San Diego Chapter reports that they have closed their shelter as of 7 pm Tuesday night. Most residents found alternate housing for the night. Casework will continue this morning. Minor local media interest. Riverside county Chapter has their shelter still on standby. Morongo Basin Chapter has their shelter open at the Yucca Valley Community Center with about 40 people in the shelter at 11pm. The fire is continuing to burn. The chapter has been on the LA media with great success and is using the appropriate fundraising messages. They expect to begin casework this morning if conditions improve. San Gabriel Chapter assisted Morongo Basin by writing press brief last night and will assist today in additional releases that will be distributed to LA media. The American Red Cross on Thursday said that one evacuation center was open as of 11:00 a.m. PST to assist the victims of the Paradise wildfire burning in the Morongo Valley region of Southern California. The American Red Cross reports that nearly 75 residents were in the shelter overnight located at 57090 Twenty-nine Palms Highway in Yucca Valley (Thomas Guide page: 4957 H-2) in San Bernardino County. Red Cross officials said the shelter will remain operational until noon Thursday, and then be placed on stand-by status. "We had people actually sleeping in their cars in the shelter parking lot because they were too tired to deal with anything," said Shirley Peters, the chapter executive of the Morongo Basin Chapter of the American Red Cross. American Red Cross staff and volunteers have served 260 meals and 500 snacks, provided 12 comfort kits including toothbrushes and hygiene products, and offered mental health contacts to those affected by the Morongo Valley wildfire. Displaced residents also brought their pets to the shelter, with one resident bringing 14 animals that included dogs, cats and birds. While the American Red Cross does not allow pets in shelters, special arrangements were made and every pet was cared for just outside the shelter by Red Cross volunteers, allowing the residents to get some much-needed rest. Firefighters are currently using the American Red Cross shelter as a staging area and a place to rest. Chapters throughout the state are encouraged to push out wildfire safety tips. More information to follow later. Chris
