer available]. "PREFACE The following material was made available from the Monterey County Historical Society for the express purpose of indexing the patients, or inmates, for use by genealogists and family researchers." There are a total of 2,541 admissions ["This includes 17 trips to the hospital from 1894 to 1902 for one patient"]. The information was compiled by Bettyann Lockwood Hedegard in 1996 "for the express use of the Monterey County Historical Society." It is a gem. Along with the page number from the original document, this database includes Age, Surname, Given Name, Date Admitted, Status of the individual, Nativity, when they came to California, Date Released, whether or not they were released, and Time Died. The Nativity column reads like a United Nations directory;. The standard problem with transcriptions from handwritten documents applies. Surnames " were often entered as they sounded to the recorder from patients with heavy accents. Also, spelling of names did not become standardized until after the 1900s." As for the Given Name "While a lot of names list only an initial, the title Miss has been left out for a female name, but the title Mrs. has been retained to show the difference between husband and wife. Given names for women were not listed until the later years of the census. Note also, that there is no gender asked or stated in the original document." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm willing to do lookups at the present time and will post the results as a group. FYI, I looked up my Monterey County ancestors and none of them showed up. They were either very healthy, or didn't go to the county hospital for treatment. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps, Anita C. I also am interested in the Ingersolls from Marin County, somewhere along the line the Ingersolls and Millers married, now at this time ,it is only speculation on my part that they came from Michigan to Marin to be near an uncle by the name of Frank Miller, his sister Juliette C. Miller -born 1839 either in Ohio or Michigan ,married John S. Ingersoll at Niles Exchange on August 4,1856 ( he died in 1866 in either Missouri or Michigan) and according to family letters and legion,Juliette and her two children Della(born 1857 in Michigan) and Frank (born 1862 in Missouri) went to Marin County California, so your Frank and mine most likely are the same. write me and lets compare notes.
