    1. Honey Lake
    2. I was reading about Honey Lake and its history (by our Tim Purdy) and was wondering if anyone knows anything about the lake in 1906 when the San Francisco Earthquake hit. My husband said his dad (who was the CDF Ranger for Lassen and Modoc counties in the 50's) had told him that during the earthquake the lake completely drained. Does anyone know anything about this? 3. Saturday, October 29, 2005 Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, a weekly newspaper, published in Alturas, CA. The following is transcribed from the October 20, 2005 issue. Looking Back 96 Years Ago – 1908 ADIN MEANS businesswhen it comes to fire protection. In the past year they raised enough money to put a six-inch water line the length of the business section. Next they organized a fire department and formed a fire district. 87 Years Ago - 1918 FALL RAINS have brought smiles to the faces of local cattlemen and others throughout the state. Grass is greener now than it has been all summer…. Influenza, the dread disease, is killing more American soldiers than the Kaiser…. Daly Robinett’s resignation from the District Attorney’s office practically hands the November election to R.A. Laird, who is the only other candidate on the ballot. 70 Years Ago – 1935 DEPOSITORS IN the defunct Modoc County Bank will be paid dividends this month totaling $18,248. The bank went bankrupt here on September 2, 1932, a time that is becoming known as the “infamous great depression”….The last original settler of Dorris Bridge (now Alturas), Henry G. Payne, died at his home in Alturas. 42 Years Ago – 1963 Ground breaking ceremonies for the new Alturas Baptist Church on Fourth Street were delegated to Mr. R.C. Hicks, the oldest living member of the congregation….It’s been a hot fall in Modoc with the temperatures in the 80’s here today….The MUHS band has been invited to march at Kezar during the East-West game and, for the first time in more than 20 years, will have new band uniforms. I am a computer user with no concept whatsoever about how they work. I use a Dell Dimension 5100 with XP Pro. My printers have nearly always been HP’s. My 7100 all in one went on the blink near the first of the week. I tried for two days to deal with their outsourced assistance until I finally gave up. I purchased a new 7200 HP all in one. It was defective so I returned it and received another new one. This one works really well with my wife’s computer, but my computer refuses to load the software for me to operate the damned thing. Oh well, they don’t use dump rakes in haying any longer either. See you all again next week. Ron Morgan

    3. Sunday, October 23, 2005 Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, a weekly newspaper, published in Alturas, CA. The following is transcribed from the October 13, 2005 issue. Looking Back 86 Years Ago – 1919 AALTURAS WAS quite in the swing yesterday when it came to aeroplanes. Three machines were here during the day. First was the machine piloted by Lt. Goodwin which broke down Wednesday on his return trip necessitating his return to Alturas. Thursday morning a plane came up from Red Bluff looking for Goodwin. When the pilot could not find the engine trouble another plane came from Red Bluff in the afternoon to assist…. Enrollment in the Alturas elementary School jumped to a new total of 362. Thirty new desks which recently came in were set up, but were not sufficient and 40 more have been ordered…. Traffic officers of Modoc County will soon be chasing speeders in snow white motorcycles or automobiles. Traffic law violators are given a “sporting chance” under the new regulation. 66 Years Ago - 1939 A MAJOR from the War Department Remount Services will be here to inspect horses for purchase. Places for inspecting will be the D.S. Grove ranch, Eagleville; Harry Wilson stable, Cedarville; A. Hafer stable, Alturas; and F.H. Huffman ranch…. Sheldon Hardin, who graduated last year from Modoc High School, and is this year a student of Santa Clara University made the freshman team and played all four quarters in the Santa Clara freshmen-Bakersfield game last week. Another local boy making his notch in the football hall of fame is Wesley St. John. I was in the last Horse Cavalry Regiment remaining in the U.S.A. when I first entered the army. I always wondered how many horses were from Modoc County at that time. I know that Fred Huffman had a thoroughbred stallion, loaned by the army, to increase the quality of horsed available, from Modoc, for the army to purchase. Did you notice that Al Hafer’s place in 1939 was still booked as a stable? Sheldon Hardin had two younger brothers, Harold and rollin, who attended old MUHS with me. Today they have all expired. Sheldon was the oldest but the last to die. They died in inverse order of their ages. They were all excellent athletes. See you all again next week. Ron Morgan

    1. John Lanigar

    3. Lassen Weekly Mail, Susanville, California - 13 October 1909 Fatally Injured John Lanigar, while engaged in moving a threshing machine engine from Willow Creek to Horse Lake on Saturday afternoon last, met with an accident which resulted in his death on Sunday night. From what we can learn, he was driving a six horse team attached to heavy trucks upon which the engine rested. The road in that direction is rough and it is supposed that he was jolted off the engine upon which he was seated and thrown in front of one of the front wheels of the truck. The wheel did not pass over his body, but he was pushed in front of the wheel for some little distance, until the team stopped and Mr. Conklin who was driving a rig following the engine, and a short distance in the rear, arrived and extricated the injured man from his perilous position. Mr. Lanigar was taken to the home of J.T. Long at Horse Lake, and Dr. Dozier, of this place was summoned by telephone. The doctor left at once for Horse Lake and attended to the injured man. Aside from a broken rib, the doctor thought the injuries received by Mr. Lanigar, were not of a critical nature, except that internal injuries might have occurred which later might develop. The doctor returned home on Sunday and left the patient resting comfortably. At a late hour on Sunday night, however, a turn for the worse developed and the unfortunate man passed away. Mr. Lanigar was about 54 years of age, leaves a widow, three daughters, Mrs. Adams of Janesville, and Miss Eva Lanigar, and two sons. He was a brother of Freeman Lanigar of Clinton. Many friends will learn with deep regret of the deplorable affair. This is the second fatal accident that has occurred in this vicinity within ten days. The funeral occurred in Susanville this afternoon, the Rev. W.J. Carter, officiating. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved family in their time of sorrow.

She was of a cheerful disposition, loved by all who knew her and was never so happy as when she could so some kind deed. Her great aim in life was to make her husband happy, and to help him all she could. Not enough can be said in her praise. She came to Eagleville four weeks ago and has been ill at her brother's home in town. She was supposed to be getting better until Thanksgiving morning, she became suddenly worse, and passed peacefully away Friday, Nov. 25 at 1:30. 3. Thursday, October 13, 2005 Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, a weekly newspaper, published in Alturas, CA. The following is transcribed from the October 6, 2005 issue. Looking Back) 87 Years Ago – 1918 THE FOLLOWING eight young men will leave Alturas October 15 for Spokane, WA to enter the Government Technical School for Automobiles. These young men volunteered for the call issued last week by the War Department: Warren L,. Lytle, Alturas; Wm Cantrall, Likely; Harry A. Crowl, Alturas; Bob Shelton, Adin; Everett Royce, Cedarville; Albert J. Smith, Alturas; Edward A. Chambers, Alturas; George E. Kimball, Alturas….This afternoon as young Lindauer was starting out of town with a four mule team of supplies for his ranch, the reach of the wagon broke and the mules ran away, turning the wagon over and distributing the provisions on the street. Young Lindauer, fortunately, was not injured. 67 Years Ago - 1938 EDWARD CONWELL is following the footsteps of his late father, S.D. Conwell, for many years optometrist in Alturas, when he opened his business office for the practice of optometry in Bill Mayben’s Jewelry Shop on Main Street in Alturas this week. Edward graduated last May from the University of California School of Optometry and is a licensed optometrist….Plans of the Modoc Forest call for the planting of some 450,000 trees on about 800 acres of the Sugar Hill burn during the fall and spring planting seasons….Surprise Valley suffered a severe storm on Wednesday in comparison with the storm in Alturas. There were two traveling optometrists that came to Alturas during the late 1920’s and early 30’s. One was a Dr. Goble from Eureka, and Ed’s dad. Later the Conwell’s settled in Alturas. Ed was a top notch optometrist and a great asset as a citizen in Alturas. He was small, wiry, and always a busy man. He had a great sense of humor and was one of the best all around card player in town. Ron Morgan

    3. Thursday, October 13, 2005 Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, a weekly newspaper, published in Alturas, CA. The following is transcribed from the September 22, 2005 issue. Looking Back 87 Years Ago – 1918 THE CONTRACT for building the Big Valley Joint Union High School building has been given to W.L. Keene of Alturas for the sum of $13,900. Work will be commenced on the foundation by next Monday and the building will be completed about the firs of January. W.L. furnished the plans and specifications for the new building…. The home guard of Alturas has a $50 Liberty Bond which they will give to the person, club or lodge, organization or school, banks excepted, that sell the greatest amount of liberty bonds during the fourth liberty bond drive. There are no strings attached to this offer and the bond will be given as soon after the drive as the winner can be determined. 67 Years Ago - 1938 EBBE’S COLD Storage has about 23 deer in keeping, among them a 230 pound buck, perhaps the largest brought in, which was killed by Clarence Simpson of Eureka. Among the deer was a forked horn donated by the Forest Service to the county hospital. It had been killed by a lower country hunter by error. He dressed the animal, brought in and confessed his error, was fined but out on probation and the fine suspended. His spirit of sportsmanship was appreciated as most hunters under the such circumstances leave the meat to spoil in the woods….Robert Snider of New Pine Creek got a buck Friday morning with 10 points on one side and eight on the other, bagged on the Warner Range near New Pine Creek. I can remember when the week after the first day of Buck season the newspaper reported, with pictures, many of the local hunters who had good luck during that opening week. My mother was always teased because her tags were always validated, but she never left the house. My dad always thought that the more venison in the house the better See you all very shortly with another posting. Ron Morgan. The round house of the old NCO Railroad was built of stone (referring to the note in the 1908 section). When the building was abandoned in 1934, my Dad purchased it and had it demolished, saving all of the stone and the large timbers that were used in its construction. In 1936 he used those materials when our new house was built just below Tank Hill in Alturas. That house remains today, solid as can be and still pretty good looking. I spent 7 years in that home and enjoyed every minute of those years. I have no idea who owns that house today, but I hope their life is just as happy as mine was. Hope to see you all again next week. Ron Morgan

    3. You wont have any problem finding the cemetery. The Fulcher ranch was located near the county line, on the Lassen County side of Big Valley.
