    3. William 'Bill' Herbert Parks William "Bill" Herbert Parks, 68 passed away at his Santa Rosa residence on Monday, October 7, 2002. He was born on August 20, 1934 to Harry J. and Allison (Graham) Parks in California. Bill was a lifetime member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He graduated from PUC Elementary School and PUC Prep Academy, Angwin, CA. He served in the U.S. Army with the White Coats in the medical division. Bill was a retired truck driver. He was also a proud member of the Pit River Tribe in Modoc County, where for many years he was a transport truck driver for the Indian Health Services. He is survived by his wife, Kay Parks of Santa Rosa; his sons, Monty Parks of Ukiah; Larry Parks of Napa, in addition to his second marriage, children; Tim and Torry Slaton of Alta, CA; Tamra Clemons of Santa Clara and Terry Mikhailenko of Sacramento; also his two brothers, Robert Parks of Eugene, OR and Phillip Parks of Yuma, AZ and one sister, Nancy Sutsch of Yuma, AZ. He leaves seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia, two infant children, Carol and Robert. Bill was well loved and will be missed be all who knew him. A funeral will be conducted at the Elmshaven Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1 Woodland Lane, Deer Park, Saturday, October 12, 2002, at 3:00 p.m., with visitations one hour prior to service. Pastor Robert Surridge officiating. A memorial service will be held at the Alturas Seventh-day Adventist Church, 300 W. 2nd St., Alturas, CA, on October 19, 2002, 4:00 p.m. Private inurnment will be at the Alturas Cemetery. Cremation arrangements are being cared for by Morrison Funeral Chapel, St. Helena. Jerry Morrison Former Cedarville resident Jerry Morrison passed away on May 23, 2002 in Durham, CA. A funeral was held at the Durham Memorial Hall on May 29. Jerry was born January 14, 1932 in Alva, Oklahoma to Daisy and Jonathan Morrison. He was reared in Paradise and Cedarville, CA. He married Margaret Ellen Reen Toney on June 17, 1949 in Reno, NV. Jerry served in the military for 33 years, starting in the US Marine Corps and ending as a pilot in the US Navy. He loved flying and flew P-3s, A-4s, and A-7s off carriers for most of his career as a Naval Officer. Mr. Morrison had a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Post-graduate School in Monterey, CA and a Master's degree in Business Administration form the University of Southern California. He was currently the manager of the Durham Irrigation District in Durham at the time of his death. Jerry loved traveling, was an avid reader and a great friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret, of Durham; a daughter and son-in-law Toni and Randy Langlitz of Chesapeake, VA; a daughter Pamela Morrison of Beaufort, S.C.; a daughter Carolyn Gillette of Durham; sister and brother-in-law Doris and Norm Johnson of Boring, OR; brother and sister-in-law Don and Marcie Crawford of N.C.; grandson Robbie Morrison; grandchildren Haley Rohatsch, Vanessa and Tiana Gillette; Lindsay, Caleb and Michaela Langlitz. Maurice O'Callaghan Graveside service for Maurice O'Callaghan, Modoc County rancher, are set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, at the family plot in Linkville Cemetery in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Mr.O'Callaghan died in Portland, OR on October 13, 2002. Born in Klamath Falls in 1924, O'Callaghan was a 50-year resident of Fort Bidwell in northeastern Modoc County. For most of those years he helped operate the extensive Sagehorn Ranch owned by his father and mother, Leo and Marie Sagehorn. He was schooled in the Klamath Falls school districts. In 1942, while at Klamath Union High School, O'Callaghan wrote a weekly column about students activities for the Klamath Falls Herald and News. In 1950, he earned a bachelor's degree in Arts and Letters at the University of Oregon. While there, O'Callaghan became a member of Phi Kappa Psi social fraternity, which played a strong role in his life. In Fort Bidwell, he was past secretary of the Surprise Valley School District, a member of the Modoc County Historical Society and contributor to its publication, and a captain of the Fort Bidwell Volunteer Fire Department. When then Gov. Ronald Reagan appointed him a director of the Modoc District Fair Board, Reagan came to Modoc County to swear O'Callaghan into office. O'Callaghan's interest in orchid horticulture included raising these special plants. He authored an article in orchid growing at 4,000 feet elevation, published in a national orchid journal. Also an amateur photographer, his work specialized in science sites along the California-Oregon border east of the Cascade Range. However, he did produce award-winning photographs of his orchids. O'Callaghan never married, and is survived by his brother, Jerry, of Bethesda, MD. It is suggested remembrances be sent to Oregon Phi Kappa Psi Association, PO Box 2505, Portland, OR 97208, or to any charity of choice. Dewey H. Phillips Dewey H. Phillips, age 72, Nubieber, CA. passed away in his home October 5, 2002. Graveside services will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery, McArthur, CA. Oct. 11, 2002 at 3 p.m. Mr. Phillips was born in Oakland, CA Aug. 10, 1928 to Dewey H., Sr and Patricia Jacobson Phillips. He was reared in California and attended schools there. He worked for the Great Northern Railroad in Nubieber and the mill at Little Valley until he retired. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Wes Murer of McArthur, CA; son and daughter-in-law Ramon and Pat Phillips of Arizona; three grandsons, Jonathan Phillips, Burney, CA; Todd Murer and wife Elizabeth of Sacramento; Forrest and Michelle Murer, Napa, CA.; grandchildren Abigail and Collin Murer of Sacramento; brother Richard Mageti and family and many cousins in Porterville, CA. Steve R. DeSmith A graveside service for Steve R. DeSmith will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eagleville Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra will conduct the service with a gathering to follow at the Eagleville General Store Cafe in Eagleville. Mr. DeSmith, 44, passed away March 19, 2002 at his home in Santa Cruz, CA. He was born in North Hollywood, CA on October 23, 1957 to Rod and Erica DeSmith. He was a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and Hasting College of Law. He was an attorney for 20 years and a trial lawyer with the U.S. Department of Labor. He is survived by his wife Tami Grove and two daughters Jenna, age 7 and Claire, age 4, all of Santa Cruz, CA; his mother and father Rod and Erica DeSmith of North Hills, CA; a twin brother Michael of Beaverton, OR; sister Lynn DeSmith of VanNuys, CA and brother Gary of Ulysses, Texas; and mother-in-law Kathleen Grove of Cedarville. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, David I. Grove. October 17, 2002 Theodora R. Buhrman Theodora Buhrman, known as "Teddy," a resident of Alturas since the summer of 1968, passed away at Modoc Medical Center on October 12, 2002, after a long illness. She was born in Aurora, Nebraska on September 3, 1922, one of two daughters to Theodora and Verla Roberts. She has a son Richard Romero, three grandchildren Shawn, Jacob, Jessica, and one great-grandson Kyle, all living in Southern California. She married Virgil Buhrman on June 24, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hawthorne, CA. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Lucille and first husband Vincent. Memorial Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alturas at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2002. Kenneth Lamonte Madison Alturas resident Kenneth Lamonte Madison, 88, passed away October 11, 2002 at Alturas, CA. He was born November 28, 1913 in Vallejo, CA. Mr. Madison had been a Modoc resident for the past 18 years, after relocating from Southern California. Services were held on Wednesday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m. at graveside at the Alturas Cemetery. Mr. Madison is survived by his daughters Katherine L. Anderson of Alturas; JoAnne Kinney of Ridgecrest, CA.; grandchildren, Amanda Lee Kinney of Ridgecrest, Shelli Kay Anderson Prawel and Erick Kinney of Alturas; brother Jack Madison and nieces and nephews in Hemet, CA. Arrangements have been made by Kerr Mortuary, Alturas. October 24, 2002 October 31, 2002 Emma Petersen Long-time Canby resident Emma Petersen passed away Monday morning, October 28, 2002, at Applewood Inn Long Term Care in Redding, CA, just a few days shy of her 94th birthday. Born to James and Bena (Thompson) Petersen on November 3, 1908, in Salina, Kansas, she was the youngest of their four children. Her parents came to America around 1900, from their native Denmark. Emma moved to Merino, Colorado with her family, where they farmed for several years. She attended grade school there and the family later moved to a farm near Kersey, Colo. Emma played on the Kersey High School basketball team and graduated from Kersey High in 1926. After high school, she completed a secretarial course at Adrian's Commercial College in Greeley, Colo., where she later made her home. After completion of the secretarial course, Emma accepted a position in the Placement Bureau of Colorado State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Colorado. In addition to her work, Emma completed several college courses. In the 1940s Emma was a USO hostess and helped entertain military personnel from Ft. Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne, Wyoming. In December 1948, she was granted a three-month leave of absence. At that time she went to Canby, California to visit her brother and family. While there, she was offered and accepted a position, and immediately went to work in the office of Ralph Smith Lumber Company as secretary and statistical typist. The Company was later sold to Loveness Lumber Company where Emma continued to work in the same position. Loveness Lumber Co. mill was destroyed by fire. It was then that Emma accepted a position with the U.S. Forest Service as District Clerk of the Devil's Garden Ranger District, Modoc County, Canby, CA, from which she retired in 1972. Emma was preceded in death by her two sisters, Marie Miller and Joanna Beers and brother Hans V. "Pete" Petersen. She is survived by her nieces, Colleen Rutherford and Nancy Phelps of Redding, CA; Jenne Barrett of Florida, nephews Jerry Petersen of Redding and Jimmie Beers of Craig, Colo. At her request their will be no services. Burial will be at the Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley, Colo Darlyn Dee Smith Alturas resident Darlyn Dee Smith, 63, passed away at her home on October 24, 2002. Known as "Dee" to her many friends and co-workers, Mrs. Smith had welcomed many newborns into the world as an Obstetric Technician for over 20 years at Modoc Medical Center and assisted many new mothers in adjusting to their new roles. Born Darlyn Dee Ashpole in Kansas City, Missouri on January 16, 1939, "Dee" completed high school in San Anselmo, CA as a student at Mt. Tamalpais Union and Drake High Schools. Dee and Robert Wayne "Brandy" Smith were married in Reno, Nevada on May 1, 1971. Mrs. Smith had made Modoc County her home for the past 30 years, where she was involved in her community and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She became a certified nurses aide, obstetric tech and also held the position of Central Supply aide at Modoc Medical Center in Alturas, CA. An avid bowler over the years, she held membership in the Women's Bowling Conference and belonged to the local bowling league. She was also an active volunteer supporter of the Alturas Junior Bowlers program which provided local youths a chance to learn how to bowl and enjoy the after school program and awards. Musically inclined, she played the piano and enjoyed listening to music. She loved to "spoil her grandkids," and enjoyed cooking and baking. Among her interests were sewing, reading, swimming, knitting, playing bingo, traveling and taking cruises. She is survived by her husband, Robert Wayne "Brandy" Smith of Alturas; her mother Billie Ashpole of Cedarville; son Darroll Newton and daughter-in-law Vicky Newton of Scotts Valley, CA; granddaughters Erin and Katie Newton of Scotts Valley, CA and grandson Andrew Newton of Murray, Utah; cousins Barbara of Idaho and Dawn of San Diego and relatives Shirley, David and Carl Danberg of Vacaville. A memorial service, given by the family, will be announced at a future date. Mrs. Smith had battled against cancer. Donations in her memory may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 3290 Bechelli Lane, Redding, CA 96002. Gella E. Vick Eagleville resident Gella Ellanora Vick, 84, passed away October 28, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital, Washoe County, Reno, Nevada. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 1 at Kerr Mortuary Chapel in Alturas from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Services will be held at the Eagleville Community Church on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. Burial at the Eagleville Cemetery.
