    3. June 14, 2005 Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, a weekly newspaper, published in Alturas, CA. The following is transcribed from the June 2, 2005 issue. Looking Back 91 Years Ago – 1914 HEARTY cooperation last year between forest officers and the public resulted in a splendid fire season and Forest Supervisor Chris Rachford is hoping for similar success this season. Last year 49 fires were reprted anad they were held within one acre apiece. 71 Years Ago – 1934 MODOC UNION High School teachers have been re-hired for next fall and include Ross Stephens; Principal; L.J. Austin, Elizabeth Fisher, Leon B. Lewis, L.W. Musick, Margaret McKowin, I.C. Elliot, Ruth Nielsen, Marks Smith, Mable Stollar. The New Pine Creek branch teachers are P.A. Sample and Lelville Hoyt…. Nolan Bannister was flying flowers to Alturas on Decoration Day when his plane nosed over on the muddy landing field. This was Banty’s first accident in eight years of flying. 51 Years Ago – 1954 THE AVERAGE snow depth on Cedar Pass is only 2.9 inches and well below the 29.5 inches measured there at this time in 1953…. AF of L mill workers at White Pine Lumber Company have voted 39 to 24 to walk out on strike this week…. Wakefield Day has been proclaimed for the opening of the City Softball League, honoring Bill Wakefield, City Recreation Director…. Temperatures have been below freezing in Alturas for the first three days in June. 31 Years Ago – 1974 UP-TO-THE-minute election returns on cable television in Alturas are promised as a special Tuesday feature of the newly launched Alturas TV system. I attended elementary school with Martha Jean Stephens. Harry Wandling replaced Mr. Stephens as principal. Elizabeth Fisher was my English teacher in High school and she was one of the best. She was tall, Southern, very formal, and a real stickler for details of the language. Marks Smith was my favorite. He taught History (my college major) and later was named principal of the school. L.J. Austin was the Ag teacher and he too became principal of Modoc Union High School. I have already talked quite a bit about Leon B. Lewis, music teacher, and P.A. Sample who was transferred from New Pine Creek to Modoc Union High school, when the branch high school was closed.. We were lucky to have some mighty fine teachers in that little high school of 170 students grades 9 through 12. See you all again next week. Ron Morgan
