Monday, May 07, 2007 “Looking Back” is a regular feature of the Modoc County record, published weekly in Alturas, California. The following is transcribed from the May 3, 2007 issue. Looking Back 113 Years Ago – 1894 A SCHOOLHOUSE that will cost $2,500 will be built at Amedee….Quite a wagon load of ladies left here last Wednesday for the World’s Fair. Among them were Mrs. L.C. Estes, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. John McGahey and Mrs. Henry Hilton. They will no doubt have a nice trip….Surprise Valley is already growing many vegetables, proving that this truly is the garden spot of Modoc County….Canby, Cedarville, Davis Cree and Alturas will all have baseball teams and some good Sunday games are anticipated. There are those that will complain that games should not be played on the Sabbath but we feel it’s a good form of recreation and exercise – as long as the participants attend church before the games. 93 Years Ago – 1914 TEMPERATURES ARE in the 80’s in Alturas during this first week of may….the high school boys brought back several sacks full of rtrout from their three-day fishing trip to New Pine Creek on the NCO….J.D. Flournoy has been seriously injured in an auto machine accident in Palo Alto. 73 Years Ago – 1934 HARRY FLOURNOY, Herman Weber and Howard Essex will represent Modoc in the Chico track meet Saturday in “A” class. John Williams was the only “B” trackman to qualify by way of winning the 660….Alturas grocery prices this week saw eggs at 16 cents a dozen, hamburger 23 cents a pound, bananas 4 pounds for 19 cents and coffee is 35 cents a pound….20 tons of fence posts went through Alturas for Vya, Nevada where the government plans to fence off a huge reserve for antelope….Rabbits and squirrels have literally taken over the land at Likely and one can only wonder what their populations will be in another 20 years. 53 Years Ago – 1954 ORVILLE SPATH is in charge of the Rotary Kid’s Fish Derby at Pine Creek Reservoir May 15….The first television in Modoc may result from hearings in Washington DC this week where KFTV of Klamath Falls is making application for a broadcast permit…. Loveness Lumber has paid $45 per M bd. Feet of ponderosa pine at a recent oral auction by the forest service…. Eleanor Van Horn, June Eaton, Margaret Worrell and Hazel Schorch wee members of the women’s league champions bowling team sponsored by the Pioneer Inn….Alturas Tigers crushed Lakeview 16-1. 44 Years Ago – 1963 A SPOKESMAN from the Bureau of Prisoners has told the Board of Supervisors that to repair the 50 Year old Modoc Jail under the courthouse to state standards would be to throw good money after bad. He strongly advises to build a new jail in the immediate future. “A $200,000 building today would cost about $500,000 in ten years. You won’t be saving a dime to delay a building program any longer”….Trout up to five pounds are being taken with relative ease at Doris reservoir these days….Cheerleaders at MUHS are Candy Flournoy, Kelle Sigler, Susan Hays, Pat Buckhouse and alternate Lois Wickenden. Song leaders for the New Year will be Maudie De Witt, Carolyn Porter, Susan Cooperrider and Susanne Hoxey.
