Sat., Feb 9, 1985 John LaVine Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Stratford Evans Merced Chapel for John Samuel LaVine, 77, a Merced resident for 15 years who died Thursday at his home after a lengthy illness. Pastor John Berkner of Bible Baptist Church will conduct services for Mr. LaVine. Inurnment will follow. Born Dec 13, 1907 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. LaVine was a retired lighter-captain for the marine division of the New York Central Railroad, logging 40 years service. He and his wife Irene, were married 57 years. She was born March 1, 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Survivors include her daughters, Darlene York and Karen Richards of Merced and Denise Butler of Atwater; a son, William Eldridge Jr., of Merced; sisters, Irene Halbet of Las Vegas; one brother, John LaVine Jr., New Jersy; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home.
