    3. May Yates was the proprietor of the New Era. Later she joined in partnership with Colonel Thompson from the Alturas Plaindealer. This paper was later published by the French family until Marcie (Gop) Sloss purchased both the Surprise Valley Record and the Plaindealer and combined them into the Modoc County Record.
