Modoc County Record - December 5, 2002 Richard Eugene Smith Alturas resident Richard Eugene Smith, 89, died of natural causes on November 24, 2002 at Modoc Medical Center, Alturas, CA. Gene spent his entire life in Modoc County. Mr. Smith was born on September 20, 1913 at Buck Creek Station on Fandango Pass and graduated from Modoc High School in Alturas. He married Betsy Irene Benner in Reno, NV on June 19, 1937. They had one son Roland. Gene was a stubborn, hard working man who worked through the Great Depression and survived a chilling bout with cancer in later years. He was a hunter and fisherman who was able to tell many stories of his exploits and of his adventures in the woods and on the streams. His grandson remembers him most for deer and chuckar hunting, their yearly motorcycle trips, camping and fishing and his ability to communicate with dogs. Gene was a lifetime member of the Alturas Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 1756 and was very proud of that. He was teasing and had a great sense of humor. He touched everyone with his stories. He always said, "At my funeral don't cry, just smile and say old grandpa lived a good life." Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife Irene in 1995. He is survived by his son Roland Smith of Alturas, grandson Robert Smith, and his two great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Elliott Smith of Maui, Hawaii. Memorial Services were held at the Alturas Elks Lodge on Friday, November 29, 2002. Georgia Genevieve Stanley A life-long resident of Surprise Valley, Georgia Genevieve Stanley, 94, passed away of natural causes at her home Saturday, November 23, 2002, with her grandchildren in attendance. Georgia,"Goppy," as she was known to her grandchildren, was born in New Pine Creek, Oregon, September 27, 1908 to Mildred G and John Urban Gentry. She was the eldest of three children. Georgia attended school in New Pine Creek, Santa Rosa, and Cedarville. She married Earl Heath Stanley on December 27, 1926. They had one child, Donna Fae. Mrs. Stanley was a 50-plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star and completed all the chairs. She was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Cedarville for 32 years. Mrs. Stanley's love of life was her family and grandchildren. When not working, her spare time was spent sewing for her grandchildren. She designed and created each of her granddaughters' wedding gowns. Georgia loved the mountains and the outdoors. She and her family spent countless hours picnicking and camping in the Warner Mountains. She is survived by two brothers Lair Gentry of Cedarville and Layton Gentry of New Pine Creek, OR; four grandchildren: Rick Stevenson of Cedarville, Wes and Dige Cook of Cedarville, Sammy and Tom Picotte of Eagleville, Gae and Carl Quigley of Meridian, ID; one great-granddaughter Stacy Cook of Chico, CA.; two nieces Karen Gentry of Lakeview OR. and Lynne Minto of Cedarville. She was preceded in death by her husband Heath Stanley and daughter Donna Stevenson. Graveside services and interment were held Tuesday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cedarville Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra officiated the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Cedarville Fire Department or to the Cedarville Community Church. Donald S. 'Don' Logan Donald S. 'Don' Logan, age 78, died Thursday, November 28, 2002, at the Lake District Long Term Care Facility in Lakeview, OR. Mr. Logan was born April 17, 1924 in Lohrville, Iowa to Stanley S. and Mildred Ruth VanWegan. Don was raised in Sunnyvale, CA. and attended schools in San Jose. He graduated from San Jose State with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He served in the US Navy in the South Pacific on a P.T. Tender. Don was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945. Don had been very active in politics, serving as mayor of Sunnyvale three different times. He was mayor 1967-1968, 1970-1971 and 1976-1977. He had been employed by Westinghouse as an Industrial Engineer for 43 years, prior to his retirement in 1982. Don enjoyed hunting geese and ducks and enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed Mexico. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lakeview Elk's Lodge and the Sunnyvale Athletic Social Club. He was also a very big fan of George W. Bush. He loved his car GINGER. He was married to Janet Gillis on September 23, 1995 at Lake Tahoe. Survivors include his wife Janet of Willow Ranch; two daughters, Jane Garee of Keno, OR. and Carol Fargher of Fremont, CA.; grandchildren, Tom Garee of Keno, Michele Gonzalez-Johnson of Arcata, CA. and her husband Matt; Johnathan Mulcock and his wife Susie of Fremont, CA.; stepsons Phillip Gillis of Woodland, CA. and Ray Roberts of Cottonwood; great grandsons, Hank Garee of Keno and John Rogers of Arcata; sisters, Jean Anderson and her husband John of San Jose and Dale Pratt of Kertistown, Hawaii; Mother-in-law Helen Wachter of Woodland and a brother-in-law Alan Wachter of Napa; along with many nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial gathering will be held at the Logan home at Willow Ranch Sunday, December 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. and a second gathering will be held in Sunnyvale, Sunday, December 15, at 4 p.m. at 859 Rubis Drive, Sunnyvale. December 12, 2002 Gregory James 'Jimmy' Alves Gregory James "Jimmy" Alves, 60, a prominent Lakeview rancher, died on December 9, 2002 from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in Lakeview, Oregon. Jimmy was born in San Mateo, CA. on December 13, 1941, to Gregory James and Bernice Silva Alves. He spent the first 27 years of his life farming and ranching on the California Coast in Half Moon Bay. Jimmy married Sue Ellen Smith, of Hayward, CA. in Reno, NV. on July 13, 1963. In 1968, Jimmy and Sue and their two sons, Donald and Randy moved to Lakeview, OR. to establish their own family ranch. After five years, a son Rodney was born. Jimmy was a respected and well-loved rancher. He was a man who loved his family and friends, his horses and cattle, his dogs and his ranching way of life. The Alves' ranch was the spot for fellow ranchers to gather for team roping, friendship, barbecues, and good times. Jimmy and Sue have sponsored many series of roping over the years. They have hosted five annual link and loop competitions. Jimmy enjoyed competing in U.S. team roping events for many years. Besides roping, Jimmy loved a good game of Piedro with his sons and friends. Jimmy served as Lake County Jr. Rodeo president and Lake County round-up president in 1997. He served his community and fellow ranchers in many kind hearted ways. Jimmy's beloved grandchildren have wonderful memories of their "Papa Jimmy"...He taught them all to ride horses and rope. They loved it when they got to help gather cows, fix fences, or irrigate. They were his very best roping "partners." Jimmy lived a full and happy life and lived every day as he wanted. There are so many that have been honored to call him a friend. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Sue Alves of Lakeview; sons and daughter in-laws: Donald and Nicki Alves, Rod and Carley Alves of Lakeview, Randy and Denise Alves of Klamath Falls, grandchildren; Jason Alves of U.S.N. Jerry Dean Winters Former Alturas resident and Modoc High graduate Jerry Dean Winters, age 36, passed away December 5, 2002 in Fresno, California. A memorial service was held at Christian Life Assembly Church in Fresno on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. Mr. Winters was born in Redding, California on August 27, 1966 and moved to Alturas, CA in 1967. He graduated from Modoc High in 1984 and was employed as a sale representative with E.F.C.O. Systems for concrete construction out of Fresno. He is survived by his wife Jodie and two daughters Jori, age 9, and Jordyn, age 6; his father Bob Winters of Alturas; mother Beverly Winters of Redding, CA; two brothers, Danny Winters of Auburn, CA and Daren Winters of Redding, CA.; sisters Ronda Barrington of Phoenix, Arizona and Robin Rodgers of Redding; two sisters-in-law Susan Winters of Auburn and Deanna Winters of Redding; numerous aunts and uncles and seven nieces and seven nephews. December 19, 2002 William Robert Reynolds Former Surprise Valley rancher and business owner William Robert Reynolds of Napa, California died December 17, 2002 at the age of 73. He is survived by his loving wife Arlene, of 53 years, daughters Debbie Bicondoa and grandson Ryan of Lovelock, Nevada and Susan Dixon and grandson Matthew of Newburg, Oregon, son Doug of Glendale, Arizona, sister Betty Arvedi of Napa, and numerous nieces and nephews Bill was born September 5, 1929 in Hubbard, Oregon. In 1970, he moved his family to Surprise Valley to realize his dream of operating his own cattle and hay ranch A man of many talents, interests and accomplishments, Bill never backed away from hard work or life's many challenges. In addition to cattle and hay ranching, he drove truck, owned and operated a ready-mix concrete plant, and built two homes for his family. His interests included team roping, hunting, fishing and watching his grandsons play baseball. Maurice Eugene Wescott Former Modoc County rancher Maurice Eugene Wescott entered to rest on December 12, 2002 in Sacramento, CA. Services were held on December 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Capital Estates Clubhouse, Sacramento Mr. Wescott was born September 3, 1920 in Fresno, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Nina Wescott. Mr. Wescott was in the first graduating class at C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento in 1938. He was also a member of the US Navy from July 1942 to October 1945. He was an active member of the West Sacramento Moose Lodge, 1762. After 25 years of ranching in Modoc County, Maurice returned to Sacramento where he met and married Beverly. His life was fulfilled visiting with all of his family and many friends. He also enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. He will be missed daily. He is survived by his beloved wife Beverly J. Wescott of 32 years, father of Mark (Linda), Maure (Larry), Trudee, Sharon (Chris) and Roger (Rhonda), grandpa to 14 wonderful grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Welch Alturas resident Mary D. Welch passed away December 20, 2002 at Modoc Medical Center, Alturas, CA. Services will be held Friday, December 27 in Ft. Bragg, CA. Born Mary W. Davis on November 29, 1920 in Libertyville, Iowa, she graduated with her bachelor of arts degree from State University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. For over 30 years she worked as a clinical laboratory technician for the State of California and Biolaboraties at San Bernardino, CA. Mrs. Welch was noted for her Rosarian and Gardenia cultures and was a Bluebird fancier. She and Chuck Welch were married in West Liberty, Iowa on Sept., 1, 1938. A member of Modoc County CattleWomen, she leaves her many family members and friends in Modoc, her home for the past 25 years. Douglas Albert McGarva Former Modoc County resident Doug McGarva of Igo Ono, California, passed away on December 18, 2002 at the age of 70 years. Doug was born to Bob and Mary McGarva on July 3, 1932 in Likely, CA and was reared in Likely. He attended South Fork School in Likely and graduated from Modoc High School in Alturas. He spent his early years working on various ranches in the area. Whether putting up loose hay or breaking colts, ranching always was a part of Mr. McGarva's life. He was a member of the old Likely Roping Club and a past vice-president of the club. He enjoyed roping and participating in rodeos. In 1950, Mr. McGarva won the All Around Cowboy title and three saddles at the annual Likely Rodeo. He left Modoc County a few years after graduating to relocate to Shasta County where he became a logging truck driver until his retirement. Mr. McGarva is survived by his children Richard "Rocky" of Carson City, Nevada; Jim of Salem, OR; Dan of Reno, NV; Beth of Ashville, N.C.; brothers Irvin McGarva, Likely, CA; John McMullan, Lovelock, NV; Kenny McMullan of Reno, NV.; sister Loutie Anne of Chico, CA; first cousin Velma McCrary of Canby, CA; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. McGarva was preceded in death by his parents Bob McGarva and Mary McMullan and sister Janice (McGarva) Tarp. At his request, no funeral services will be held and cremation has taken place.
