    3. Wednesday, July 25, 2007 “Looking Back” is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, published weekly in Alturas, California. The following is transcribed from the July 19, 2007 issue. Looking Back 99 Years Ago – 1908 DR. GIBSON has become the first man in Modoc to own two cars. One is a runabout and the other is a touring. Dr. Gibson said the touring car eats up more than twice the gasoline as the little one….The Alturas Stage between Alturas and Likely was held up Monday by two masked men. The driver, Omar Hammersley, was ordered at gunpoint to give the highwaymen the strongbox that is reported to have held $1500. Later reports, however, indicated the box was empty…..Alturas is filled with tough characters. They are camping up and down the river near town. We expect to hear many more stories of burglaries and robberies….A man was held up in alley in Alturas and relieved of $40 from his person by a “woman of the streets”. Deputy Elsea Smith apprehended her in Likely. 89 Years Ago – 1918 W.J. AND P.S. DORRIS will soon construct a huge reservoir about two miles east of Alturas on what is now known as Stockdill Slough. It will be about 12 1/2 miles around and when completed it will afford a new system for holding back flood waters from the Warner Mountains. It is situated along the Alturas to Cedarville road and in future years one can expect to see boats skimming the waters and fisherman dotting its banks making the trip to Cedarville that much more pleasurable ….The assessed valuation of Modoc County has been placed at $8,318,220 an increase of $337,275 over 1917assesssor F.A. Smith bites notes there are now 483 automobiles and 48,272 head of cattle in Modoc County….Many fires are raging on the Modoc Forest. Modoc boys can do little more than watch them, as they are all out of control 69 Years Ago – 1938 LYLLE COOK of THE Wool growers, reports that 1595 coyotes, 170 bobcats and 126 porcupines were killed by paid hunters in Modoc-Lassen this past year….There may not be much on the lumber market, but Edgerton mill in Adin is nonetheless employing 86 men and working two shifts….Shorty Bowers has promoted a baseball game between his team and the Colored Monarchs here Sunday….Sheriff John Sharp has filed his semi-annual report showing 276 arrests and bookings in the Modoc Jail. 44 Years Ago – 1963 A FIRE has completely destroyed the boiler room at the Loveness mill in Canby but no wide scale layoff is predicted….Roger Collis will head the Modoc Chamber….PP&L has made a growth potential survey for the city of Alturas….Cal-Ore All Stars from Alturas include Bobby Ray, Dan McKernan, Mark Capik, Stan Perkins, and Ken Fiord.. Alternates are Dean Blevins and Mike Turner. 38 Years Ago – 1969NHAIRCUTS have been raised from $2.00 to $2.25 in Alturas….Ed Kowalski has retired from CHP after 35 years of law enforcement work….Sgt. Rob Hetherwick was aboard the Nixon Express that the president ordered in his trimming down of troops in Vietnam….Alturas mail is now receiving house to house delivery….Dallas Dodge has secured lights for the Alturas tennis courts.
