NEGLEY, 27 > years of age, and Nora > > Ethel LEONARD, 23 years of age, both residents of > Alturas, Modoc County. Harry McGrath was a true entrepreneur in Alturas. He owned a saloon with bis brother, later sold automobiles with an Overland dealership, and then he started the Gravel and sand pit on highway 299 just north of Alturas. He was a large man and had a fondness for the drink and just fooling around. He was a good hunter and fisherman and enjoyed those activities. He had been in WWI and had a large scar, from being wounded in actioln on his shoulder which looked horrible. He was willing to strip his shirt and show everybody that scar at the least provocation. His wife, Ella Denson, came from real pioneer stock. Her father lived in a cabin using Chimney Rock, highway 299 north of Alturas, for the chimney for his fireplace. She had a brother, Tom, who ran a hardware store in town. That man said the least that was possible for him to carry on his business. We called him old sour Tom. J.T. Negley was also a go-getter. He was the postmaster for many rears but was also instrumental in starting the Modoc County Co-op in Alturas. This became the single largest distributing business in Modoc County under his leadership. However, as most businesses did, it too died out in the 30's during the depression. He was a tall, spare man, with a very dry sense of humor. He was well respected in Modoc County. His wife was very prim, and always looked as if she had just walked out of the hairdressers. Every store clerk in town bowed to Mrs. Negley. Ron Morgan >
