Modoc County Record - October 3, 2002 Leola C. Bartholomew Services for lifetime Modoc resident Leola Cleone Bartholomew will be held Friday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Alturas Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra will conduct the service at graveside. Mrs. Bartholomew passed away on September 28, 2002 at Modoc Medical Center's Skilled Nursing Facility in Alturas, CA, where she had been a resident for the past approximately 12 years. She was 83 years of age. Born Leola Cleone Spaulding on January 8, 1919 in Davis Creek, CA to Chester Arthur and Hattie (Poindexter) Spaulding, she attended school in Davis Creek. At the age of seven, her mother died and her father remarried. Leola left home at the age of 12. She was married at the young age of 15, to Gilbert Smith, a marriage that produced their two children Audrey and Robert. During her marriage to Denver Yancey in 1942, one son, Chuck, was born. Her final marriage in 1950 to Darrell Bartholomew ended in divorce in 1960. Throughout the years, Mrs. Bartholomew worked hard cooking and waitressing. She was outspoken, but with a great sense of humor. "There was no one she didn't know and she was a great cook," recalls her son Chuck, who picked up his mother's cooking skills by watching her over the years. Remembering her character, her son recalled the time in the 1950s, when Leola had made a large, tasty and spicy pot of chili. Much to the amazement of her young son, she invited a passing stranger who would otherwise gone without a meal, in to enjoy a hot meal. During 1949 and 1950, while in Davis Creek, she earned a reputation as being a good cook from the hay crews for whom she cooked. From the 1940s through the 1980s, she worked as a waitress, working at such landmarks as Cedar Lodge in Cedarville, the Sportsman's Club, Pioneer Inn in the 1940s, Warner Hotel in the 1950s, the Beacon Coffee Shop in the 1980s, all in Alturas. For 20 years, from the 1960s to the 1980s, she relocated to Yountville, CA., where she worked at the Veterans' Home and waitressed at a restaurant called "The Bus Depot" in Yountville. She also worked in Empire, NV. for a brief time. When she returned to Modoc County, she went to work at the Beacon Coffee Shop in Alturas. She retired in 1985. From a large family, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie, Elwood, Weller and Harvey Spaulding and one sister, Myra Spaulding DeWitt; her daughter Audrey and her granddaughter, Doris Ann. She is survived by her son Robert and his wife Barbara Smith of Santa Cruz, CA; son Chuck Yancey of Alturas; half-sister, Marge Cain of Merrill, OR; two step-sisters, Mildred Adair of Ely, NV and Berniece Hall of Alturas; grandchildren Brad Yancey of New Pine Creek, CA and Cory Yancey, Phoenix, AZ; Debbie and Steven Smith of Santa Cruz; and daughter Audrey's children: Raymond Williams of Terra Bon, OR and Randy Johnson of Ontario, OR; several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews, and former husband Darrell Bartholomew of Burney. October 10, 2002 Kathleen Ann Bishop Kathleen Ann Bishop, known as "Kay" by her many friends and family, and a long-time Modoc County resident, passed away after a brief illness at the age of 80, on October 3, 2002, at Modoc Medical Center, Alturas, CA. . Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Oct. 10 with the Rev. Linda Moore conducting services at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, in Alturas. Mrs. Bishop, remembered for her kind and gentle spirit and great gift of hospitality, also "loved the Lord with all her heart." She was born on September 18, 1922 in Alturas, one of four daughters of Richard and Lillie (Chambers) Anklin. She attended Modoc Union High School and married Warren W. Welch of Davis Creek on March 5, 1939. In 1943, Welch enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served until his death on Iwo Jima on March 9, 1945, leaving Kathleen a widow and young mother at age 22. Kathleen had worked in the Bremerton shipyards in Washington while her husband was training there in 1944. She returned to Davis Creek to help build the causeway across the south end of Goose Lake in 1945, with the Modoc County Road Dept. She was proud to be selected to drive the newest dump truck, because she had the seniority to do so. She moved with her daughter to Lakeview, OR., to work for the Lake County Sheriff's Office as a bookkeeper from 1944 to 1945. Later, she returned to Alturas to work for Drs. Phil and Paul McKinney from 1946 to 1947. On February 25, 1947, Kay married C.M. "Snooks" Bishop at Willow Ranch, CA and the couple moved to their ranch at Davis Creek. They had two sons and enjoyed ranching and living in Davis Creek for many years, until they sold the ranch. The family credits Kay, and Buster Dollarhide, for initiating the Davis Creek Ground Hog Supper and the original 4-H Dress Revue and Junior Livestock Show which were a combined event when they were first started, many years ago. Kay was an active community leader for the Davis Creek 4-H, a member of the Davis Creek Fire Dept. Auxiliary and PTA. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and of St. Michael's Episcopal Church Women. Mrs. Bishop enjoyed her family and home most of all. An elegant woman, she was known for her fine cooking, and provided meals and hospitality for many cowboys over the years. She loved the ranch and later, her beautiful home in Alturas, where she tended her beautiful flowers and her garden. She is survived by her husband C.M. "Snooks" Bishop of Alturas; daughter Dixie (Welch) and husband Duane McGarva, Likely; son Bill and wife Robin Bishop, Bakersfield; son Frank and wife Lee Bishop, Reno, NV; grandchildren: Lynne and Russ Heryford, Scott McGarva, Aimee and Gary Hendrickson, Brandon and Stephanie Bishop, Mary and Joy Amarel, Abby Chambers, Billy Bishop and Nick Schultz; also six great-grandchildren: Matt and Pete Heryford, Brad and Josh Hendrickson, Katie and Joey Amarel; a sister Betty Murrah of Concord, CA; cousin Sharon Staton of Eagleville; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who live out of the area. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Warren; sisters Evelyn Bratton, Maudie Ward and Bea Kelly. Kerr Mortuary is taking care of arrangements. Interment will be at the Davis Creek Cemetery. Theo May McCulley Theo May McCulley, age 80, died Sunday, October 6, 2002 at her home in Canby, CA. Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, at Alturas Cemetery with Rev. Earl Clark and long-time friend Paul Bailey officiating. Kerr Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements. Theo was born on January 23, 1922 in Summer Lake, OR to Arthur and Nellie McCulley. Theo was three years old when her mother died in childbirth, so Theo and her sister Phyllis, went to live at Children's Farm Home in Corvallis, OR, then Sacred Heart Children's Home in Klamath Falls, OR, and with relatives in Lakeview, OR through their school years. Theo and Phyllis spent the summer months at sheep camps throughout Lake County, OR, with their father. Theo graduated from high school and met Omer McCulley in Lakeview, OR. They were married on January 24, 1941 in Reno, NV. She and Omer lived near Patton Meadows (just West of Lakeview) which Omer's father Homesteaded in 1903. There, they ranched while rearing their family. After a fire destroyed their home, they took their family to Rough an d Ready near Grass Valley, CA in 1955. They lived there and operated another ranch until 1966, when they moved to Canby, CA and began ranching again. Theo loved to work in the fields with Omer, haying and feeding the cattle. In 1979, Theo worked as an aide at Arlington Elementary School in Canby for eight years and then retired. Students at the school looked to her as the "Grandma" at school. She was named "Mother of the Year" and was active in the Canby Mother's Club until it disbanded. The joy of her life was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing baseball and board games. She also loved to play the harmonica. In her younger years she enjoyed drawing and painting with oils. She was an avid crossword puzzler and was very talented at creating incredible Halloween costumes for her family. Her grandchildren were always learning tongue twisters from her. Theo is survived by her son Larry McCulley and his wife, Diana, of Canby; son Chuck and his wife Margaret, of Alturas; son Raymond (Bim) and his wife, Carol, of Alturas; daughter Lori Holloway and her husband Kelley, of Alturas; eight grandchildren, Tom McCulley and his wife Jennifer, of Alturas; Megan McCulley of Canby; Jake and Jesse McCulley; Dana and Kristin McCulley, all of Alturas; Sandi Lynch and her husband, Andy of Stanwood, WA; Courtney Holloway of Alturas; two great-grandchildren, Travis and Mary McCulley of Alturas; and a "special" son Ronnie Brown of Canby. Theo was preceded in death by her husband, Omer, on September 18, 2002 and her sister, Phyllis Brown, in March of 1988. Donations in Theo's memory may be made to the Modoc Medical Center Auxiliary in Alturas. Rebecca (Becky) M. Evans Rebecca (Becky) M. Evans passed away, at the age of 93, on Oct. 8, 2002 at Modoc Medical Center's Skilled Nursing Facility in Alturas, CA. After the death of her husband, Leland, Becky moved to Alturas in 1996 to be near her son Larry Evans and his wife Joy. Becky enjoyed her home on North East Street until she moved into "Warnerview" in 2000. In her mid-80s, she began writing her memoirs and published two books. She was good at keeping up with correspondence to friends and family over the years and each Christmas, and also good at needlework. Her family and friends gave her a big birthday bash, which she thoroughly enjoyed, upon her 90th birthday. Rebecca was born in Hornbrooks, CA on July 4, 1909 to Marion and Martha Cummins. She married Leland Evans of Fort Jones, CA on June 15, 1932. They were married 70 years. Leland died on May 1, 1996 in Warnerview, Alturas. Mrs. Evans is survived by her son Larry Evans and wife Joy of Alturas; son-in-law Robert Beeson of Fort Jones, four grandchildren Kitty, Cozette and Will. Her granddaughter Nancy Conger is a resident of Alturas; seven great-grandchildren: Janel, Kristin, Amanda, Kevin and Brieana. Vincent Hower and Ethan Conger live in Alturas; one great-great grandson, Kadin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews of the Cummins and Evans family. She was preceded in death by her husband Leland; her daughter Gae Beeson and an infant son. Services will be held in the Scott Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sunday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m. in Greenview, CA. Private interment will be at Fort Jones Cemetery in Fort Jones, CA. John Janisse John Janisse died at the Lake District Long Term Care Facility in Lakeview, OR., on Monday October 7, 2002 from congestive heart failure at the age of 79. Funeral services will be held at the Fort Bidwell People's Church on Saturday October 12, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Lani Janisse officiating. Interment will follow in the Fort Bidwell cemetery with military honors provided by the Cedarville VFW post # 7888. Visitation will be at the Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the People's Church in Fort Bidwell. Desert Rose Funeral Chapel of Lakeview is in charge of the arrangement. John was born to Cornelius and Lucy (Dana) Janisse of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin on January 29, 1923. He grew up in Cedar Grove where he graduated from high school. He enlisted into the Navy in 1942 and served for 26 months at the Naval Air Station in Hawaii. He was married to Jean Jockell on December 27, 1945 at White River Junction, Vermont and was divorced in 1964. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he started his career with Shell Oil Company in Los Angeles and also started furthering his education by attending various junior colleges in the Los Angeles area. After working in the Divisional Office for Shell Oil for 20 years, he transferred to the Regional Office in San Francisco for six years and finished his career at the head office in Houston, Texas. He retired in 1977, after 31 years. He then moved to Reno, Nevada where he developed mobile home lots until moving to Fort Bidwell in 1980. He moved to Lakeview in 2001. He was a life member of the Cedarville VFW post #7888, had served as president of the Fort Bidwell cemetery district, and was a member of the Fort Bidwell Fire Department and the Community Church. He was serving on the Board of Directors for the Cedarville Hospital when it opened. John is survived by his daughter, Lynn Brusseau of Arcadia, CA, and his son Lani Janisse of Hartford, Vermont; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. James M. Szutowicz James M. Szutowicz, born February 28, 1942 in Danville, PA, passed away Wednesday evening October 2, 2002 at Modoc Medical Center Alturas, CA. His formative years were spent in Niles, IL and Pomona, CA. He graduated from Mt. San Antonio College where he was president of the California Young Farmer Chapter and winner of the project competition award. James went on to attend Chico State College, majoring in Animal Husbandry. In 1964 he joined the U.S. National Guard and served until 1970, In 1964 James married Victoria V. Jones. During his career as Sales Manager for major national butcher supply Companies, the family lived in Fremont, CA; Grants Pass, OR; Rochester, IL; Pomona and Sacramento, CA. In August of 1988, James was involved in a head on collision with a drunk driver. The accident rendered him a paraplegic. In July, 1994 James moved to Alturas, purchasing a home in town. In 1996, James and his wife, Vickie, built a home in Thoms Creek II, where he sent the remainder of his life in the country, raising cattle, tending chickens and gardening. James is preceded in death by his parents, James and Theresa Szutowicz, sister Theresa Carman, infant brother, Paul Szutowicz. He is survived by his wife Victoria (Vickie) of Alturas, daughter Jamie Szutowicz of Sacramento and husband Scott Fitzpatrick; daughter Jeneen Griffin of San Bernardino and husband Michael, son James Jr. and wife Renee of Sacramento, daughter Jill Castro and son Hugo Castro of Eureka, foster son David Martin and Kimberly if Manteca; grandchildren Alicia, Anthony, Max, Christopher, Brianna, Joseph, Kelsey, Alex, and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorial contribution be made to the Craig Hospital, Spinal Cord Injury Dept., 3425 South Clarkson, Englewood, CO 80110.
