    1. [CAMONTER] Two Genealogy Oriented CA History Books
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, For those interested in the history of Southern Monterey County and Northern San Luis Obispo County, there is a very interesting book: "The Lands of Mission San Miguel" by Wallace V. Ohles, published by Word Dancer Press, copyright 1997. ISBN 1-884995-13-6. This book is full of information about specific families in the area and has a nice thorough index. It covers the area from King City in Monterey County to Templeton in San Luis Obispo County. Lots of old photos, family genealogies, family stories, etc. It's a 335-page softcover 8-1/2" x 11" book. I'm willing to check the index for surname references, but if the information is lengthy, I'll recommend purchasing the book. ---------------------------------------------- Another interesting book is" "Daughters of History - Centennial Memoirs of the Daughters of California Pioneers" published by Berkeley Hills Books, copyright 2000, ISBN:1-893163-31-8. >From the inside dustcover, this book "was written to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the founding of the Daughters of California Pioneers. In this volume, members of the organization have brought to life the stories of sixty of California's earliest settlers and their families as they have been handed down from generation to generation. … told in the words of their descendants - the narratives passed down in oral tradition and preserved in attics and, in some cases, family and local history books." The book includes a good index of surnames, and the surnames are not all hispanic. Some of the names are familiar to me, but there are a lot of new ones. This book covers all of California. Again, I am willing to check the index for surnames, but if the reference is lengthy, I'm afraid I'll need to decline typing up everything. Hope this helps, Anita C. Monterey County

    3. Hi Dee, Monterey County Hospital was the "public/county hospital". For those individuals who died at the "county hospital" and had no heirs, funds, were indigent, etc., the county "potter's field" was [and still exists] at the intersection of Natividad Road and Laurel Drive, overlooking "Carr Lake". Just to the south of the "county potter's field" is the Chinese Cemetery on Natividad Road. Hope this helps, Anita C. 1. [CAMONTER] House History Mirrors Genealogy
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, For those of you who get frustrated trying to find elusive ancestors. Researching the history of a specific house is just as frustrating. Just like family stories about people are sometimes proven false, printed stories about this house were just as often false. I started in 1869 and managed to trace the land ownership through 1905. [Francis SPRING -> Amos AUSTIN -> William O. HARLAN -> Benjamin C. HARLAN -> Claude F. LACEY. After having found all the relevant deeds, the next logical step was to search through the old Tax Assessment Rolls to find out when the house first showed up on the tax rolls. Unfortunately, the incumbent Tax Collector in 1915 was so incensed by not being re-elected he destroyed all the tax records for the period 1890-1915. Those years are the critical ones for figuring out when the house was built. Frustrated but not deterred, I went to the City Planning Department. Their earliest records for the house began in 1946. I have a nice record of all the changes made to the house from 1946 until 1989 when the house was moved. THe down side is that there were no details. The records only included date, street address, and things like "kitchen remodeled", "new garage", etc. No owner's name, no builder's name, no plans. Speaking of plans, there are no blueprints for the house either. After extensive searching I learned that the architect's nephew destroyed all of the architect's original drawings after the architect died. The nephew felt the drawings were "cluttering up" the garage. Thank goodness I love a challenge. I'm about to start scanning a bunch of old city maps that include the footprint of any buildings. It appears that I will get a little closeer to finding out the year of the house's creation. The other bright light is that the Society has made contact with descendants of relatives of Claude F. LACEY. He is my prime suspect for commissioning the house. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there is a "packrat" in the family who may be able to help us. If I never find the answers, it certainly won't be for lack of trying. Take care, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [CAMONTER] Monterey/Santa Cruz HARLAN Family
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm looking for information on the HARLAN family who lived in Monterey County in the 1890s and later in Santa Cruz County. The HARLANs I have been able to identify so far are: • William O. HARLAN [living in San Joaquin County in 1894]. • Benjamin C. HARLAN [B: 4/21/1864 in California, D: 8/31/1944 in Santa Cruz County] • Benjamin was married to Ida Estella Harlan. Ida was born 4/8/1869 in California to Mother AYEERS and Father CARIER. Ida died 2/3/1946 in Santa Cruz County. What I am most interested in was what the relationship was between William and Benjamin. There was also a George and Martha in the area at the same time. Were the HARLANs land speculators, building contractors, etc. "It's all about the house that used to be at 459 Soledad Street in Salinas." Thank you for any assistance, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [CAMONTER] Claude LACEY of Monterey County
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, I am looking for information on the Claude LACEY family of Monterey County. I have his marriage and death information, as well as a few other tidbits, such as census information. The reason I am looking for information, particularly any descendants is that the Monterey County Historical Society is preparing to restore the home Claude LACEY lived in at 459 Soledad Street in downtown Salinas. The house was designed by pioneer California architect William Henry WEEKS and built on Lot 5 of Block 5 in the SPRING Addition. We are especially interested in any photographs of the house, both exterior and interior shots, from the early part of the 20th century, before the house was renovated. The house is a beautiful six-room, one-story Queen Anne. In 1989, KUMAR Consstruction Company moved the house to the Society's property to make way for a motel parking lot on the house's original site. The house is one of a very few houses of its size that still exists. The Society plans to restore the house to its original state and furnish it as a House Museum of the 1900s period. We would very much like to include information about the family that first lived in the house. Here is what I have so far on Claude LACEY: • He was born September 1, 1864 in California to Joseph and Isabella LACEY. [He died March 22, 1944 in Monterey County at age 79]. • In 1880, Claude [15] was living at home in Castroville with his parents and siblings James [22, b: CAN, Blacksmith], George [18, b: CA, Blacksmith], Joseph [7] and Clara [4]. • He was a Justice of the Peace, a Salinas attorney, and member of the 29th Session of the State Assembly. • He married Emma EDRINGTON on June 20, 1888 in Salinas.[Emma was born Nov. 23, 1866 in Kentucky and died May 26, 1953 in Santa Cruz County at age 86]. • Claude and Emma had at least one daughter, Doris, born September 19, 1902. Her married name was CALLENDER and she died March 11, 1953 at age 50. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, Anita C. Monterey County
