'Hoss' Salters Kenneth Bryant "Hoss" Salters, a resident of Bieber, CA. died suddenly on July 18, 2002 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, CA. He was 41. Hoss was born in Fresno, California on September 25, 1960. He moved to Bieber as a child and graduated from Big Valley High School in 1978. He and Lori Gerig were married on June 10, 1980. In 1981, they moved to Weed, where he attended and graduated from College of the Siskiyous. He and his family lived in Siskiyou County where he was employed in the lumber industry for 20 years, before moving back to Bieber in August of 2001. Mr. Salters was employed at Modoc County Alcohol and Drug Services as a Prevention Specialist. He was also a licensed foster parent for the past 13 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, all types of sports and music. But, his greatest joy came from meeting and visiting with people of all walks of life. A Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at the Bieber Memorial Park. Kerr Mortuary, Alturas, CA, was in charge of Crematory arrangements. Survivors include his wife Lori of Bieber; a son and daughter-in-law Nathan and Janice Hans of Sacramento; daughters Kassidy of Sacramento; Hilary of Bend, OR; Abby of Bieber and Mickiela Sanchez of Bieber. His parents, Hugh "Dob" and Pat Salters of Calder, Idaho; brothers and sisters-in-law Brent and Michelle Salters of Adin; Mike and Tasha Salters of Bieber; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Leslie and Ron Rhodes of Bieber and Cathy and John Landoski of Adin. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law Peter and Lynne Gerig of Bieber; and brother and sister-in-law Bryan and Shannon Gerig of Bieber. His nieces and nephews include: Tristen, Deiter, Kolby, Shae and Isaiah Salters; Nicholas and Rhett Rhoades; Elizabeth Landoski; and Kellen and Konnor Gerig. Olive Lorene Stevenson Olive Lorene Stevenson, formerly of Alturas, passed away in Grants Pass, Ore. on July 29, 2002. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the Latter-day Saints Church, 1969 Williams Highway, Grants Pass, Oregon. A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Pueblo, Colorado. Born Olive Lorene Mills in Emerson, Mills County, Iowa on November 26, 1913, to Moses Franklin Mills and Alice Hyvola (Hanchett) Mills, she was reared on a farm in Kansas and learned work ethics early in life. She suffered many hardships, including the deaths of her father and mother when she was age three. But, Lorene never lost her love for her fellow man. Lorene worked with developmentally challenged individuals for many years, and in several nursing homes and hospitals. She was known for her compassion and kindness to all with whom she associated. Over the years, she was employed with Colorado State Home and Training School in Grand Junction, Colo.; Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital, Las Vegas, Nev. She "loved" working in the newborn nursery and in Obstetrics at the Moab Hospital, Moab, Utah. She and Donald B. Murphy were married in Concordia, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 1967. After her retirement, she served multiple missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked with the LDS Relief Society. She served her first mission in Texas. She relocated to Alturas in 1980. After her marriage to John M. Stevenson on Feb. 22, 1986 in Alturas, Calif., they both served missions in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Florida. Lorene was very fond of gardening, wilderness walks, picnics, and wildlife observation. She was proficient in crochet, embroidery and quilting, which she gave as gifts to her loved ones and friends. She celebrated life and frequently made statements of encouragement to others, who were facing challenges. She was very dedicated and determined to succeed in all of her undertakings. Lorene and John resided in Alturas until their move to Grants Pass, Ore. in 2000. She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Alice Ann Murphy and Marilynn Kay (Murphy) David, and her first husband Donald B. Murphy. She lovingly leaves behind her husband John M. Stevenson of Grants Pass, Oregon; two children, Donallorene Bledsoe of Overton, Nevada and son Donald R. Murphy of Alturas, Calif.; sister Mildred Fick of Pueblo, Colo.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Hull and Hull Mortuary of Grants Pass is in charge of arrangements. Phylis May Bowers Services for Phylis May Bowers will be held at graveside today, August 1 at the Cedarville, CA Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra will officiate the 10:00 a.m. service. Mrs. Bowers passed away July 28, 2002 in Alturas, CA, after a long illness. She was born Phylis May Hobbs on November 9, 1919 in Lake City, CA. She graduated from Surprise Valley High School in 1938. She married Albert Blake Bowers in Reno, Nevada on August 21, 1945 and was a homemaker. Albert's work as a brand inspector and ranch manager found them away from Modoc County for 46 years. After his death in 1984, she returned. She had been a resident at Modoc Medical Center's Skilled Nursing Facility, Alturas. She is survived by her son Frank of Gonzales, CA; sister Barbara and husband Steve Slinkard of Alturas; sister-in-law Marie Winnop of Orland, CA; nephews Don and wife Bonnie Slinkard and Gary and wife Susan Slinkard all of Alturas; niece Wanda Slinkard of Reno, Nevada and numerous nieces and nephews. Two older sisters preceded her in death. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Federated Church or any charity of the donor's choice. Leo John Gysin, Jr Leo John Gysin, Jr. passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2002, in Salem, Oregon. He was born in Alturas, CA., on Aug. 16, 1954, and had lived in Salem for the last 17 years. He married Kimberly on June 1, 1983. Leo had been a realtor for 15 years and owned and operated Valley Realty Group, Inc., with his wife, Kim, for the past six years. Survivors include his wife, Kimberly; sons, Michael and Steven, both of Salem, and Nathan of Florida; mother, Dorothy of Stayton, OR.; brother, Greg of Salem; sisters, Laine Loscar of Salem, Eve O'Connor of Gates, OR., Margaret Ferguson of Vya, NV., Holly of Germany, and Cindy Fields of Tampa, FL.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid pilot who enjoyed flying and working on his airplanes. He looked forward to his yearly trip to the Osh Kosh EAA Fly-In and his annual trips to Alaska. He was a member of the AOPA and the Cessna Pilots' Association, as well as various realtor organizations. He was also excitedly anticipating the birth of his first grandchildren, a set of twins, due in October. A celebration of his life was held July 13 at First Baptist Church in Stayton, OR. Burial was at St. Boniface Cemetery in Sublimity, OR. Arrangements were by Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton. Vera Irene Worrell Tiedtke A memorial service for Vera Irene Worrell Tiedtke of Alturas will be held Friday, August 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Church of Christ, Warner St., Alturas. Dewey Potter will officiate. Mrs. Tiedtke, a resident of Alturas for the past seven years, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, CA. on July 5, 2002. She was born Vera Irene Worrell in Nebraska on March 19, 1910, where she finished high school and married Arthur L. Tiedtke, Sr. in December of 1929 in Tyndal, South Dakota. They lived in Sonora for many years where Mrs. Tiedtke was a homemaker. She enjoyed making crafts and enjoyed all children. She was also an avid reader and member of the Church of Christ. Her husband preceded her in death October of 1993. She is survived by her daughter Lois and son-in-law Dick Miller of Aurora, CO.; daughter Sandra and son-in-law Emery Hendricksen of Sandstone, Minnesota; daughter AnnaMarie and son-in-law Douglas Thorp of Alturas, CA.; son-in law Enrico Chiodo, Sr. of Carmichael, CA; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren and three sisters Betty Marksmeier and Hazel Worrell of Wiesner, Nebraska and Eve Friberg of Stanton, Neb. August 8, 2002 Gerald 'Jerry' D. MacDonnell Gerald "Jerry" Douglas MacDonnell, 58, died on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at his home in Ione, CA. Mr. MacDonnell was born on Jan. 11, 1944 in Lodi, CA. He was a self-employed backhoe operator for 10 years and worked in the construction field for 25 years. He lived in Amador County for 40 years, was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Native Sons of the Golden West, Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation and loved hunting. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Jennifer . MacDonnell of Alturas; son Tim MacDonnell of Alturas, CA; father and mother James and Elaine MacDonnell of Ione; sister Judie Graves of Pine Grove; brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Peggy MacDonnell of Stockton; brother and sister-in-law, Monte and Patty MacDonnell of Ione; brother, Michael MacDonnell of Ione; and grandchildren Wyatt, Brenndon and Cole. August 15, 2002 Elizabeth Christina Kresge Elizabeth Christina Kresge of Adin passed away August 7, 2002 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, CA. She was 86. Born Elizabeth Christina Walters to Stanley and Bella Walters on March 23, 1916 in Parkdale, Oregon, she attended high school in Hood River, Ore. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR and taught Home Economics in Portland, OR for eight years, before moving to California, where she was hired as a University of California Demonstration Agent in Modoc County. She met and married Owen S. Kresge in Modoc County and the two were married on December 21, 1946 in Paradise, CA. They made their home at their ranch in Round Valley, north of Adin. Mrs. Kresge was a member of several organizations including Order of the Eastern Star, Big Valley Garden Club, Lookout Grange, 50-Plus Club and Rebekah Lodge. She also served as a 4-H sewing leader. She is survived by her son Paul Kresge of Forest Lake, MN; daughter Jane Copp of Adin, CA.; brother, Jack Walters of LaJolla, CA; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband Owen preceded her in death on January 31, 1993. No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to a charity or scholarship fund of the donor's choice. Janice Kay Hart Native Modoc'er Janice Kay Hart passed away in Brookings, Oregon on August 1, 2002. She was 66. Modoc residents will recall Mrs. Hart's fine wood crafts, as a master crafter, which she sold at craft gatherings. She worked as a team with her husband Grady, toward craft project completions. Born Janice Kay Chapman in Alturas, CA on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1935, she graduated from Surprise Valley High School in Cedarville. During her adult years, she had a varied working life including owning a restaurant and hardware store in Dorris, CA to working at a fish hatchery in Brookings, OR. Mrs. Hart had also enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling. She and Grady Hart were married on May 13, 1962, in Reno, Nev She is survived by her husband Grady Hart of Brookings, OR; daughter Candy and son-in-law Kim Maidens of Lake City, CA; cousin Phyllis Harris; granddaughters, Missy, Brandie, Mindy and Melanie; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Lacie, Taylor, Katie, Sierra, Natalie and Ian and her ex-husband Mutt Vermillion.
