    3. Wednesday, May 02, 2007 “Looking Back” is a regular feature of the Modoc County record, published weekly in Alturas, California. The following is transcribed from the April 19, 2007 issue. Looking Back 99 Years Ago – 1908 THE MOST treacherous disease, pneumonia, has hit Modoc hard this year and that is why the coming of warm weather is most welcomed by all....The bachelors beat thre married men if[-n a baseball game here Sunday by a jolly score of 24 to 18….Mr. Fountain has sold his Likely saloon to Rasmus Gaustad….the opening Spring has caused forest supervisor Chris Rachford to announce that cattle may be turned out prior to the turnout date….The Modoc and Surprise Valley High Schools plan to charter a car on the NCO to go down to the bay area and see the fleet come in. This is quite an expense because it costs more to go from Alturas to Reno than it costs to go from Reno to London. No wonder we are all compelled to stay at home and die without ever having seen a railroad train. 93 Years Ago – 1914 THERE IS no relief in sight in the high price of meat. The Eastern market claims the public is so used to paying a high price for meat that the retailer is finding it constantly easier to dispose of his meat at whatever price he chooses. March prices for cattle have been 60 cents per hundred higher than in any other year of the record. Market volume is down, however, because of the big drought of 1913. Look for more Mexican cattle on the market in years ahead…. The vote to recall supervisor John Wall was more than 201 in favor of Mr. Wall staying in office….Recent Modoc registration figures show 898 Republicans, 804 Democrats, 22 Prohibitionists, 44 Progressives and 54 couldn’t make up their mind. 73 Years Ago – 1934 PERCY HARRIS is putting the finishing touches this week on his new lumberyard in Cedarville….The railroad track laid west of Canby that was intended to supply the Pickering Lumber Company in Alturas is now being torn up. The steel will be sold to Japan….Joseph Oard, a veteran of the Civil War and resident of fort Bidwell at the age of 94 was killed when the car he was driving went off the highway north of Cedarville. Captain Smith of the Highway Patrol attributed the mishap to excessive speed. 53 Years Ago – 1954 MOST RECENT registration figures show 4,507 registered in M odoc including 2,557 Democrats and 1,792 Republicans….Pine Creek reservoir has been banned from fishing until after the Kid’s Fish Derby is held there sometime in May….Hap York willk open the Niles Lounge in Alturas after a long closure….Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf will be the guest speaker at a University of California Alumni dinner in Alturas. 44 Years Ago – 1963 THE BOARD of Supervisors has named a 29 member lay committee of Modoc citizens who will dope out a plan for improving the local economy….The Modoc County Probation office and its procedures were reorganized this week with the appointment of John Hagerman as County Juvenile Officer and Bud Layton as Alturas Juvenile Officer. They will work with Uel Marr, County Probation Officer….Snow pile up to a depth of one foot in Alturas this week and temperatures went down to 123 above. Hope to see you all soon. Ron Morgan
