Hi Everyone, A little while back, I posted a query to the lists for information on the HARLAN family. I owe a big thank you to "Carol" for checking her research notes and sending me what information she had on the family. Benjamin Caleb HARLAN was the owner of the property who commissioned pioneer California architect William Henry WEEKS to build a Queen Anne style house in ca. 1898-1900 in Salinas. The Kumar Construction Company saved the house from demolition by donating the structure to the Monterey County Historical Society. The house is now located at the Society's five-acre History Center. With the information supplied by "Carol" I got on the Internet and discovered that Benjamin Caleb HARLAN was a direct descendant of George HARLAN, a member of William PENN's original Quaker colony in Pennsylvania in 1687. The serendiptious part of it all (thanks to the lists) is that now the Society has a pair of houses built by direct descendants of original settlers. The HARLAN-commissioned Victorian Queen Anne house is nearby the Historical Landmark BORONDA Adobe, commissioned by a direct descendant of one of California's earliest settlers. Both men were born in California to parents who emigrated from elsewhere, and are representative of two major periods of California history. I'm still working on the rest of the owners of the house and have so far discovered that the next owner was a member of a pioneer Monterey County family who originated in Canada and England. Descendants still live in the county and still own the business their great great grandfather started. The third owner of the house was Ell K. DUDA. I plan to locate his obituary tomorrow to learn more about him, but it appears that he might have originated in Eastern Europe. The Society plans to open the Queen Anne house as a Victorian House Museum, to complement the BORONDA Adobe, which depicts typical home life during the pre-statehood period of California. If anyone has ever lived at 459 Soledad Street, Salinas, or knows of someone who has lived in the house, please contact me. Happy Thanksgiving! Anita C. Monterey County

Can anyone please do an obit lookup for me at the Salinas Public library? They don't take email or letter request anymore. They state you need to come in person or call. I don't have the funds to call. I'm looking for the obit on Imogene Eichenberger. Looking for other Cantin & Eichenberger family members. I'm also looking for the obit for Imogene Lehr Eichenberger born 11 Mar 1884 Schaller, IA and died 23 Oct 1968 at Skyline Convalescent Hospital in Salinas, CA. Imogene is also buried at Garden of memories in Salinas, CA. Imogene is buried in the same cemetery with her sister Grace L. Cantin who died at Agnews State Hospital on 5 Apr 1965. Thank you for your time & efforts. Sandy in VA.
Hi everyone: I just got home from the Hearing on the state hospital cemeteries that was held in Napa today.. you all missed a great meeting & a very thoughtfull memorial service... sorry you couldn't make it. There were representatives of several organizations there (including the one below... I will translate my notes this weekend & give a better report)... and they showed what can be done, if you have the support of the governments & the people. There were speakers from all walks of life there.. some had family who were mental patients, some were the patients... they were brave & came forward to tell of the treatment they recieved, and how badly the patients were treated even before they died...very moving. Senator Chesbro was very interested in going forward with the California State Hospital projects... so please support him and the following group... John Rodriguez (sorry, probably not spelled correctly) & another state of CA representative were there.. and promised to work with the Senator & the cemetery groups to find, extract & share ALL the burial records for the Hospital patients. The goal is to RESTORE all the cemeteries with full markers over the years. Support this effort please! Below is a note I recieved from one group.. If you are interested in helping in your area.. call the toll free number and let them know. Marge I am on a coalition of the CNMHC with Protection And Advocacy. The coalition is attempting to restore Calfornia State hospital cemeteries and histories. Stockton State Hospital is one of the cemeteries in the Central Valley area that I am part of to document the history and restore the cemetery. Your research will be very helpful. Thanks. If you would like more information on the project you can call 1-800-626-7447 at the California Network of Mental Health Clients (CNMHC). We will be holding a legislative hearing at Napa State Hospital today from 1 - 5:30 PM if you can join us. I recieved the following from Peggy at SSCDDMH... I am going to call Lori Monday. Marge Thank you for your email to Senator Chesbro regarding the upcoming hearing on 11/16. The hearing begins at 1:30pm. We will first hear from two other states who have undertaken restoration projects, followed by the State Department of Mental Health and the State Department of Developmental Services who will testify about the historic use and current status of California graveyards at these institutions, and finally we will hear from the CA Memorial Project about their efforts to begin restoration efforts in California. If you are unfamilar with this project, you may want to contact them (Lori Sheppard at 1-800-776-5746). Following these witnesses, we will take public testimony, at which time, we would be happy to hear from either or both of you. The Committee would be very interested to learn what you know about Stockton Developmental Center. If you have documentation, you can provide ahead of time, that would be great -- even if its only a bit more detailed description that you could send my by email. Please let me know if you plan on attending and testifying and I'll make sure you get a slot.
