Looking Back 113 Years Ago – 1894 MONEY IS tighter than the proverbial tick these days in Alturas….Frank Sunnyfrank reported seeing two big deer near Alturas the other day that caused several venison seekers to drop everything and take on the pursuit….Will Rachford has been employed by the soda factory here to turn out about 100 dozen soft drinks for the summer traffic….Hironymous and Poor of Surprise Valley have about 600 horses ready for a long drive to the eastern markets….The San Francisco Chronicle has reported Modoc stockmen have been nearly wiped out because of the heavy spring storms. 93 Years Ago – 1914 JOHN SLY of Cedarville reports that the road over to Cedarville will soon be passable fro auto machines…. The high school boys have contracted with the NCO to fare them to New Pine Creek in May for a few days of fishing. Professor Rose will accompany them and the NCO will charge $2 for the round trip each. Fishing season opens Saturday and our County Clerk is busy dispensing licenses at the rate of $1 fore everyone over 18 years of age….The Alturas Grammar School will close for the summer on May 8. 73 Years Ago – 1934 THE CALIFORNIA Public Service has painted the streetlights on Main Street a dazzling illuminating white. The installation streetlights by CPS has been one of the greatest protections Alturas has had in preventing street crimes….The fishing season opened Tuesday and despite high water there were many reports of angler easily obtaining their 25 fish limit….There are three candidates contesting Sheriff Sharp for his job and they include Cahn Fogerty, H.L. Payne, and Homer Beeson….The community is hoping that Dr. Paul McKenney will locate permanently to Alturas after taking over his brother’s practice, Dr. Phil McKenney, while the latter was doing postgraduate surgery in Chicago over the past two months. 53 Years Ago – 1954 ROGER JESSUP, a Los Angeles Supervisor, has donated $10,000 to the Alturas swimming pool fund because of the “fine treatment received while a patient in the Modoc Medical Center”….The Newell area has given a 3-1 majority to the bond issue to build a new $130,000 school house….The first forest fires of the season are reported this week by the USFS….The Modoc County Community Concert has subscribed 450 members for the 1954 season. …Ken Horton will open Cedar Plunge baths in Surprise Valley this week….Temperatures were in the 80’s in Alturas this week….Modoc scored a 53 to 51 track victory over Lakeview….The Alturas Tigers took a 6-1 decision over the Mt. Shasta Eagles Sunday. 44 Years Ago – 1963 A PLAN to unify all the schools in Surprise Valley will be submitted to the voters there this summer….Chamber manager Bud Van Horn this week sent some Modoc rocks to the Timbuktu (near Grass Valley) to help rebuild a historical building there….A plan is being proposed by the Modoc School department to create a Junior High School District in Modoc County.
