    3. Modoc County Record - September 5, 2002 Rev. Conrad Marzuola On August 31, 2002, the Reverend Conrad Marzuola went home to Glory. Jesus took him after injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident August 26, 2002. Conrad was born in Arkansas City, KS on March 21, 1951. He served in the United States Marine Corps for two years. He was a Bi-vocational pastor for the Southern Baptist Convention, and also a supervisor at United States Gypsum Company in Empire, NV. Pastor Conrad spent many years living, walking, talking and wearing the devout faith that he had in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His one and only aim in life was to see people come to the saving knowledge of Jesus. For the past ten years he has served as pastor to both Empire Community Church and Living Water Fellowship, pastoring both churches for a period of time then, LWF for the past six years. He was a wonderful pastor, husband and father. "The Lord used him time and time again in mighty and powerful ways, and the fruit will remain," shares his wife Terry. "He was the first to say it wasn't him, it was the Lord who worked through him. He was just a vessel that God used and he was always ready and willing to be used by Him." He is survived by his wife Terry of Cedarville, daughter Kippin and son-in-law Jeff Hoffman of Sacramento; daughter Jacquie and son-in-law Frank Powers of Phoenix, AZ. Son Chris Marzuola and daughter Sara of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren.; parents Gene and BeBe Marzuola of Dallas, Texas; brother Tim Marzuola and Dan Marzuola; sister Gina Marek of Dallas, Texas; brother Weston Marzuola of Arkansas City, KS; mother-in-law Lucille Evans of Cedarville and the family of Living Water Fellowship. Living Water will be hosting a memorial celebration to uplift the name of Jesus, in Cedarville at the Country Hearth Rose Garden, 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. There will be a feast following the memorial at Living Water Fellowship, the blue church on main Street. Howard William Knuepel Former Elk Grove dairyman and farmer Howard William Knuepel of Alturas, CA. passed away unexpectedly September 1, 2002 in Alturas, CA. The Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra conducted a memorial service at Kerr Mortuary Chapel in Alturas on Wednesday morning, Sept. 4. Interment was private. Mr. Knuepel, 73, a cattle and hay rancher in Alturas for the past 11 years on the family's H. Knuepel and Son Ranch, had his agricultural start at an early age in Elk Grove, CA, on the family business. Born to Henry and Fannie Knuepel on November 25, 1928 in Franklin, CA., he graduated from Elk Grove schools and worked on the family ranch. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War until his discharge on April 1953. On October 11, 1953 in Sacramento, CA, he married his neighborhood sweetheart, Jean Hansen, who was also born and reared in Elk Grove and lived "across the road." The two have shared a marriage of 49 years. A talented carpenter, Mr. Knuepel built four houses during his lifetime, including his own Elk Grove home. He was a dairyman and farmer in Elk Grove for 38 years where he maintained membership with the Elk Grove Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing and sport hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son John H. Knuepel in 1997 and his sister Francis Mustra. He is survived by his wife Jean Knuepel of Alturas; son Greg Knuepel of Alturas; daughter-in-law Bonnie Knuepel, loving niece Cheryle Johnson and nephew-in-law Randy Johnson; grandsons Scott Knuepel (Sacramento); Klint and Kurt Knuepel, granddaughter Kasey Knuepel and Travis Johnson; step-grandsons John Davis and Cable Davis, all of Elk Grove; sister Alice Springer, Sacramento; father-in-law Otto F. Hansen, Franklin; brothers-in-law, Robert Hansen of Concord and Monty Hansen of Galt. Memorial donations may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 10445 Old Placerville Rd., Sacramento, CA 95822. Albert J. Christy Former Surprise Valley teacher and coach, Albert J. Christy, 78, of Corvallis, OR., passed away August 26, 2002 in Corvallis. Services were held at DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel in Corvallis, OR on Friday, Aug. 30. The son of Albert L. and Ina Mae (Akin) Christy, he was born on a farm November 16, 1923 at Six Rivers, OR. He spent most of his boyhood at the Klamath Agency on the Klamath Indian Reservation near Klamath Lake. He graduated from Chiloquin High School and Oregon State University. Albert took pilot training with the Naval Air Corps near the end of World War II. He played football on the Navy Air Corps team, which was undefeated, beating such football greats as Oklahoma. He also wrestled for the Navy, winning division championship in his weight class and was to wrestle once more for the national title, but the match was canceled due to the war. He obtained teaching certificates in Vocational Agriculture and Science on a secondary level in 1949 and taught at Shedd High School. He moved to Cedarville, CA, where he taught at Surprise Valley High School. He also coached basketball, wrestling and football there. At Cedarville he also taught agricultural classes in "Veterans in Training" programs. Mr. Christy was a member and leader of 4-H, class advisor, advisor of Future Farmers of America, active in the volunteer fire department, a member of Rotary and Toastmasters. >From Cedarville, he moved his family to Klamath Falls, OR. where he farmed for a few years, then to Corvallis, where he worked on a degree in Counseling and School Administration. He began working at Evanite Fiber and retired after working there many years. He was shop steward for his union and secretary-treasurer for the Linn-Benton-Lincoln Labor Council. He also served his union as member of hiring committee for state union representatives. Mr. Christy was a member of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers He married Dorothy Davis in 1946 and reared four children with her until her death in 1982. He married Rosalie Sytsma on April 16,1987. Mr. Christy enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, rodeo, football, wrestling, and dancing. He will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed his family very much. He is survived by his wife Rosalie of Corvallis, OR; sons Albert D. Christy of Philomath, OR; William Christy of Bend, OR; Bradley Prosa of Los Angeles, CA; Tod Prosa of Corvallis, OR; daughters Carrie Brevik of Vancouver, WA; Shirlee Johnson of Bend, OR; Denise Prosa of Boise, Idaho; sisters, Shirley Sytsma of Chillicum, WA; Sharon Debord of Lodi, CA; Mary Fenton of Bothel, WA; Ina Smith of Tigard, OR; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. September 12, 2002 Ada 'Evelyn' Rogers Ada "Evelyn" Rogers passed away in Brookings, OR on August 4, 2002. She was born to Una and Nile Hickey on August 13, 1921 in White Sulphur Springs, MT. The Scheetz family lived in Likely for several years, while Frank was a foreman with Southern Pacific Railroad in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Rogers. Frank passed away on January 13, 2002. They shared 63 years together, and are united once again. Mrs. Rogers is survived by her sons James Rogers of Grants Pass, OR, Ted Rogers of Brookings, OR; Rex Rogers of Crescent City, CA; daughters Charlotte Charles of Brookings, OR, Carol Evans of Reno, NV, Norma Scheetz of Milford, CA, formerly of Alturas, and Laura Rogers of Reno, NV. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. "Not only was Evelyn our mother, she was our best friend," express her children. George Theodore Sarason California Pines resident George Theodore Sarason passed away unexpectedly in Alturas, CA on September 3, 2002. Mr. Sarason was a friend to many and a man known for his fine contracting work throughout the years. He will be missed by his family and many friends. Born January 30, 1922 in Glendale, CA to Hazel and Michael Theodore Sarason, George was an outstanding sprinter and track star at Glendale High. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Sarason served his time in the European Theater during World War II. Before he entered military service, he worked with his father in the contracting business. Following military service, he went on to become a Journeyman and licensed contractor, working with his father for many years, building and doing concrete work. The two built many of the Southern California "Bungalows" and beautiful Glendale homes. The father and son team worked together constructing a large hotel in Death Valley. Mr. Sarason continued his work in the contracting business for 40 years and "could do anything," recall family members. He was a person of many talents. His interests and hobbies were varied. He loved animals, enjoyed motorcycling and keeping in touch with friends throughout the world as a ham radio operator. He moved from Glendale to Death Valley, then relocated to California Pines 16 years ago. He and wife Wilma were married in 1985, and made their home in California Pines until she preceded him in death six years ago. Mr. Sarason was fond of his pets. He had several cats and also enjoyed feeding the wild geese who frequented his California Pines home. He retired when he relocated to Modoc County, but contined to work on projects for California Pines Resort, friends and neighbors. He is survived by his three daughters, Linda Anne Fairbanks, Riverside, CA; Suzanne Peavy of Riverside; and Sherry Hinton of Lancaster; son Michael Sarason, Lake Shastina; his companion Billie Musfelt of Alturas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donations in Mr. Sarason's memory may be made to any charity which cares for the welfare of animals Kerr Mortuary in Alturas is in charge of arrangements. A private family service was held. Warren Worth Peach Warren Worth Peach of Alturas, passed away on August 25, 2002, in Medford, OR. He was 75 years old. Mr. Peach was born on January 2, 1927 in Ohio. He was known around Alturas as a handyman willing to help anyone who asked for his help. He was brilliant in his electrical and mechanical skills. He could take anything apart, figure out the problem and put it back together in good working order. His maroon "T-birds" were his special gem and he had several throughout his lifetime. He will truly be missed by his friends in the Alturas vicinity, especially long-time friend Roger Rose. At Warren's request, no funeral or memorial services will be held. Shirley Virginia Jeffcoat Shirley Virginia Jeffcoat passed away peacefully September 6, 2002, in her home in Yuma, AZ. She was 77 years old. Shirley Fairclo was born in Klamath Falls, OR. She attended Willamette University and Oregon State. She resided in Likely, CA during two periods, working with her husband Jeff in Jess Valley and later as owners of the Likely General Store. The Jeffcoats lived in Oregon, California, Alabama and Arizona. She was an active volunteer in the Hospice organization and was a member of PEO and Eastern Star. Shirley is survived by her son, San Diego attorney Jay Jeffcoat, and daughter-in-law Mesa College Dean, Kendra Jeffcoat, granddaughter Jessica "Kasey" Jeffcoat of Monterey, CA and grandson Ryan Jeffcoat of San Mateo, CA. Her husband, William "Jeff" Jeffcoat died in 1997. Johnson Mortuary in Yuma, AZ handled arrangements for cremation. A memorial service will be held on October 19, 2002 in Klamath Falls, OR at the Mt. Laki Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Shirley's name to the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at 10835 Alton Way, San Diego, CA 92121. September 19, 2002 Omer E. McCulley Long-time Canby rancher Omer Ernest McCulley passed away Wednesday morning, September 18, 2002 in Alturas, CA. Mr. McCulley was 85. Services will be held at graveside on Friday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m. at the Alturas Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a gathering at the Canby Fire Hall following the service. Kerr Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The Record will publish a complete obituary next week. Rev. Mack Lancaster The Rev. Mackey D Lancaster, a respected, kind, loving and forgiving man, who dedicated his life to pioneering churches throughout Northern California from the time he was 21, passed away September 14, 2002 in Alturas, CA at the age of 84. He and his late older brother the Rev. Lester G. Lancaster shared their dedication and both ministered at separate times at the Full Gospel Church in Alturas. Rev. Mack was honored for over 50 years of ministry service to the Assemblies of God. He dedicated his whole life to God and his family. One of nine children born to Andrew and Mary Lancaster on March 17, 1918 in Joplin, Missouri, the family left Missouri in a covered wagon when Mack was 5 years old. His father settled the last homestead in California. Mack finished the eighth grade and worked in the trades of timber falling and carpentry. He became a minister of the Gospel, spreading the word of God at age 21. The two brothers were married to two sisters of the Lain family, originally of Arkansas. Mack and Maxine M. Lain met in Imperial Valley and were married on June 16, 1940 in Yuma, Ariz. The Rev. Mack and Maxine Lancaster and the Rev. Lester and Thelma (Lain) Lancaster shared a rewarding career working for the Lord, pioneering churches across the state. The last church Mack and Lester built together was the Likely Assembly of God Church. Rev. Mack had made Modoc his home for the past 45 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mack and Maxine never waivered in their lives serving God. His one goal in life was to arise in heaven where he knew life would be eternal. The Rev. Lancaster is survived by his devoted, loving wife Maxine of Alturas; son Philip Lancaster of Gardnerville, NV; daughter Sandie Lafferty of Alturas; two brothers and two younger sisters; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter Marilyn Betters in 1986; his brother Lester, Sept. 13, 1998; two older brothers; one older sister and one younger sister; a grandson and great-granddaughter. Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. at the South Fork Assembly of God in Likely, CA. Pastor Earl McMilan gave the service. He was laid to rest near his brother at the Likely Cemetery. Kerr Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Franklin Jack Powers Franklin Jack Powers, 73, of Boise, Idaho, died Monday, September 16, 2002 in Boise. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20 at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel, 500 N. 18th East, Mountain Home, Idaho. The Rev. John Payne will officiate. Jack was born October 3, 1928 in Lake City, CA, the first of two children born to Harold J. and Marie (Street) Powers. He was reared on the family ranch located in Eagleville, CA, and graduated from Surprise Valley High School. He continued his education at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, CA. When the Korean War conflict escalated in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Jack was stationed at Ethan Allen Air Force Base in Winooski, VT. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in Vermont, Jack met and married Elizabeth "Betty" Maloney of Berlin, VT. Following his discharge from the Air Force, they returned to the family ranch in Eagleville, which Jack managed for his family. Two children were born to Jack and Betty while they resided in Modoc County. In 1962, the family sold the ranch in California and Nevada, and purchased the Snowline and Gleed Ranches in Lima and Dell, MT. Subsequently, Jack and Betty owned ranches in Nevada, California, and Idaho. Jack managed the Matador Ranch near Dillon, MT during the 1970s. Jack and Betty made their home in Lemhi County, Idaho for 25 years, with ranches owned at Salmon, on Bohannon Creek, and then at Leadore on Little Eightmile Creek. In 1995, the ranch at Leadore was sold, and the family moved to the Glenns Ferry, King Hill and Mountain Home area, where they purchased ranch and farming property. Jack raised cattle, sheep, and registered quarter horses during his years as a rancher. He was an accomplished horse trainer, with a particular interest in cutting and team roping horses. He was an avid supporter of children and horses. He was a 4-H horse leader, and a founder of the Leadore Roping and Youth Improvement Club. He gave horses to individual children with an interest in horses, and loaned horses to others to use in competition in various horse events. Jack was a lifetime (50+ years) member of the B.P.O.E., and also a 45-year-member of the Masonic Order and the Order of Eastern Star. He retained his church membership in his childhood community of Eagleville. He was a 55-year-member of the American Quarter Horse Association, as he had started registering colts in his teenage years. Jack served as a director on the Lemhi Irrigation District Board for 25 years. He was inducted to the Eastern Idaho Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1994, and inducted in the Eastern Idaho Horse Hall of Fame in 1996. Jack supported civic and community organizations in any community near which he ranched. Jack enjoyed hunting big game and game birds. He also enjoyed golf, playing cards (especially Bridge), Western movies, and was an avid reader of Western books and history. Jack enjoyed the sport of rodeo and was an accomplished team roper. Jack is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter Lucinda and her husband, John Walker, of King Hill; son Sean of Mountain Home; three grandchildren -- Amy Lynn, Ted Jackson Walker, and Samantha Sean Powers; cousin James Donnelly of Pendleton, OR; nephew Jack Jay Federer of Big Timber, MT; and niece Susan Marie Federer of Sacramento. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold J. Powers; his mother, Marie Powers; and his sister, Jane Federer Baker. Jack spent the last 27 years of his life in a courageous battle fighting Parkinson's Disease. Betty J. Engelking Betty J. Engelking, age 80, of Alturas, CA and formerly of Savanna, IL, died Friday, September 6, 2002 at the Modoc Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility in Alturas, CA. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., September 11, in Savanna, IL. Burial was in the Savanna Township Cemetery. Born Betty Peterson on Wednesday, July 12, 1922 in Savanna, IL., she married Harry F. Engelking on August 22, 1941. Betty worked at Burgess Battery and Structo Manufacturing in Freeport, IL. She worked at the offices of National Lock in Savanna, and until her retirement in 1991, she worked as a cook at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. Betty was a member of the Community United Church of Christ and several organizations of the church, the Order of Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, an active volunteer of the Golden Meals delivery program, and a past member of the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, knitting, crocheting, cooking and reading. Survivors include one daughter, Dawn (Robert) Greene of Alturas; two grandchildren, Kelly J. (Mark) Clark of Chino Hills, CA and Harry R. (Rochelle) Greene of Alturas; eight great-grandchildren, Shawnra, Vanessa Greene of Bakersfield, CA; Karl, Robert, and Amanda Greene of Alturas; and Jacqueline, Daphne, and Whitney Clark of Chino Hills; and a number of nieces and nephews.
